+
+La fondazione del pubblico giardino de' semplici di Padova, dubbia
+molto e controversa nell'istorie di codesta Università, va fissata
+all'anno 1545. Esiste il decreto che la comanda in data dell'ultimo di
+giugno del suddetto anno[2].
+
+Subito dopo si trasferisce a Padova Sebastiano Foscarini, senatore e
+dottore e uno degli attuali riformatori, per riconoscere ed acquistare
+il terreno necessario e opportuno a tal uso. Conservasi l'istromento
+d'affittanza o livello per un tratto di terra di campi cinque e tre
+quarti meno venti tavole, stipulato tra il suddetto gentiluomo e li
+monaci di santa Giustina, con l'annua corrisponsione di ducati 25 da
+lire 6:4, li quali tuttora si pagano annualmente dalla _cassa studio_ al
+monastero.
+
+Fu questo il primo giardino botanico piantato in Europa. Il granduca di
+Toscana Cosimo I, li Bolognesi e gli Olandesi ne seguirono poco dopo
+l'esempio con la fondazione di quelli di Pisa e di Firenze, di Bologna e
+di Leiden.
+
+Il primo custode dell'orto fu Luigi Anguillara bolognese, di cui
+abbiamo un libretto non dispregevole in materia di piante. Fu condotto
+al pubblico servizio nel 1546.
+
+Nel 1551, non corrispondendo forse l'Anguillara all'aspettazione, fu
+dalli riformatori esortato e persuaso il patrizio Pierantonio Michiel,
+versatissimo nello studio delle piante, a volersi trasferire a Padova e
+assumere la direzione dell'orto, come fece, e sostenne per quattro anni
+tal carico, ne' quali moltissimo contribuì alla popolazione e fama
+dell'orto medesimo, trovato da esso in istato di somma povertà e
+desolazione, come afferma in una sua lettera all'Aldovrandi che trovasi
+tra' manoscritti di questo celebre autore, li quali si conservano nella
+libreria dell'Istituto di Bologna. Esiste presso lo scrittore di queste
+memorie un prezioso manoscritto del Michiel in cinque volumi in foglio,
+con bellissime figure miniate, degno, quanto il suo autore, d'essere
+fatto noto al mondo letterario[3].
+
+È di quei tempi, e forse lavoro di Daniele Barbaro promotore e gran
+fautore di codesta impresa, la seguente bellissima iscrizione, che
+contiene le leggi poste dal principe a questo suo prediletto
+stabilimento, collocata sopra il portone d'ingresso, dove tuttora si
+legge:
+

+Ben presto divenne il giardino di Padova famoso per tutta l'Europa, e
+merita esser qui riferito un passo di Pietro Bellonio illustre autor
+francese di que' tempi, tratto dal suo libretto che ha per titolo: _Les
+Remonstrances sur le default du labour et culture des plantes etc._,
+stampato in Parigi nel 1588. 8.° _Si la prudence d'une seigneurie de
+Venise eust faict fabriquer un theatre de Marbre bien enrichi d'or et
+d'argent, elle ne se fust acquis si grande recommandation d'honneur par
+luy, qu'elle a faict avec un de terre faict pour iardin, la ou ils ont
+eslevè et faict naistre maints arbres, et herbes, et telles choses
+rares au grand bien de leur republicque et ornament d'icelle, et proffit
+des estrangers qui viennent illec pour apprendre les disciplines en leur
+université de Padoüe etc._ (p. 70 t.). E poco dopo: _Voila donc comment
+les grands seigneurs, et republiques reçoivent souventesfois honneurs
+souverains des choses estimées petites, à l'exemple de ce theatre, qui
+leur a servi de trompette, pour augmenter leur renomée et reputation
+autant que chose qu'ils agent sceu inventer depuis cent ans, et qu'ils
+inventeront d'icy à tel temps_ (p. 71 t.).
+
+Ma in questo ritornato, dopo quattro anni di soggiorno fatto in Padova,
+il Michiel a Venezia, dove aveva e coltivava un giardino de' semplici
+proprio congiunto alla sua abitazione in contrada di san Trovaso, tutta
+la cura di questo di Padova rimase appoggiata al suddetto messer Luigui
+Anguillara fino all'anno 1561 in cui chiese ed ottenne il suo congedo.
+
+All'Anguillara fu sostituito Melchior Guilandino con ducale 20 settembre
+1561, e col semplice carico _di custodire e governare_ l'orto de'
+semplici; al quale poscia con altra ducale 1565 20 febbrajo _more
+veneto_, e con aumento di stipendio, fu aggiunto l'obbligo _di leggere,
+dichiarare, e mostrare alli scolari nel medesimo orto_; ond'ebbe il suo
+principio la cattedra di botanica, e fin d'allora fu accordato al
+professor d'essa luogo nel ruotolo tra gli altri professori, e in
+seguito fu sempre riguardata e premiata come una delle principali e più
+importanti. Ebbe il Guilandino più ricondotte, e finalmente con ducale
+24 maggio 1578 e con singolare esempio fu confermato nell'impiego a vita
+coll'onorario di secento fiorini all'anno, considerabilissimo in quei
+tempi; e lo godette fino all'anno di sua morte 1590. Era il Guilandino o
+Villandino, com'è chiamato nelle scritture di quei tempi, di Konisberga
+città della Prussia, e viaggiato aveva gran parte dell'Asia e del
+Levante sotto gli auspizj di Marino Cavalli bailo alla Porta, con cui
+fatto aveva il viaggio di Costantinopoli. Fu uomo di molta dottrina ed
+ingegno; disputatore acerrimo, ed emulo fierissimo del Matthioli. Lasciò
+alle stampe più libri di mole non grande, ma ripieni di sapere e di
+erudizione, che sono tuttora in pregio tra gl'intendenti e molto
+ricercati e rari a trovarsi. Conservasi la memoria del primo acquidotto
+fabbricato in codesti tempi per servizio del giardino nella seguente
+iscrizione:
+

+Al Guilandino successe Giovannantonio Cortuso gentiluomo padovano di
+nobilissima famiglia, condotto con ducale 10 novembre 1590, uomo molto
+versato nello studio e perito nella cognizione delle piante, e assai
+considerato dai botanici suoi contemporanei, co' quali manteneva
+corrispondenza di lettere e commercio di piante e di semi. Niente lasciò
+a stampa fuorchè un meschino catalogo dell'orto di Padova con
+l'iconografia d'esso, qual era allora, e qualche lettera latina che
+trovasi tra quelle del Matthioli, il quale battezzò col nome di
+_Cortusa_, che mantiensi tuttavia, una pianta da esso scoperta per
+onorare il suo amico. Morto il Cortuso, fu condotto in suo luogo
+nell'anno 1603
+
+Prospero Alpino di Marostica, il quale leggeva per lo innanzi
+nell'Università materia medica. Fu ad esso accordato il collegio e la
+prerogativa di lettore ordinario di primo luogo, e in pochi anni giunse
+con le sue fatiche a meritarsi molta celebrità in paese e fuori, e il
+riguardevole stipendio di 750 fiorini assegnatogli con ducale 29 marzo
+1613. Medico e naturalista riputatissimo visse fino all'anno 1615, e
+lasciò molte opere edite e inedite di medicina e di botanica
+stimatissime anche a' nostri giorni[4].
+
+Giovanni Prevozio svizzero del cantone di Basilea, che professava in
+Padova la medicina, fu promosso alla vacante lettura de' semplici e
+prefettura dell'orto mediante ducale de' 14 gennajo 1616 _more veneto_,
+e la sostenne fino all'anno della sua morte 1631. Fu perito medico e
+mediocre botanico. Abbiamo del suo un piccolo ricettario o farmacopea
+col titolo di _Medicina pauperum_, e un'altra operetta intitolata:
+_Hortulus medicus_, che sono tuttavia in qualche riputazione[5].
+
+Al Prevozio fu dato per successore con ducale 9 maggio 1633 Alpino
+Alpino figliuolo del soprallodato Prospero Alpino, di cui pubblicò
+qualche opera postuma; ma nulla di suo pubblicò con le stampe. Morì nel
+1637.
+
+Giovanni Veslingio di Minden nella Westfalia, cavaliere, succedette in
+suo luogo, eletto con ducale de' 13 marzo 1638 con generosissimo
+stipendio, e per lo spazio d'undici anni sostenne con molta lode e fama
+la lettura de' semplici congiuntamente all'anatomia, scienze in quei
+tempi assai limitate, e in ognuna d'esse compose e diede alla luce
+opere molto dotte e pregiate che lo hanno reso immortale. A di lui
+istanza e persuasione fu a pubbliche spese mandato in Candia da'
+riformatori, col favore principalmente di Pietro Foscarini uno d'essi,
+Ignazio des Champs fiammingo, giovane deditissimo alla botanica, perchè
+raccogliesse ivi, come fece, semi e piante da trasportare al pubblico
+giardino. Aveva il Veslingio medesimo viaggiato in Levante e in Egitto.
+Morì nel 1649, ed ebbe per successore nella lettura de' semplici
+
+Giorgio dalla Torre nobile padovano, il quale servì l'orto con molta
+cura e diligenza per buon numero d'anni, e pubblicò alcune opere
+botaniche nello stile di quei tempi e della seguente iscrizione, che si
+conserva murata all'interno del portone d'ingresso al giardino:
+

+Dopo trentadue anni di servizio fu il Torre dalla pubblica clemenza
+sollevato dell'obbligo delle lezioni, e sostituito a tal carico in sua
+vece con ducale 8 agosto 1681 Giacomo Pighi veronese, il quale leggeva
+allora la notomia: ma uscito il Pighi di vita un solo anno dopo,
+ripigliò il Torre le primiere sue funzioni, e continuò ad esercitarle
+fino all'anno 1687 in cui fu promosso alla lettura di medicina pratica
+in primo luogo.
+
+L'abate Felice Viali padovano, abbandonata Pisa dove aveva per molti
+anni sostenuta una riguardevole cattedra in quella Università, era stato
+dato per ajutante al Torre a istanza del medesimo dopo la morte del
+Pighi, e vacata la cattedra de' semplici, l'ottenne con ducale 3 aprile
+1687, ed occupolla fino all'anno 1718. In codesti tempi, e per
+suggerimento del medesimo Viali, furono ordinati e con la di lui
+assistenza e direzione eseguiti, molti nobili e dispendiosi lavori per
+ornamento e difesa dell'orto, de' quali conservasi la memoria nella
+seguente iscrizione collocata sopra il portone d'ingresso dalla parte
+interiore:

+Fu il Viali perito nell'arte, e molto benemerito del pubblico giardino;
+ma niente abbiamo di suo pubblicato con le stampe. Colpito nella vecchia
+sua età d'apoplessia, dopo trent'anni di servizio, fu dispensato con
+onorevole giubilazione dalla lettura, ed ebbe per successore,in
+concorrenza con Giovanni Scheuchzero, celebre botanico svizzero, e
+Lodovico da Riva veneziano, che fu poi professore di meteore in
+quest'Università, con ducale 16 marzo 1719,
+
+Giulio Pontedera d'origine pisano, ma nato in Lonigo terra del
+Vicentino, nome riputatissimo nella repubblica letteraria non solo per
+il suo sapere botanico, ma anche per la latina eloquenza che possedeva,
+e per la varia erudizione di cui fu fornito e diede illustri saggi nelle
+sue opere pubblicate e da pubblicarsi. Furono da esso per pubblico
+comando continuati i lavori lasciati imperfetti dall'antecessore, e
+molto accrebbesi per di lui cura di piante e di riputazione al pubblico
+giardino[7]. La seguente iscrizione murata al fianco interno del portone
+del giardino ci conserva la memoria d'alcuni ristauri e miglioramenti da
+esso al giardino procurati:

+Fino all'anno 1738 altro carico non aveva il professor botanico che
+quello della sopraintendenza al giardino, con la semplice ostensione
+delle piante ne' tempi prescritti. Ma venuti nel suddetto anno gli
+eccellentissimi riformatori in deliberazione di sopprimere con altre
+cattedre anche quella di materia medica sostenuta in quel tempo dal
+dottor Rossi, il quale fu onorevolmente giubilato, venne data al
+professor di botanica l'incombenza di spiegare nell'atto medesimo
+dell'ostensione delle piante anche le facoltà ed usi d'esse, cambiatosi
+perciò il titolo nel ruotolo da quello che prima v'era _Ad ostensionem
+Simplicium_, a quello che v'è presentemente _Ad lecturam et ostensionem
+Simplicium_; e nel medesimo tempo fu istituita altra cattedra che
+spiegasse il rimanente della materia medica, cioè la parte fossile ed
+animale, col titolo nel ruotolo _Ad lecturam et ostensionem caeterorum
+Simplicium_, al cui professore fu opportunamente appoggiata la
+sopraintendenza e custodia del pubblico museo di storia naturale; onde
+la cattedra stessa di materia medica non può dirsi propriamente
+soppressa, ma solamente e sapientemente divisa.
+
+Mancato di vita nel 1757 il Pontedera, mentre tra molti candidati
+disputavasi l'onorevole posto vacante, rimase la custodia del giardino
+appoggiata alla fede e perizia di Pietro Arduino, che godeva il posto
+di primo operajo del giardino medesimo, fino al gennajo del 1759 _more
+veneto_; quando tra li molti aspiranti fu dalla pubblica clemenza
+prescielto Giovanni Marsili veneziano, ritornato poc'anzi alla patria da
+un lungo viaggio da lui intrapreso ed eseguito a proprie spese per le
+principali città ed Accademie d'Europa, col fine d'istruirsi nella
+medicina e principalmente nella botanica, studio suo prediletto, e di
+contrarre amicizia e corrispondenza, che utilmente coltiva, co' più
+celebri professori d'essa. Trovato dal Marsili il pubblico giardino non
+meno scarso e povero di piante, che pregiudicato nella coltura e nel
+materiale, ebbe fino dal principio ad impiegare tutta la sua industria e
+capacità per ripopolarlo e per risarcire li danni e le ingiurie portate
+ad esso dal tempo. Alla quale sua buona volontà concorrendo la sovrana
+munificenza, molti lavori e ristauri sono stati comandati ed eseguiti
+sotto la di lui direzione, tra' quali merita particolar menzione
+l'innalzamento considerabile di tutta l'area interna ed esterna
+dell'orto e delle fabbriche aggiacenti, affine di preservarlo dalle
+frequenti e profonde inondazioni alle quali era esposto, e che, oltre al
+pregiudizio delle piante, lo rendevano più giorni in ogni anno affatto
+inaccessibile. La seguente iscrizione è fin d'allora apparecchiata per
+conservare, giusta l'antico costume, a' posteri la memoria d'un così
+essenziale provvedimento, e scolpirassi quando a' padroni piacerà di
+permetterlo:

+È l'area di questo giardino perfettamente circolare, di piedi 250 di
+diametro, chiusa di sodo muro, che termina ad alto con una bella cornice
+di marmo istriano, sormontata da un podio o ringhiera, che regna tutto
+all'intorno, di colonne e pilastri destinati a sostenere li busti de'
+più celebri professori, tra' quali si vede quello dell'illustre
+Pontedera collocatovi per decreto del magistrato nel 1760, interrotti da
+vasi di marmo con piante e fiori di metallo per maggior decoro e
+adornamento del giardino. Quattro maestosi portoni forniti di gran
+cancelli di ferro e bronzo, e fiancheggiati da robusti pilastroni di
+marmo rustici, a' quali servono d'acroterj otto smisurati vasi di marmo
+di leggiadra forma con piante e fiori di metallo, s'aprono ai quattro
+venti principali rimpetto uno all'altro, e corrispondenti alli due
+principali viali del giardino, di cui forma il centro una gran vasca di
+marmo circondata da sedili e selciato di marmo con un bel getto d'acqua
+nel mezzo. Dei quattro portoni quello al ponente serve d'ingresso; gli
+altri tre mettono in altrettanti ricinti di figura parimente circolare,
+chiusi di carpine e adorni di fontane e statue, con muricciuoli e basi
+all'intorno da collocarvi vasi con piante vive nella bella stagione.
+L'area tutta è principalmente divisa in otto spalti, che formano
+altrettanti separati _parterre_ alquanto più rilevati del piano de'
+viali, quattro perfettamente quadrati e quattro in semicerchio che segue
+l'andamento del muro maestro, tutti chiusi da cancelli di ferro con una
+bella fontana di marmo nel mezzo. Aggiugne vaghezza e nobiltà singolare
+e veramente principesca il ripiano d'essi otto spalti o giardinetti,
+disposto con elegante disegno in ajuole variamente divise e circondate
+di marmo, con muricciuoli all'intorno sopra cui posano li cancelli
+parimente di marmo; ciò che non minor soddisfazione reca agli occhi de'
+riguardanti che comodo e facilità per la distribuzione e buon governo
+delle piante e dell'orto tutto.
+
+Le spezie di piante che presentemente si allevano e custodiscono con
+tutta l'arte e diligenza in questo giardino oltrepassano di non poco le
+quattromila, gran parte delle quali sono delle più rare e più
+recentemente introdotte in Europa dall'altre parti del mondo, mentre non
+mancano, per quanto è possibile, le europee medicinali e curiose e non
+comuni. Queste quattromila e più spezie raddoppiate e moltiplicate per
+assicurarsi della loro conservazione, e per l'uso delle lezioni, non
+meno che per le gratuite somministrazioni che se ne fanno alli poveri,
+agli speziali e a chiunque ricorre, vengono a formare un numero di forse
+dodicimila o più piante, piantate per la maggior parte e disposte nella
+circonferenza del giardino, altre allevate in vasi in varj luoghi
+distribuiti, de' quali il numero supera li quattromila, altre, cioè
+quelle de' più caldi climi, coltivate dentro alle stufe secondo la varia
+e differente loro natura e bisogno.
+
+Mancava il pubblico giardino quasi affatto della più nobile e speziosa
+parte del regno vegetabile, cioè d'alberi non meno nostrani che
+forastieri. Pochissimi se ne vedevano, e delle spezie più volgari e
+comuni, dentro al ricinto del giardino cui servivano più d'ingombro che
+d'ornamento. Alla qual mancanza rimediar volendo l'attual professore,
+spontaneamente rinunziò al benefizio e godimento d'un tratto di terra
+lungo piedi 160, largo 130, annesso al giardino medesimo, e dalla
+pubblica liberalità concesso al privato uso de' suoi antecessori, dove
+di propria mano e in bell'ordine piantati, e già a considerabile altezza
+cresciuti, si contano 165 alberi di varia spezie, procurati dalli monti
+e dagli altri giardini d'Europa, tra' quali, oltre li più celebri ed
+incomuni de' monti, meritano distinta menzione il Platano e il Cipresso
+orientale, le due Tuje, le due Gleditsie, la Catalpa d'America, il
+Julibrissin de' Turchi, la Tacamahacca, il Loto di Virginia, la Firmiana
+della China, il Cedro del Libano, l'albero di Giuda americano, la
+Tulipifera, il Sughero, il Pistacchio, il Cerro dalla ghianda maggiore,
+l'albero della vernice vera del Giappone maschio e femmina, e lo spurio,
+il Moro papirifero del Giappone, il Moro rosso d'America, il Ginepro
+virginiano, il Lauroceraso di Portogallo, il Xantoxilo, la Pseudoacacia,
+l'Acero di Candia, il Carpino orientale, il Noce bianco d'America, la
+Ptelea, lo Stafilodendro di Virginia, il Leccio coccigero, Nespoli e
+Ciliegi varj d'America, con molti altri, la maggior parte de' quali non
+s'erano per l'addietro veduti in questo giardino, nè in altro d'Italia.
+
+Ma per ripigliare il filo della descrizione di questo rinomatissimo
+giardino, esso è vagamente e comodamente situato tra li due gran tempj
+di sant'Antonio e di santa Giustina, con le mura della città a poca
+distanza dietro, ed è sul dinanzi e per un buon tratto all'intorno
+bagnato e circondato da un fiumicello, sopra cui, per un ponte di pietra
+e un nobile portone di bella architettura rustica, s'entra nel vestibulo
+conpartito in viali d'altee, e lungo piedi circa 140, che introduce al
+giardino. Sulla mano manca del vestibulo lungo il fiumicello v'è
+l'abitazione del professore nuovamente rifabbricata per atto di
+spontanea beneficenza de' signori riformatori, a cui notizia era giunto
+lo stato rovinoso e veramente pericoloso di quella che fino dalla
+fondazione dell'orto servito aveva al medesimo uso. Non mancano in essa
+internamente luoghi e comodi opportuni agli usi e bisogni di chi è
+destinato ad abitarla, nè esternamente quella decenza che conviene alla
+maestà del luogo e alla grandezza del suo vero signore. Dall'altra parte
+del vestibulo, cioè alla dritta dell'ingresso, v'è altra casa di
+sufficiente capacità per alloggiare due degli operaj stipendiati
+dell'orto con le loro famiglie. Dal medesimo vestibulo, e fuori del
+corpo principale del giardino, per mezzo di cancelli di ferro, s'ha la
+veduta del _parterre_ de' vasi, che vi restano disposti con simmetria
+dalla primavera fino al tempo che d'uopo è il riporli a coperto. Al qual
+uso in un cortile contiguo vi sono quattro stanzoni, oltre tre gran
+conserve di legno mobili con vetriate, le quali si piantano nell'autunno
+e si levano nella primavera, due lungo i muri interni del giardino al
+mezzogiorno per tutto il tratto che corre tra un portone e l'altro, e la
+terza tra mezzodì e ponente nel _parterre_ dei vasi. Al muro de'
+sopraddetti stanzoni sono appoggiate quattro stufe per ricovero delle
+piante che abbisognano di clima artifiziale, di mediocre capacità e di
+modestissima struttura, che per verità non corrisponde alla grandezza e
+nobiltà delle altre parti del giardino; al quale quando sia, come
+sperasi, dalla pubblica munificenza aggiunto un corpo di fabbriche, qual
+vedesi negli altri giardini botanici e qual ricercasi a tal uso, non
+avrà certamente questo di Padova che invidiare a qualunque altro de' più
+ricchi e rinomati d'Europa[8].
+
+Fuori del giardino sulla pubblica strada e rimpetto al portone
+d'ingresso vi è, chiusa di tetto e muri, la macchina idraulica, la quale
+si sta appunto adesso rifacendo, mentre l'altra dopo di aver servito
+per lo spazio di quaranta e più anni ridotta era a grado di estrema
+decrepitezza e di totale sfacello. Da questa mediante una gran ruota
+s'innalza l'acqua del fiume vicino a considerabile altezza, e quindi per
+canali sotterranei di piombo vien condotta al giardino in quantità tale
+che basta ai getti di sedici fontane, distribuite opportunamente in varj
+luoghi nell'orto per l'uso insieme e per l'ornamento d'esso. Fu cura de'
+professori il conservare la memoria delle successive rinnovazioni della
+suddetta macchina con iscrizioni murate nell'edifizio che le rinserra, e
+sono le seguenti:

+[1] L'immortale Tiraboschi narra nella sua Storia della Lett. ital.
+(Vol. VII. P. II. pag. 878. Milano 1822-1826) che _il suddetto celebre
+professore_ (Marsili) _ha compilata una esattissima storia dell'origine
+e de' progressi del detto orto_ (di Padova), _la qual sarebbe a bramare
+che uscisse in luce_. Vi è ragione di credere che egli favelli della
+operetta che ora si pubblica, e perchè non mancano ad essa i pregi da
+lui segnati nel citato passo, e perchè nella raccolta dei mss. tutti del
+Marsili, guardati nella biblioteca dell'orto nostro, non havvi altra
+memoria che meriti il nome di storia. Che queste notizie fossero poi
+estese verso il 1771 non vi ha dubbio, poichè il Marsili accenna di
+scriverle mentre si stava rifacendo la macchina idraulica dell'orto, che
+appunto in quell'anno fu ricostrutta.
+
+[2] Il decreto di fondazione fu pubblicato coll'istromento di
+affittanza, di cui sarà fatto cenno fra poco, nella _Memoria
+dell'origine ed anzianità dell'Orto botanico di Padova di Roberto de
+Visiani professore di botanica e prefetto dell'Orto medesimo_
+(Venezia--Merlo--1839), che rivendica al padovano il titolo di
+anteriorità _su tutti gli orti botanici che alla pubblica istruzione
+sieno stati aperti giammai_ (pag. 5).
+
+[3] Questo ms. passò dal Marsili al suo successore cav. Giuseppe A.
+Bonato, che lo donò alla libreria di S. Marco in Venezia, ove tuttora si
+custodisce.
+
+[4] Un grosso codice autografo dell'Alpino conservasi, con altri del
+Gabrieli, del Cesi, del Malpighi, nella biblioteca dell'orto, la quale
+conta più di 5000 volumi per la maggior parte di scienza botanica.
+
+[5] Dopo il Prevozio fu condotto Giovanni Rodio danese alla cattedra de'
+semplici in Bo, ed alla cattedra dell'ostensione nell'orto con ducale 17
+gennajo 1631 M.V., di cui esiste una copia nel volume 21 R. M.
+nell'archivio antico dello Studio di Padova. Non si trova però che abbia
+mai letto; e per questo forse il N. A. non ne avrà fatto menzione nelle
+presenti notizie.

+[6] Tanto questa iscrizione che la precedente furono di fresco
+trasportate nell'atrio dell'abitazione del professore, e sottratte così
+ai guasti progressivi del tempo e delle stagioni.
+
+[7] Al Pontedera era imposto di scrivere la storia dell'orto non senza
+apposita ricompensa. Il poco che ne scrisse in lingua latina esiste, con
+sette volumi di annotazioni e documenti da lui raccolti per servire alla
+stessa, nella biblioteca dell'orto. Il chiarissimo professore de
+Visiani, da cui si ebbero le notizie in queste note comprese, promise
+solennemente nella lodata sua _Memoria dell'origine_ ec. una storia di
+questo celebratissimo stabilimento. Egli che con ogni sua possa nei
+pochi anni che lo governa ne accrebbe lo splendore fino ad un segno cui
+mai non giunse per lo passato, non tarderà, si spera, a trarla a buon
+fine.
+
+[8] Un ampio edifizio distinto in sette serre a varia temperatura,
+compiuto nell'anno 1810, s'alza oggidì fuori del ricinto circolare del
+giardino non molto lungi dalla casa del professore. L'orto di Padova non
+ha quindi, nemmeno per questa parte, _che invidiare a qualunque altro
+dei più ricchi e celebrati d'Europa_.

+<p>La fondazione del pubblico giardino de' semplici<!-- Page 7 --><a name='Page_7'><span class="pagenum">[Pag.&nbsp;7]</span></a>
+di Padova, dubbia molto e controversa nell'istorie
+di codesta Università, va fissata all'anno
+1545. Esiste il decreto che la comanda in
+data dell'ultimo di giugno del suddetto anno<a name='FNanchor_2_2'></a><a href='#Footnote_2_2'><sup>[2]</sup></a>.</p>
+
+<p>Subito dopo si trasferisce a Padova Sebastiano
+Foscarini, senatore e dottore e uno degli attuali
+riformatori, per riconoscere ed acquistare
+il terreno necessario e opportuno a tal uso. Conservasi
+l'istromento d'affittanza o livello per un
+tratto di terra di campi cinque e tre quarti meno
+venti tavole, stipulato tra il suddetto gentiluomo
+e li monaci di santa Giustina, con l'annua
+corrisponsione di ducati 25 da lire 6:4, li quali
+tuttora si pagano annualmente dalla <i>cassa studio</i>
+al monastero.</p>
+
+<p>Fu questo il primo giardino botanico piantato
+in Europa. Il granduca di Toscana Cosimo I,
+li Bolognesi e gli Olandesi ne seguirono poco
+dopo l'esempio con la fondazione di quelli di
+Pisa e di Firenze, di Bologna e di Leiden.</p>
+

+<p>Il primo custode dell'orto fu Luigi Anguillara
+bolognese, di cui abbiamo un libretto non
+dispregevole in materia di piante. Fu condotto
+al pubblico servizio nel 1546.</p>
+
+<p>Nel 1551, non corrispondendo forse l'Anguillara
+all'aspettazione, fu dalli riformatori esortato
+e persuaso il patrizio Pierantonio Michiel,
+versatissimo nello studio delle piante, a volersi
+trasferire a Padova e assumere la direzione dell'orto,
+come fece, e sostenne per quattro anni
+tal carico, ne' quali moltissimo contribuì alla popolazione
+e fama dell'orto medesimo, trovato da
+esso in istato di somma povertà e desolazione,
+come afferma in una sua lettera all'Aldovrandi
+che trovasi tra' manoscritti di questo celebre autore,
+li quali si conservano nella libreria dell'Istituto
+di Bologna. Esiste presso lo scrittore di
+queste memorie un prezioso manoscritto del Michiel
+in cinque volumi in foglio, con bellissime
+figure miniate, degno, quanto il suo autore, d'essere
+fatto noto al mondo letterario<a name='FNanchor_3_3'></a><a href='#Footnote_3_3'><sup>[3]</sup></a>.</p>
+
+<p>È di quei tempi, e forse lavoro di Daniele
+Barbaro promotore e gran fautore di codesta
+impresa, la seguente bellissima iscrizione, che
+contiene le leggi poste dal principe a questo suo
+prediletto stabilimento, collocata sopra il portone
+d'ingresso, dove tuttora si legge:</p>

+<p>Ben presto divenne il giardino di Padova famoso
+per tutta l'Europa, e merita esser qui riferito
+un passo di Pietro Bellonio illustre autor
+francese di que' tempi, tratto dal suo libretto
+che ha per titolo: <i>Les Remonstrances sur le
+default du labour et culture des plantes etc.</i>,
+stampato in Parigi nel 1588. 8.° <i>Si la prudence
+d'une seigneurie de Venise eust faict fabriquer
+un theatre de Marbre bien enrichi
+d'or et d'argent, elle ne se fust acquis si
+grande recommandation d'honneur par luy,
+qu'elle a faict avec un de terre faict pour
+iardin, la ou ils ont eslevè et faict naistre

+au grand bien de leur republicque et ornament
+d'icelle, et proffit des estrangers qui
+viennent illec pour apprendre les disciplines
+en leur université de Padoüe etc.</i> (p. 70 t.). E
+poco dopo: <i>Voila donc comment les grands seigneurs,
+et republiques reçoivent souventesfois
+honneurs souverains des choses estimées
+petites, à l'exemple de ce theatre, qui leur
+a servi de trompette, pour augmenter leur renomée
+et reputation autant que chose qu'ils
+agent sceu inventer depuis cent ans, et qu'ils
+inventeront d'icy à tel temps</i> (p. 71 t.).</p>
+
+<p>Ma in questo ritornato, dopo quattro anni di
+soggiorno fatto in Padova, il Michiel a Venezia,
+dove aveva e coltivava un giardino de' semplici
+proprio congiunto alla sua abitazione in contrada
+di san Trovaso, tutta la cura di questo di Padova
+rimase appoggiata al suddetto messer Luigui
+Anguillara fino all'anno 1561 in cui chiese
+ed ottenne il suo congedo.</p>
+
+<p>All'Anguillara fu sostituito Melchior Guilandino
+con ducale 20 settembre 1561, e col semplice
+carico <i>di custodire e governare</i> l'orto de'
+semplici; al quale poscia con altra ducale 1565
+20 febbrajo <i>more veneto</i>, e con aumento di stipendio,
+fu aggiunto l'obbligo <i>di leggere, dichiarare,
+e mostrare alli scolari nel medesimo
+<!-- Page 11 --><a name='Page_11'><span class="pagenum">[Pag.&nbsp;11]</span></a>orto</i>; ond'ebbe il suo principio la cattedra di
+botanica, e fin d'allora fu accordato al professor
+d'essa luogo nel ruotolo tra gli altri professori,
+e in seguito fu sempre riguardata e premiata come
+una delle principali e più importanti. Ebbe
+il Guilandino più ricondotte, e finalmente con
+ducale 24 maggio 1578 e con singolare esempio
+fu confermato nell'impiego a vita coll'onorario
+di secento fiorini all'anno, considerabilissimo in
+quei tempi; e lo godette fino all'anno di sua
+morte 1590. Era il Guilandino o Villandino,
+com'è chiamato nelle scritture di quei tempi, di
+Konisberga città della Prussia, e viaggiato aveva
+gran parte dell'Asia e del Levante sotto gli auspizj
+di Marino Cavalli bailo alla Porta, con cui
+fatto aveva il viaggio di Costantinopoli. Fu uomo
+di molta dottrina ed ingegno; disputatore
+acerrimo, ed emulo fierissimo del Matthioli. Lasciò
+alle stampe più libri di mole non grande,
+ma ripieni di sapere e di erudizione, che sono
+tuttora in pregio tra gl'intendenti e molto ricercati
+e rari a trovarsi. Conservasi la memoria del
+primo acquidotto fabbricato in codesti tempi per
+servizio del giardino nella seguente iscrizione:</p>

+<p>Al Guilandino successe Giovannantonio Cortuso
+gentiluomo padovano di nobilissima famiglia,
+condotto con ducale 10 novembre 1590,
+uomo molto versato nello studio e perito nella
+cognizione delle piante, e assai considerato dai
+botanici suoi contemporanei, co' quali manteneva
+corrispondenza di lettere e commercio di
+piante e di semi. Niente lasciò a stampa fuorchè
+un meschino catalogo dell'orto di Padova
+con l'iconografia d'esso, qual era allora, e qualche
+lettera latina che trovasi tra quelle del Matthioli,
+il quale battezzò col nome di <i>Cortusa</i>,
+che mantiensi tuttavia, una pianta da esso scoperta
+per onorare il suo amico. Morto il Cortuso,
+fu condotto in suo luogo nell'anno 1603</p>
+
+<p>Prospero Alpino di Marostica, il quale leggeva
+per lo innanzi nell'Università materia medica.
+Fu ad esso accordato il collegio e la prerogativa
+di lettore ordinario di primo luogo, e in
+pochi anni giunse con le sue fatiche a meritarsi
+<!-- Page 13 --><a name='Page_13'><span class="pagenum">[Pag.&nbsp;13]</span></a>molta celebrità in paese e fuori, e il riguardevole
+stipendio di 750 fiorini assegnatogli con ducale
+29 marzo 1613. Medico e naturalista riputatissimo
+visse fino all'anno 1615, e lasciò molte
+opere edite e inedite di medicina e di botanica
+stimatissime anche a' nostri giorni<a name='FNanchor_4_4'></a><a href='#Footnote_4_4'><sup>[4]</sup></a>.</p>
+
+<p>Giovanni Prevozio svizzero del cantone di Basilea,
+che professava in Padova la medicina, fu
+promosso alla vacante lettura de' semplici e prefettura
+dell'orto mediante ducale de' 14 gennajo
+1616 <i>more veneto</i>, e la sostenne fino all'anno
+della sua morte 1631. Fu perito medico e mediocre
+botanico. Abbiamo del suo un piccolo ricettario
+o farmacopea col titolo di <i>Medicina
+pauperum</i>, e un'altra operetta intitolata: <i>Hortulus
+medicus</i>, che sono tuttavia in qualche riputazione<a name='FNanchor_5_5'></a><a href='#Footnote_5_5'><sup>[5]</sup></a>.</p>
+
+<p>Al Prevozio fu dato per successore con ducale
+9 maggio 1633 Alpino Alpino figliuolo del soprallodato
+Prospero Alpino, di cui pubblicò
+qualche opera postuma; ma nulla di suo pubblicò
+con le stampe. Morì nel 1637.</p>
+
+<p>Giovanni Veslingio di Minden nella Westfalia,
+cavaliere, succedette in suo luogo, eletto con
+ducale de' 13 marzo 1638 con generosissimo stipendio,
+e per lo spazio d'undici anni sostenne
+con molta lode e fama la lettura de' semplici
+congiuntamente all'anatomia, scienze in quei
+<!-- Page 14 --><a name='Page_14'><span class="pagenum">[Pag.&nbsp;14]</span></a>tempi assai limitate, e in ognuna d'esse compose
+e diede alla luce opere molto dotte e pregiate
+che lo hanno reso immortale. A di lui istanza e
+persuasione fu a pubbliche spese mandato in
+Candia da' riformatori, col favore principalmente
+di Pietro Foscarini uno d'essi, Ignazio des
+Champs fiammingo, giovane deditissimo alla botanica,
+perchè raccogliesse ivi, come fece, semi
+e piante da trasportare al pubblico giardino.
+Aveva il Veslingio medesimo viaggiato in Levante
+e in Egitto. Morì nel 1649, ed ebbe per
+successore nella lettura de' semplici</p>
+
+<p>Giorgio dalla Torre nobile padovano, il quale
+servì l'orto con molta cura e diligenza per buon
+numero d'anni, e pubblicò alcune opere botaniche
+nello stile di quei tempi e della seguente
+iscrizione, che si conserva murata all'interno del
+portone d'ingresso al giardino:</p>

+<p>Dopo trentadue anni di servizio fu il Torre
+dalla pubblica clemenza sollevato dell'obbligo
+delle lezioni, e sostituito a tal carico in sua vece
+con ducale 8 agosto 1681 Giacomo Pighi veronese,
+il quale leggeva allora la notomia: ma
+uscito il Pighi di vita un solo anno dopo, ripigliò
+il Torre le primiere sue funzioni, e continuò ad
+esercitarle fino all'anno 1687 in cui fu promosso
+alla lettura di medicina pratica in primo luogo.</p>
+
+<p>L'abate Felice Viali padovano, abbandonata
+Pisa dove aveva per molti anni sostenuta una riguardevole
+cattedra in quella Università, era stato
+dato per ajutante al Torre a istanza del medesimo
+dopo la morte del Pighi, e vacata la cattedra
+de' semplici, l'ottenne con ducale 3 aprile

+<p>Fu il Viali perito nell'arte, e molto benemerito
+del pubblico giardino; ma niente abbiamo
+di suo pubblicato con le stampe. Colpito nella
+vecchia sua età d'apoplessia, dopo trent'anni di
+servizio, fu dispensato con onorevole giubilazione
+dalla lettura, ed ebbe per successore,in concor<!-- Page 17 --><a name='Page_17'><span class="pagenum">[Pag.&nbsp;17]</span></a>renza
+con Giovanni Scheuchzero, celebre botanico
+svizzero, e Lodovico da Riva veneziano, che
+fu poi professore di meteore in quest'Università,
+con ducale 16 marzo 1719,</p>
+
+<p>Giulio Pontedera d'origine pisano, ma nato
+in Lonigo terra del Vicentino, nome riputatissimo
+nella repubblica letteraria non solo per il
+suo sapere botanico, ma anche per la latina eloquenza
+che possedeva, e per la varia erudizione
+di cui fu fornito e diede illustri saggi nelle sue
+opere pubblicate e da pubblicarsi. Furono da
+esso per pubblico comando continuati i lavori
+lasciati imperfetti dall'antecessore, e molto accrebbesi
+per di lui cura di piante e di riputazione
+al pubblico giardino<a name='FNanchor_7_7'></a><a href='#Footnote_7_7'><sup>[7]</sup></a>. La seguente iscrizione
+murata al fianco interno del portone del
+giardino ci conserva la memoria d'alcuni ristauri
+e miglioramenti da esso al giardino procurati:</p>

+professor botanico che quello della sopraintendenza
+al giardino, con la semplice ostensione
+delle piante ne' tempi prescritti. Ma venuti nel
+suddetto anno gli eccellentissimi riformatori in
+deliberazione di sopprimere con altre cattedre
+anche quella di materia medica sostenuta in quel
+tempo dal dottor Rossi, il quale fu onorevolmente
+giubilato, venne data al professor di botanica
+l'incombenza di spiegare nell'atto medesimo
+dell'ostensione delle piante anche le facoltà
+ed usi d'esse, cambiatosi perciò il titolo nel
+ruotolo da quello che prima v'era <i>Ad ostensionem
+Simplicium</i>, a quello che v'è presentemente
+<i>Ad lecturam et ostensionem Simplicium</i>; e
+nel medesimo tempo fu istituita altra cattedra
+che spiegasse il rimanente della materia medica,
+cioè la parte fossile ed animale, col titolo nel
+ruotolo <i>Ad lecturam et ostensionem caeterorum
+Simplicium</i>, al cui professore fu opportunamente
+appoggiata la sopraintendenza e custodia
+del pubblico museo di storia naturale; onde
+la cattedra stessa di materia medica non può dirsi
+propriamente soppressa, ma solamente e sapientemente
+divisa.</p>
+
+<p>Mancato di vita nel 1757 il Pontedera, mentre
+tra molti candidati disputavasi l'onorevole
+posto vacante, rimase la custodia del giardino
+<!-- Page 19 --><a name='Page_19'><span class="pagenum">[Pag.&nbsp;19]</span></a>appoggiata alla fede e perizia di Pietro Arduino,
+che godeva il posto di primo operajo del
+giardino medesimo, fino al gennajo del 1759
+<i>more veneto</i>; quando tra li molti aspiranti fu
+dalla pubblica clemenza prescielto Giovanni
+Marsili veneziano, ritornato poc'anzi alla patria
+da un lungo viaggio da lui intrapreso ed
+eseguito a proprie spese per le principali città
+ed Accademie d'Europa, col fine d'istruirsi nella
+medicina e principalmente nella botanica, studio
+suo prediletto, e di contrarre amicizia e corrispondenza,
+che utilmente coltiva, co' più celebri
+professori d'essa. Trovato dal Marsili il pubblico
+giardino non meno scarso e povero di
+piante, che pregiudicato nella coltura e nel materiale,
+ebbe fino dal principio ad impiegare tutta
+la sua industria e capacità per ripopolarlo e
+per risarcire li danni e le ingiurie portate ad
+esso dal tempo. Alla quale sua buona volontà
+concorrendo la sovrana munificenza, molti lavori
+e ristauri sono stati comandati ed eseguiti
+sotto la di lui direzione, tra' quali merita particolar
+menzione l'innalzamento considerabile di
+tutta l'area interna ed esterna dell'orto e delle
+fabbriche aggiacenti, affine di preservarlo dalle
+frequenti e profonde inondazioni alle quali era
+esposto, e che, oltre al pregiudizio delle piante,
+lo rendevano più giorni in ogni anno affatto in<!-- Page 20 --><a name='Page_20'><span class="pagenum">[Pag.&nbsp;20]</span></a>accessibile.

+<p>È l'area di questo giardino perfettamente circolare,
+di piedi 250 di diametro, chiusa di sodo
+muro, che termina ad alto con una bella cornice
+di marmo istriano, sormontata da un podio
+o ringhiera, che regna tutto all'intorno, di colonne
+e pilastri destinati a sostenere li busti de'
+più celebri professori, tra' quali si vede quello
+dell'illustre Pontedera collocatovi per decreto
+del magistrato nel 1760, interrotti da vasi di
+<!-- Page 21 --><a name='Page_21'><span class="pagenum">[Pag.&nbsp;21]</span></a>marmo con piante e fiori di metallo per maggior
+decoro e adornamento del giardino. Quattro
+maestosi portoni forniti di gran cancelli di
+ferro e bronzo, e fiancheggiati da robusti pilastroni
+di marmo rustici, a' quali servono d'acroterj
+otto smisurati vasi di marmo di leggiadra
+forma con piante e fiori di metallo, s'aprono ai
+quattro venti principali rimpetto uno all'altro,
+e corrispondenti alli due principali viali del giardino,
+di cui forma il centro una gran vasca di
+marmo circondata da sedili e selciato di marmo
+con un bel getto d'acqua nel mezzo. Dei quattro
+portoni quello al ponente serve d'ingresso;
+gli altri tre mettono in altrettanti ricinti di figura
+parimente circolare, chiusi di carpine e
+adorni di fontane e statue, con muricciuoli e
+basi all'intorno da collocarvi vasi con piante vive
+nella bella stagione. L'area tutta è principalmente
+divisa in otto spalti, che formano altrettanti
+separati <i>parterre</i> alquanto più rilevati del
+piano de' viali, quattro perfettamente quadrati e
+quattro in semicerchio che segue l'andamento
+del muro maestro, tutti chiusi da cancelli di ferro
+con una bella fontana di marmo nel mezzo.
+Aggiugne vaghezza e nobiltà singolare e veramente
+principesca il ripiano d'essi otto spalti o
+giardinetti, disposto con elegante disegno in
+ajuole variamente divise e circondate di marmo,
+<!-- Page 22 --><a name='Page_22'><span class="pagenum">[Pag.&nbsp;22]</span></a>con muricciuoli all'intorno sopra cui posano li
+cancelli parimente di marmo; ciò che non minor
+soddisfazione reca agli occhi de' riguardanti
+che comodo e facilità per la distribuzione e buon
+governo delle piante e dell'orto tutto.</p>
+
+<p>Le spezie di piante che presentemente si allevano
+e custodiscono con tutta l'arte e diligenza
+in questo giardino oltrepassano di non poco
+le quattromila, gran parte delle quali sono delle
+più rare e più recentemente introdotte in Europa
+dall'altre parti del mondo, mentre non mancano,
+per quanto è possibile, le europee medicinali
+e curiose e non comuni. Queste quattromila
+e più spezie raddoppiate e moltiplicate per
+assicurarsi della loro conservazione, e per l'uso
+delle lezioni, non meno che per le gratuite somministrazioni
+che se ne fanno alli poveri, agli
+speziali e a chiunque ricorre, vengono a formare
+un numero di forse dodicimila o più piante,
+piantate per la maggior parte e disposte nella
+circonferenza del giardino, altre allevate in vasi
+in varj luoghi distribuiti, de' quali il numero supera
+li quattromila, altre, cioè quelle de' più caldi
+climi, coltivate dentro alle stufe secondo la
+varia e differente loro natura e bisogno.</p>
+
+<p>Mancava il pubblico giardino quasi affatto della
+più nobile e speziosa parte del regno vegetabile,
+cioè d'alberi non meno nostrani che fora<!-- Page 23 --><a name='Page_23'><span class="pagenum">[Pag.&nbsp;23]</span></a>stieri.
+Pochissimi se ne vedevano, e delle spezie
+più volgari e comuni, dentro al ricinto del giardino
+cui servivano più d'ingombro che d'ornamento.
+Alla qual mancanza rimediar volendo
+l'attual professore, spontaneamente rinunziò al
+benefizio e godimento d'un tratto di terra lungo
+piedi 160, largo 130, annesso al giardino medesimo,
+e dalla pubblica liberalità concesso al
+privato uso de' suoi antecessori, dove di propria
+mano e in bell'ordine piantati, e già a considerabile
+altezza cresciuti, si contano 165 alberi di
+varia spezie, procurati dalli monti e dagli altri
+giardini d'Europa, tra' quali, oltre li più celebri
+ed incomuni de' monti, meritano distinta menzione
+il Platano e il Cipresso orientale, le due
+Tuje, le due Gleditsie, la Catalpa d'America,
+il Julibrissin de' Turchi, la Tacamahacca, il Loto
+di Virginia, la Firmiana della China, il Cedro
+del Libano, l'albero di Giuda americano, la
+Tulipifera, il Sughero, il Pistacchio, il Cerro
+dalla ghianda maggiore, l'albero della vernice
+vera del Giappone maschio e femmina, e lo spurio,
+il Moro papirifero del Giappone, il Moro
+rosso d'America, il Ginepro virginiano, il Lauroceraso
+di Portogallo, il Xantoxilo, la Pseudoacacia,
+l'Acero di Candia, il Carpino orientale,
+il Noce bianco d'America, la Ptelea, lo Stafilodendro
+di Virginia, il Leccio coccigero, Nespoli
+<!-- Page 24 --><a name='Page_24'><span class="pagenum">[Pag.&nbsp;24]</span></a>e Ciliegi varj d'America, con molti altri, la maggior
+parte de' quali non s'erano per l'addietro
+veduti in questo giardino, nè in altro d'Italia.</p>
+
+<p>Ma per ripigliare il filo della descrizione di
+questo rinomatissimo giardino, esso è vagamente
+e comodamente situato tra li due gran tempj
+di sant'Antonio e di santa Giustina, con le mura
+della città a poca distanza dietro, ed è sul
+dinanzi e per un buon tratto all'intorno bagnato
+e circondato da un fiumicello, sopra cui, per
+un ponte di pietra e un nobile portone di bella
+architettura rustica, s'entra nel vestibulo conpartito
+in viali d'altee, e lungo piedi circa 140,
+che introduce al giardino. Sulla mano manca
+del vestibulo lungo il fiumicello v'è l'abitazione
+del professore nuovamente rifabbricata per atto
+di spontanea beneficenza de' signori riformatori,
+a cui notizia era giunto lo stato rovinoso e veramente
+pericoloso di quella che fino dalla fondazione
+dell'orto servito aveva al medesimo uso.
+Non mancano in essa internamente luoghi e comodi
+opportuni agli usi e bisogni di chi è destinato
+ad abitarla, nè esternamente quella decenza
+che conviene alla maestà del luogo e alla
+grandezza del suo vero signore. Dall'altra parte
+del vestibulo, cioè alla dritta dell'ingresso, v'è
+altra casa di sufficiente capacità per alloggiare
+due degli operaj stipendiati dell'orto con le loro
+<!-- Page 25 --><a name='Page_25'><span class="pagenum">[Pag.&nbsp;25]</span></a>famiglie. Dal medesimo vestibulo, e fuori del
+corpo principale del giardino, per mezzo di
+cancelli di ferro, s'ha la veduta del <i>parterre</i> de'
+vasi, che vi restano disposti con simmetria dalla
+primavera fino al tempo che d'uopo è il riporli
+a coperto. Al qual uso in un cortile contiguo vi
+sono quattro stanzoni, oltre tre gran conserve
+di legno mobili con vetriate, le quali si piantano
+nell'autunno e si levano nella primavera, due
+lungo i muri interni del giardino al mezzogiorno
+per tutto il tratto che corre tra un portone e
+l'altro, e la terza tra mezzodì e ponente nel <i>parterre</i>
+dei vasi. Al muro de' sopraddetti stanzoni
+sono appoggiate quattro stufe per ricovero delle
+piante che abbisognano di clima artifiziale, di mediocre
+capacità e di modestissima struttura, che
+per verità non corrisponde alla grandezza e nobiltà
+delle altre parti del giardino; al quale quando
+sia, come sperasi, dalla pubblica munificenza
+aggiunto un corpo di fabbriche, qual vedesi negli
+altri giardini botanici e qual ricercasi a tal uso,
+non avrà certamente questo di Padova che invidiare
+a qualunque altro de' più ricchi e rinomati
+d'Europa<a name='FNanchor_8_8'></a><a href='#Footnote_8_8'><sup>[8]</sup></a>.</p>
+
+<p>Fuori del giardino sulla pubblica strada e rimpetto
+al portone d'ingresso vi è, chiusa di tetto
+e muri, la macchina idraulica, la quale si sta appunto
+adesso rifacendo, mentre l'altra dopo di
+<!-- Page 26 --><a name='Page_26'><span class="pagenum">[Pag.&nbsp;26]</span></a>aver servito per lo spazio di quaranta e più anni
+ridotta era a grado di estrema decrepitezza e di
+totale sfacello. Da questa mediante una gran
+ruota s'innalza l'acqua del fiume vicino a considerabile
+altezza, e quindi per canali sotterranei
+di piombo vien condotta al giardino in quantità
+tale che basta ai getti di sedici fontane, distribuite
+opportunamente in varj luoghi nell'orto
+per l'uso insieme e per l'ornamento d'esso.
+Fu cura de' professori il conservare la memoria
+delle successive rinnovazioni della suddetta macchina
+con iscrizioni murate nell'edifizio che le
