+INTRODUCTION TO SECOND EDITION.
+
+
+_The first edition of No. 2 of our Crochet Series was necessarily
+hurried, and issued out of its regular order, in compliance with a
+very general demand for lambrequin designs. While its success has been
+gratifying, there were some defects in the work, which has decided
+us to re-issue it under its present form. It has been carefully
+re-written, so as to follow the very full instructions found in No. 1.
+The number of designs have been doubled by the addition of some very
+attractive patterns for lambrequins._
+
+_Three numbers of the Series have been issued, as follows_:

+TWINE CROCHET WORK.
+
+
+The use of twine in fancy work has introduced a material that can be
+employed extensively in household decoration, and has brought the
+crochet needle into greater requisition than ever before. Many of those
+articles that contribute so much to the attractiveness of a home can be
+made of twine at comparatively little cost. It can be made in colors
+and of different sizes, and on account of its durability, cheapness and
+beauty, is considered by many superior to macramé work. By a judicious
+selection of shades, and a tasteful combination of trimmings, a large
+assortment of which are sold for that purpose, consisting of silk and
+plush balls of various shapes and colors, ribbon, etc., a great variety
+of articles may be fashioned which are at once both beautiful and
+effective, such as, for instance, window, mantel, fable and bracket
+lambrequins, scarfs for chairs and tables, covers for sofa pillows and
+ottomans, toilet and dinner mats, hand-bags, etc., etc., etc.
+
+
+
+
+DESCRIPTION OF TERMS USED IN CROCHET.
+
+
+_Chain Stitch._—Make a loop of twine, and draw the twine through each
+loop thus made, until the chain is of the required length.
+
+_Close Chain Stitch._—Insert the hook in loop of preceding row, and
+draw twine through both this loop and the loop on the needle at the
+same time.
+
+_Single Crochet._—Pass the hook through a loop of the last row, bring
+twine through, throw the twine around the needle and draw it through
+the two loops on the needle.
+
+_Double Crochet._—Turn the twine around the needle once, pass the hook
+through a loop of preceding row, bring twine through, throw the twine
+around the needle and draw it through two loops, turn the twine again
+around the needle and draw it through the two next loops.
+
+_Treble._—Turn the twine twice around the needle, work as double
+crochet, bringing twine through two loops three times.
+
+_Double Double Crochet._—Turn twine three times around the needle,
+work as double crochet, bringing twine through two loops four times.
+
+_Slip Stitch._—This stitch is used in joining. Take the hook from the
+last loop worked, pass it through the loop where the work has to be
+joined; then take the first loop spoken of and draw it through.
+
+* The above are the primitive or foundation stitches, of which all
+fancy stitches are modifications or combinations.
+
+
+TWINE.
+
+The best twine for crocheting is what is known as seine or macramé
+cotton twine, and is sold by numbers; 6 and 9, the finer numbers, are
+used for tidies, etc.; 12, 16 and 20 for lambrequins. Care should be
+taken in purchasing the twine, to get the best quality, as there are
+several grades made; that having a cream color, bordering on écru,
+makes the best work.
+
+
+NEEDLES.
+
+A five-inch bone needle, even and smooth, is considered the best for
+crocheting with twine.
+

+FRINGE.
+
+
+All the Lambrequin designs given are finished with a fringe, which is
+easily made, and the following directions will apply to all: Cut the
+twine twice the required length, double in center; take two pieces
+together, put the needle through the stitch nearest the edge, and with
+the hook catch the twines in center and draw through until a loop is
+formed on the opposite side; pass the needle through the loop and draw
+the four ends through, then pull tight.

+HAMMOCK.
+

+The tools for making a hammock are—first, a “seine needle,” which
+may be obtained at any fishing-tackle store, and, second, what is
+called a mesh board. The needle is made of hard wood and of the shape
+represented in illustration. The mesh board is simply a piece of common
+wood about 6 inches long by 2 or 2½ inches wide, according to the size
+of the mesh desired, and bevelled on one side, being one-half the
+stretched measure of the mesh. Having provided yourself with the tools
+as above, proceed as follows:
+
+Take a piece of twine a foot or so long and tie the ends together,
+making a loop on which to knit the first row of meshes, and hang it on
+a hook or nail; then fill your needle by tying the end of the twine to
+the pin in the middle of the needle, and carrying it around the notch
+and back to the pin until the needle is full, being careful to turn the
+needle over every time, so that both sides will be alike.
+
+Tie the loose end of twine on the needle to the loop mentioned above,
+and place the mesh board underneath close to the loop; then carry the
+needle down under the board and up through the loop, drawing the twine
+tight; place the thumb (the mesh board being held in the left hand) so
+as to hold the twine in position on the edge of the mesh board, and
+throw the bight (or slack) of the twine loosely towards the left, and
+carry the needle under the right side of the loop and up on the left
+side through the bight, and pull it down snugly.
+
+The same operation should be repeated, with the exception of putting
+the needle _between_ the loop and the bight, as it must be carried
+_through_ the loop and the bight at the same time. In order to make
+the knot more secure, it would be well to throw the bight again to the
+left, and bring the needle up through the loop a second time, thus
+making the knot double. This suggestion applies to the first row of
+meshes only.
+
+Continue this until you have a sufficient number of meshes for the
+width of the hammock, 30 being the usual number; then slip the meshes
+off the mesh board and allow them to hang from the twine on the needle;
+then place the mesh board underneath, in the same manner as at first,
+and repeat the original operation, putting the needle through the first
+mesh instead of the loop, as in the first instance, and making the knot
+as before. (See illustration.) Follow the meshes along in the same way,
+until the hammock is the desired length. It is usual to make it about
+six feet long when stretched for a full-sized hammock, and then to put
+on each end strings about two feet long, reaching from each end mesh to
+an iron ring about an inch and a half in diameter, to which the ropes
+for swinging it are to be attached. These strings can be put on in the
+same manner as the meshes are knit by simply substituting a piece of
+board about 2 feet long and 3 or 4 inches wide for the mesh board and
+using it lengthwise.
