Già troppo grande, e -troppo fortunato, lo mandarono presto in Egitto, per colpir -l'Inghilterra sulla via delle Indie, o piuttosto per disfarsi di lui. Fu -sorte che non gli lesinassero gente, nè sussidii navali. Ebbe -quarantamila combattenti, tredici vascelli di linea, a cui potè unirne -due veneti da sessantaquattro cannoni, sei fregate pur venete, e otto -francesi, settantadue legni minori e quattrocento trasporti, con -diecimila marinai. Così, mentre la Francia rimasta senza di lui si -disponeva a perdere quanto aveva per lui guadagnato di qua dalle Alpi, -egli andava a vincere, come Cesare, in Egitto, e con la molteplice -operosità del velocissimo ingegno ordinava quella famosa spedizione -scientifica, onde ancora il suo nome è collegato al rifiorire degli -studi orientali. Se l'armata del Brueys vinceva ad Aboukir, com'egli -alle Piramidi e al monte Tabor, qual mutamento nel mondo! Segno che -l'occasione era passata anche laggiù, lungo le foci del Nilo; e -l'ammiraglio non ebbe, come il generale, la virtù di afferrarla. - -Perduto il buon punto sul mare, tornava inutile, o quasi, proseguir -l'impresa per terra. Risoluto il ritorno dopo le tristi nuove del -continente (e fu altra fortuna che l'ammiraglio nemico gli mandasse, -quasi a scherno, i pubblici fogli), trafugatosi per prodigio alla -crociera inglese, giunto inaspettato a Parigi, fatto il colpo del 18 -brumale contro l'Assemblea dei Cinquecento, non più servitore ma arbitro -e console, lascia ai due colleghi del triumvirato il governo, e con -arditezza di concepimento non altrimenti superata che dalla celerità -dell'atto, si difila dalle Alpi a capo di sessantamila combattenti, -piomba su Milano, si volge su Marengo, e in un colpo fulmineo restaura -le sorti della guerra. A quel colpo l'Italia inferiore, come la -superiore, si costituisce tutta in repubbliche. Troppe, e fu errore, -ond'egli pure partecipò; scusabile, nondimeno, poichè non era -stabilmente il padrone. Quando lo fu, come primo console, poi come -imperatore, non vide opportuno nè maturo il consiglio di uno Stato solo -dalle Alpi alla Sicilia; aspettava un'altra occasione, la preparava: -frattanto l'Italia dava a lui ben più di duecentomila spoltroniti, per -le sue guerre d'Austria, di Germania e di Russia. E questa Italia mostrò -di sentire tutta la grandezza dell'eroe, che in Francia non aveva -destato estri di poeti inneggianti, nè meditazioni di cospiranti -intelletti. Il _Genio del Cristianesimo_ e il Concordato con Roma furono -due opere affini; ma i loro autori non s'intesero, e il visconte di -Chateaubriand, ingegno e stile mirabilmente adatto a magnificare, rimase -malcontento, si trasse in disparte. Quanto alla signora di Stael, la -dotta Corinna non diede altro all'Impero se non un libro avverso, -l'_Allemagne_, glorificazione del genio d'un popolo nemico. Ed egli, che -amava i vasti concepimenti dell'epica, vedendo già un altro Omero in -quello smilzo Ossian del Macpherson, rimpolpato e rimpannucciato -dall'arte del Cesarotti, egli che amava i forti contrasti della tragedia -e volentieri avrebbe fatto principe dell'Impero il Corneille, se -l'autore del _Cinna_ si fosse degnato di nascere un secolo e mezzo più -tardi, non ebbe un grande artista della parola che celebrasse le sue -grandi imprese e i suoi vasti disegni. Il suo prosatore Fontanes tesseva -discorsi accademicamente laudatorii, ma gli guastava i concetti -universitarii, per vantarsene poscia ai ritornati Borboni. Più fortunato -di qua dalle Alpi, ebbe dal Monti il _Prometeo_ e il _Bardo della Selva -Nera_, classiche e romantiche costruzioni di un ingegno poderoso, ma non -condotte a termine; e forse avrebbe meritato assai più di rimanere in -tronco la senile _Pronea_ tra le stanche mani del traduttore e -ricreatore di Ossian. Abbondavano, è vero, da noi le cantate cortigiane; -ma non fu di cortigiano il panegirico di Pietro Giordani, o fu di tale -che intese nel potentissimo uomo l'altissimo spirito, e perchè lo -intese, e come lo intese, non dubitò di esaltarlo. Ugo Foscolo volle e -non volle; sentiva il grand'uomo, ma ricordava Campoformio: e chi, -riconducendosi col pensiero a quel tempo e ai giudizi d'allora, vorrebbe -dargliene biasimo? Serviva intanto colla spada; restò in forse colla -penna; ad ogni modo, irrigidendo davanti al re dei re i nervi della sua -prosa, solo assai tardi uscì nelle mal celate ostilità dell'_Ajace_. -Taccio dei minori, che il favore del trono accomunava allora, ed anche -preponeva ai maggiori, come il Paradisi e il Lamberti. Se gl'ingegni -italiani non fecero di più, pensiamo che si dolevano non avesse fatto -anch'egli di più per la fortuna d'Italia, dond'era così lietamente -incominciata la sua. - - - - -II. - - -Poteva? Non così presto, certamente, come avrebbe voluto. Gli fu -mestieri crescere in autorità, ed anche volgersi ad altro, legato egli -stesso al carro della sua grandezza; uomo e simbolo ad un tempo, uomo -nella personale ambizione, simbolo della rivoluzione in lui espressa e -non del tutto soffocata sotto l'ermellino imperiale; costretto a seguire -il destino, che lo lasciò vincer molto, senza concedergli interamente i -frutti e gli arbitrii della vittoria. Così un ghiacciaio si avanza, -prepotente nel suo volume, e con apparenza di onnipotente nella enormità -del suo peso; ma stanno sott'esso le spine montuose e le insenature -profonde che governano inavvertite i suoi moti. Pensate ancora ch'ebbe -triste la vita, nella miseria del cominciare, nella difficoltà del -giungere, nella necessità di vincer sempre, non riposando mai la -fortuna; tra tanti sforzi d'ingegno e di volontà solo avendo un istante -degno di sè, sulle rive del Niemen, in quella mirabil visione di potenza -universale, ahimè spartita con un interlocutore non capace d'intenderla. -Per tutto l'altro, infelice; infelice nelle prime nozze, quantunque -abbia voluto concedere a sè come altrui l'illusione del contrario; -infelice nelle nuove, e più nella facilità con che gli fu consentito di -scioglier le antiche; infelice nella famiglia, tutta ambizioni ed -appetiti insaziabili; infelice nei cooperatori, colmi di benefizi ed -ingrati, onde la più felice sua nomina parrà ancora quella che non fece, -di Pietro Corneille principe dell'Impero. E questa figura, epica nel -colmo della potenza, divien tragica nell'eccesso della sventura. È un -Prometeo, che non avrà rapita alla vôlta del cielo, ma bene ha potuto -assicurare agli uomini la scintilla delle libertà civili; un Prometeo a -cui non è mancata la rupe, Sant'Elena, nè l'avvoltoio, Hudson Lowe. Tale -l'ha inteso il popolo, che raro s'inganna; il popolo, che ingrandisce -qualche volta le immagini, ma solo per renderle a sè stesso più chiare. -Così crebbe nelle fantasie popolari l'immagine di Carlomagno; il quale -fu tanto grande per ciò ch'egli fece, più grande per ciò che disegnava -di fare, grandissimo poi per il sogno che aveva ardito sognare. E non -paia fuor di luogo il paragone, se tra due imperi quasi mondiali, eretti -appena e sfasciati, si è aggruppata come intorno a due poli magnetici -tutta la poesia della leggenda europea. Men fortunato Napoleone, apparso -in tempi di luce così meridiana, che la leggenda, amica delle brume, non -poteva più fiorire ed espandersi; e a lui s'imputarono tutte le cose che -non aveva potute, come se non le avesse volute; laddove a Carlomagno non -si fe' colpa di ciò che il suo impero aveva di caduco e il suo disegno -di errato. È storia che vinti in tante guerre i Sassoni, gli Avari, i -Turingi, gli Slavi, i Danesi e i Longobardi, padrone di tanta parte del -mondo conosciuto, senz'altro competitore di gloria che il lontano -signore di Bagdad, tremasse di sgomento al veder giungere una scorreria -di pirati Normanni alle rive della Gallia Narbonese. Pianse, il potente -imperatore; e ne aveva ben d'onde, per l'opera sua minacciata. I padroni -del mare hanno sempre fatto piangere i signori della terra. - -Ma perchè nella compiuta maestà dell'edifizio si mostra la crepa? Forse -ha errato l'artefice, e nell'error suo sta la ragione della caduta? O -non c'è piuttosto una forza superiore agli uomini ed alle loro faticose -costruzioni? Di rado la vogliamo riconoscere, procedendo con cieca -logica nelle nostre deduzioni sistematiche. Ma quando ci siamo spinti -troppo innanzi, intravvediamo qualche volta il pauroso abisso, e in -quell'abisso un disegno più largo, che comprende i nostri e li confonde, -una volontà più grande, tanto più grande quanto più oscura, che -soverchia la nostra e l'annienta. Nè giova essere stati al posto del -sole, e nella sua dignità. Anch'egli, l'astro maggiore, centro del -nostro sistema planetario, che ci fa palpitar d'amore e tremare di -reverenza, obbedisce ad una forza più lontana, attratto, come un povero -pianeta, nelle vicissitudini ignorate di un sistema più vasto. E allora -s'intende, confusamente s'intende quel che tanto dispiace alla nostra -superbia, quello che tanto volentieri si dimentica dalla nostra -iattanza. - -Pure, mai nato di donna fu più grande e in tal condizione di smisurata -potenza. Alessandro, forse, Annibale e Cesare, furono più eccelsi -capitani di lui, sulla cui strategia, sulla cui tattica, cercando in che -veramente consistessero, e se obbedissero a costanti principii, si -disputa ancora. Ma di quei tre, il primo nacque padrone, gli altri due -cominciarono legittimi adoperatori di forze patrie. Non così l'uomo che -tornava all'ozio impotente della vita privata dopo la più avventurosa -delle sue guerre, e doveva chiedere il segreto della fortuna ai rischi -del 18 brumale. Console e imperatore, ebbe ingegno e volontà di far -tutto, nella guerra e nella pace; e tutto han cominciato da allora a -negargli, con critica minuta, arcigna, implacabile, l'ingegno militare e -il valor personale, il cuore ed il senno, la magnanimità, la prudenza. -Le passioni, accese lui vivo, erano scusabili ancora; meno s'intendono, -lui morto, divampanti nei posteri. Onestissimi giudici ne han fatto un -mostro, tale da infamare non solamente sè stesso, ma il quarto di secolo -che lo ha tollerato acclamandolo. Altri che in lui videro il pazzo, -hanno perfino giudicata la sua mano di scritto, osservando la follìa -dilagante nelle variazioni e nei mancamenti progressivi di quella firma, -ch'egli era costretto a vergare sempre più frettoloso, diecine da prima, -poi centinaia di volte in un giorno. E questi ha conquistata la sua fama -negandogli il genio delle armi; e quegli ha saputo scusare la -mostruosità del fenomeno umano ritrovandoci benignamente un caso di -atavismo, una riapparizione fatale di venturieri italiani. Un grande! -esclama ironico un altro; sì, perchè l'ha strombazzato tale dall'alto di -dieci volumi un piccolo uomo. Ma ecco, il piccolo uomo è morto; e durano -e si vanno moltiplicando gli studiosi di quella grandezza; duravano, -mezzo ignorati, e tornano in luce i primi saggi del severo ingegno -precoce, onde amorosi indagatori hanno ricavata la genesi degli eccelsi -pensieri; nè manca d'altra parte, come per dare risalto a quella luce, -l'ombra del Direttorio, uscita dal suo sepolcro, o dal limbo dei -bambini, con le memorie del Barras, per contendergli invano i primi -lauri di Tolone. Quella grandezza cresce, di mezzo agli stessi tentativi -che si fanno per atterrarla. Se è una macchia, come pare a qualche -coscienza sonnambula, l'Europa, lady Macbeth novella, è impossente a -cancellar quella macchia; le acque istesse dell'Oceano l'hanno fatta più -vivida. Lui spento appena, si chiese: "fu vera gloria?" Ai posteri -furono anche lasciati gli elementi del giudizio, scolpiti in istrofe -immortali. E i posteri possono risponder oggi, a tanta distanza da quel -giorno, giudicando la lontana figura dallo spazio ch'ella occupa ancora. -Quella figura campeggia immane, anche agli occhi del popolo che le fu -più severo. Quanto a noi Italiani, cui già più volte han rimandato il -nostro "Buonaparte", saremmo felici di tenerlo, come un grand'uomo di -più; il che in una galleria di duemilaseicento anni e di centoquattro -generazioni non guasta. Se pensiamo al bene ed al male che ha fatto, -tirando le somme e facendo le proporzioni, volgeremmo al panegirico. Con -lui e per lui le idee giovani non perirono più; "uscite dalla tribuna -francese, cementate dal sangue delle battaglie, decorate dai lauri della -vittoria, salutate dalle acclamazioni dei popoli, sancite da trattati e -alleanze di principi, rese familiari agli orecchi come alle labbra dei -re" non potevano più dare indietro; checchè facesse la reazione, -imperversando da capo trent'anni, dovevano essere la fede, la religione, -la coscienza dei popoli. Quest'êra memorabile si collegò alla persona di -lui; ed egli poteva ne' suoi ultimi giorni vantarsene. È giusto il -vanto? domandano i più miti. Non fu egli inconsapevole autore di tanta -fortuna, alla maniera degli antichi re, cui le storie del vecchio stile -usavano ascrivere tutti gli eventi occorsi nei loro anni di regno? Anche -questo si è tentato di provare, dicendo: l'Europa andava da un pezzo -incontro alle novità; onde, nello stesso modo che le idee liberali -potevano far cammino senza le violenze della rivoluzione francese, -avrebbero anche potuto trionfare senza le ambizioni del Bonaparte. Ma -quasi a sfatare in anticipazione il comodo ragionamento, esse andavano a -naufragio con quelle istesse violenze, e parvero sepolte con le -ambizioni di lui sotto il salice di Longwood. Aggiungete non potersi -escludere dal problema storico il personaggio che ne è il dato -principale e quasi tutto lo riempie. Noi non possiamo giurare che, messo -fuori quel dato, sarebbero andate egualmente le cose; possiamo creder -piuttosto che avrebbero preso un altro indirizzo, muovendo ad un altro e -non più riparabil naufragio. Lui assente dall'Europa, non si riperdeva -forse nel Novantanove il conquistato del Novantasette? Lui sparito dalla -scena del mondo, non fu la Santa Alleanza? e non ne durarono gli effetti -in Europa, quantunque in Francia la rivoluzione, forzatamente attenuata, -scoppiasse ancora due volte, nel Trenta e nel Quarantotto? Diciamo -dunque, per comporre la lite, e senza sicurezza di dir tutto il vero, -che la filosofia del Settecento avrebbe temperato il dispotismo senza -distruggerlo, e tenuto l'individuo, la famiglia, la società, in quelle -povere condizioni, in quelle disgraziate relazioni di cui sentivano la -noia innanzi la promulgazione del codice Napoleonico. La gran -rivoluzione francese, per contro, avrebbe instaurati in casa propria e -per sempre i diritti dell'uomo? o non sarebbe caduta piuttosto sotto i -colpi della coalizione europea? Notate che, spenti i Girondini, ella non -aveva più un contrappeso salutare; ucciso il re, la regina, l'erede, i -nobili a migliaia, uomini e donne, aveva offeso l'umanità, non riuscendo -a conservarsi tra le viziose debolezze del Direttorio, se non per le -gelosie, le discordie, le inerzie dei potentati d'Europa. - -Comparve allora l'ingegno sovrano. Fu un audace, sicuramente; ma -l'audace poteva essere un soldataccio, e fu un legislatore, quasi un -profeta armato, per dirlo nel maraviglioso stile di messer Nicolò. Ah, -perchè non si trattenne egli al titolo e all'ufficio di console, il -guerriero legista? Ce ne dorremmo, sì, ma pensando ancora che egli, -console a tempo, e non solo, accompagnato e contenuto da mediocri, non -avrebbe fatto nulla. Console unico, a vita, sarebbe stato con altro nome -un imperatore. Ma forse la modestia del titolo poteva esser buon freno -all'orgoglio; e la dignità sua poteva contentarsene, come al tempo loro -se ne contentavano le civiche virtù di Valerio Publicola e di Quinzio -Cincinnato. Ma non erriamo noi, rievocando quei nomi? e non trasformiamo -un pochino nella nostra immaginazione gli uomini che li hanno portati? -Erano uomini semplici, in semplici età; possidenti agricoltori, amavano -i loro quattro jugeri di terra; si sarebbe fatto poco cammino con tali -consoli e dittatori, che volevano essere ogni sera di ritorno al -focolare domestico. Felici gli Stati che possono contentarsi di tali -uomini e commetter loro le proprie sorti. Ma se ne sarebbe contentata la -Francia moderna? Non se ne contentò l'istessa Roma antica, che con altri -uomini e più vaste ambizioni domò Cartagine, aperse al suo pensiero, -alle sue leggi, la Spagna, la Grecia, la Siria, l'Egitto, le Gallie e le -terre settentrionali dall'Istro alla Mosa. E si fosse pur contentata la -Francia; sarebbe stata quieta l'Europa monarchica, l'Europa dispotica, -con sotto gli occhi uno stato senza re? Non gliene avrebbero imposto -uno, da Coblenza o da Vienna, da Londra o da Pietroburgo, per cessare il -mal esempio, tanto più pericoloso quanto era più nuovo? Dunque?... -Dunque, storicamente fatale il despota della libertà, che fu il -rinnovatore della carta e del diritto d'Europa, il turbatore di tutta la -vecchia compagine d'interessi, di privilegi e di pregiudizi, tessuta al -finire del Medio Evo per danno universale. Che se, infrenatagli -l'ambizione, quell'uomo portò la pena del troppo che aveva voluto -essere, noi non dovremo credere per ciò che senza quella sua ambizione -si sarebbe ottenuto il meglio. Bene il mondo credette di respirare, -quando egli cadde; e prime respiraron le madri. _Bellaque matribus -detestata_: è verissimo. Ma come respirassimo noi Italiani, stimandoci -tanto felici di quella caduta, lo seppe il più manifestamente felice di -tutti, Federigo Confalonieri, sepolto quindici anni nelle segrete dello -Spielberg, e non trattone fuori se non per languire undici anni ancora, -fantasma di sè stesso, condannato a morire esule sconsolato dalla terra -dei padri. - - - - -III. - - -Tutto bene, adunque? No, non ho detto questo, non voglio dir questo. Non -si rimescola il mondo, senza commettere errori; e non tutti i giorni -della sua vita terrena quella grande anima ebbe presente la misura -prescritta alle umane ambizioni. Il colosso aveva il piede di creta; ma -era un colosso, e solo poichè fu caduto, prosteso a terra, i pigmei -poterono dalla lunghezza misurata argomentarne l'altezza. È anche -giustizia il riconoscere com'egli fosse trascinato di continuo alla -guerra, e dalla guerra continua istigato alle crescenti ambizioni. N'è -un cenno evidente in ciò ch'egli scriveva al ministro di Francia a -Londra, poichè l'Inghilterra ebbe rotta la pace d'Amiens, che fu il mal -seme della gente Europea: "l'Inghilterra mi obbligherà a conquistare -l'Europa. Il primo Console non ha che trentatrè anni, e non ha distrutto -ancor altro che stati di second'ordine; chi sa quanto tempo gli -occorrerà per risuscitare l'impero d'Occidente?" Eccovi Carlomagno, col -suo tentativo di rinnovare la potenza d'Augusto: e franca la spesa di -vedere in che differissero le due forme del tentativo, come si -diportassero rispetto a quella Roma ch'era stata capo dell'Impero, e che -Costantino aveva, se non donata, lasciata prendere al Papa, secondo la -curiosa espressione di Giuseppe De Maistre. Carlomagno v'andò a cinger -corona: era un credente; al tempo suo non si discuteva il diritto -temporale dei Papi, non bene uscito netto dalle pretensioni di Bisanzio: -se ne tornò, bastandogli d'essere stato il salvatore dei Papi, contro -Longobardi e Greci, in vario grado scismatici. Napoleone certamente -sognò un'altra cosa, poichè in materia di religione pensava altrimenti. -L'autore del Concordato, il restauratore del culto cattolico in Francia, -non era un ateo, ma si ricusava tuttavia alla dogmatica del -Cattolicismo; in quella sua specie d'incredulità razionale vedeva anzi -un benefizio pei popoli, una guarentigia di tolleranza per tutte le -sètte, non essendo egli dominato da alcuna. E l'uomo che a Sant'Elena -leggeva nel Vangelo il discorso della Montagna, confessandosi "rapito -dalla purezza, dalla sublimità, dalla bellezza di quella morale", dopo -aver detto: "tutto proclama l'esistenza d'un Dio", soggiungeva ancora: -"ma tutte le religioni sono evidentemente figliuole degli uomini". E -nondimeno, giunto al consolato, s'affrettava a ristabilire quella dei -padri, che era per lui "l'appoggio della sana morale, dei veri -principii, dei buoni costumi". Un altro argomento gli soccorreva, in -materia di religioni: "L'inquietudine degli uomini è tale, che lor -bisogna il vago, il maraviglioso, offerto da esse". E qualcuno avendo -osato dirgli che sarebbe potuto finire devoto, "no, rispondeva, e me ne -duole, perchè sarebbe un grande conforto.... Il sentimento religioso è -così consolante, che il possederlo è un benefizio celeste. Di quale -aiuto non mi sarebbe egli qui? Che potere avrebbero più uomini e cose su -me, se, accettando da Dio i miei rovesci, i miei dolori, ne attendessi -ricompensa in una vita futura?" - -Qui si disegna già l'uomo che fra cinque anni morente accoglierà i -conforti d'una religione positiva. Chi lo ha visto così sincero, -intenderà come abbiano liberamente fruttificato quei germi nella -solitudine dei colloqui con Dio. Ma nell'ordine politico, ai giorni -della potenza suprema, abbiamo in Napoleone un filosofo alla maniera del -Voltaire. Fu certo un mancamento, non aver visto prima il nodo per cui -si collegano, distinguendosi, religione e politica, il regno dei cieli e -il regno del mondo. Dante lo aveva trovato, nella virilità dell'ingegno -suo, senza debolezze come senza ipocrisie, da uomo moderno più ancora -che da uomo medievale. Ma io riconoscerò a Sant'Elena la sincerità di -Napoleone, che non dubitò di mostrarsi ai posteri qual era stato -davvero, Carlomagno del secolo XIX, ben diverso da quello del secolo -VIII. Il suo lavoro, dopo tutto, mirava all'impero d'Occidente, -attraverso la unità dell'Italia, passando sulle rovine della potestà -temporale dei Papi. Al Pontefice rioffriva Avignone, toltogli col -trattato di Tolentino. Appena gli nacque il figliuolo, lo stesso -pensiero gli suggeriva di chiamarlo "re di Roma", quasi complemento a -quel titolo di "re d'Italia" ch'egli stesso riteneva da cinque anni, -dichiarando di non volerlo serbare per sè, poichè meditava un regno -italico indipendente, che non poteva essere quello ristretto di -Lombardia con la capitale a Milano. Ma quel più largo disegno andò -soggetto alle vicende della potenza sua, vicende di grado, di qualità, -di opportunità. Sotto il generale del Direttorio, al caldo delle -vittorie sue, si erano formate parecchie repubbliche, la Ligure, la -Piemontese, la Cisalpina, la Romana, la Partenopea: sotto il primo -Console, i fasci un po' sparsi incominciavano a stringersi: sotto -l'imperatore dei Francesi (2 dicembre 1804) e re d'Italia (16 maggio -1805); per quasi spontanea domanda del doge di Genova, la Liguria "primo -teatro delle _sue_ vittorie" era annessa all'Impero, col Piemonte, con -Parma e Piacenza, unendosi tosto Piombino e Lucca in ducato per la -sorella Elisa. Il generale del Direttorio aveva dato all'Austria la -Venezia, con Istria e Dalmazia, per ripigliarle imperatore, dopo -Austerlitz, nel trattato di Presburgo (26 dicembre 1805); e subito -cacciati i Borboni, Napoli e Sicilia eran dati in reame a suo fratello -Giuseppe, mentre Elisa era innalzata granduchessa d'Etruria, e Paolina -creata duchessa di Guastalla.
