+EXCELENTÍSSIMO PRESIDENTE DA REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA:

+Na minha qualidade de Presidente da Comissão Executiva da Câmara Municipal
+de Coimbra, ao ter de brindar V. Ex.ª, sinto que se apoucam as minguadas
+forças do meu espirito para a condigna elevação de minhas saudações até à
+dignidade de tão alta posição, e até às culminâncias não menos altas do
+Vosso mérito.
+
+Se, em meu nome individual, eu viera para levantar aqui a minha voz
+sincera, mas destoante, por sua insignificância, do vibrante esplendor
+festivo em que fulgura esta hora viva, certamente a comoção tomaria o passo
+á ousadia; e o meu silêncio seria o melhor bocado de oiro, com que eu podia
+contribuir para que a fulgência de tanto brilho se não minguasse com este
+reflexo pálido da minha palavra, de arte tão empobrecida.
+
+Mas a imponência do imperativo, que me comanda, não admite escusa--Tenho de
+falar.
+
+
+
+
+                EXCELENTÍSSIMO PRESIDENTE:
+
+
+A cidade de Coimbra recebeu-vos com os sentimentos da mais sincera elevação
+e nobreza que os seus brios patrióticos impõem a uma condigna saudação ao
+Supremo Magistrado da Nossa República.
+
+Aprumou-se numa exaltação jubilosa, para que pudésseis medir a envergadura
+do seu entusiasmo; mas curva-se, perante Vós, na reverência profunda do seu
+respeito à dignidade da alta Magistratura que representais.
+
+Vão, pois, os nossos cumprimentos à Vossa Pessoa ilustre, frementes do
+sentimento profundo que o mais acrisolado patriotismo pode acender em
+corações portugueses.
+
+A subida honra da visita de Vossa Excelência a esta Cidade, marca, nos
+fastos da sua história brilhante, uma data de relevo e esplendor
+seguramente nunca excedido, se é que alguma vez já foi igualado.
+
+De esperar seria, pois, que, aqui, na minha voz, ressoasse um eco, ao
+menos, dêsse entusiasmo que canta e ri em todos os corações, e dessa
+alegria que trasborda dos peitos de todos nós, como filhos desta Pátria
+querida, agora aconchegados em torno do mais ardente dos seus corações e da
+mais fúlgida das suas almas.
+
+Mas onde há dotes de eloquência rara, ou àsas de inspiração profunda, que
+possam apanhar em síntese as vibrações que enchem estes ares de harmonias,
+ou iriar com brilhos aurifulgentes as facetas rútilas do alto sentimento
+patriótico que, em Vossa Excelência, se incarna divinamente?
+
+Eu quisera ser o taumaturgo ou o iluminado capaz de caldear, nas forjas
+duma alquimia sobrenatural, as almas e os corações, num bloco de diamante,
+onde fulgurasse a condensação luminosa das radiações dos mais puros ideais;
+porque, então, no silêncio duma comoção profunda, eu passaria da minha mão
+à vossa mão, esse bloco mudo que, só nas scintilações do seu brilho, vos
+diria melhor que todas as frases, qual a moeda de gratidão com que a Cidade
+de Coimbra pagava a subida honra de Vossa visita.
+
+E eu não Vos diria nada.
+
+Mas nessa síntese sublimada da quintessência dos puros ideais, Vós
+saberieis ler tudo; porque em todas as faces brilhariam reflexos da Vossa
+luminosa Alma sublinhados pelo nosso amor, e de cada aresta chispariam
+scintilações como os relampagos da Vossa eloquência, falando-vos assim a
+Alma de Coimbra, num simbolismo de luz, a única linguagem digna dEla e de
+Vós.
+
+
+EXCELÊNCIA! Se, em nome do Município de Coimbra, eu brindo, jubilosamente,
+ao Excelentíssimo Presidente da Nossa República, como cidadão português, eu
+não posso deixar de brindar tambêm em Vossa Excelência a pessoa alta e
+nobre do Excelentíssimo Dr. António José d'Almeida, como figura aureolada
+pelo nimbo esplendoroso das mais lídimas virtudes cívicas.
+
+A sua estatura moral não é função, apenas, dum determinismo político,
+porque as proporções elevadíssimas do molde social, em que se enquadra,
+ampliam-se pela exuberância do prestígio pessoal que Vos ilustra; com a
+dignidade da elevada Magistrura que representais, defronta-se altíssimo,
+tambêm, o pedestal de todos os corações que Vos elevam à suprema incarnação
+dos nossos sentimentos patrióticos.
+
+Jámais, na atmostera bucólica desta terra linda, tão impregnada de lirismos
+poéticos, esvoaçou a pomba alada dum espírito, que mais se desprendesse do
+tremedal da terra para o céu dos altos ideais; e foi nessa altitude ampla
+da ideia que um forte amor patriótico vos inspirou o pensamento scintilante
+e fogoso, revelando vosso génio dominador e empolgante, pelo brilhantismo
+do Verbo ao serviço de radiosa esperança.
+
+Essa alma, exuberante de aspirações generosas, faiscando em reflexos
+diamantinos de puros sentimentos iluminados, ensaiou aqui suas asas de
+condor, a pairar sobre o pântano duma monarquia pútrida, naquele vôo firme
+de águia que só poisa nos píncaros da crista montanhosa; e, sempre imerso
+no azul das alturas, respirando sempre e só o oxigénio dos ares limpos,
+jámais conspurcando-se ao contacto da Terra suja, irradiou daqui o vosso
+verbo luminoso como luz de névoa doirada que fosse despedida do alto, a
+espargir clarões de redenção sobre os negrumes desta Pátria, que se
+esfacelava no Calvário da História, agonisante de impotência, exangue de
+vitalidade, num pessimismo sem alentos, exausta de futuro e moribunda de
+esperanças.
+
+Foi aqui que Vosso Coração, abrasado num patriotismo ardente, se acrisolou
+nas chamas do ideal libertador; e, ao fogo das próprias inspirações, ganhou
+a incandescência que vos fez astro, a refulgir no Céu da Pátria, entre
+todos os que muito brilham nas órbitas da nossa História.
+
+Rasgando a nuvem torva que ensombrava os horizontes do futuro à vida da
+nação, fulminaram os raios da vossa eloquência a luz daqueles relâmpagos,
+com que a palavra inspirada do tribuno mais empolgante abria os olhos ao
+povo, sobre os negrumes da hora triste que passava.
+
+E essa língua em labaredas, verbo em chamas purificadoras, feito cautério
+de luz e fogo, aplicou-se à terapêutica deste país, fistulando o abcesso da
+corrupção política, que lhe corroía as fibras da acção e estrangulava os
+anceios de Liberdade.
+
+Mas, revolvendo os miasmas do pântano, por muito que nas rajadas do seu
+verbo redemoinhassem as toxinas da podridão que agitava aos ares, jámais a
+assepsia rigorosa da límpida atmosfera do seu espírito, se contaminou da
+virulência menos leal duma ideia duvidosa ou facto suspeito, que
+infiltrasse leve sombra na pureza austera da sua alma imaculada sempre.
+
+Nessa luta ingente, de ímpetos e ardores indomáveis, que vos encheram de
+convulsões épicas a grande vida de revolta até 1910, nunca, como Vós o
+dissesteis--«o braço se erguia para dar um golpe sem a outra mão desabotoar
+a camisa desnudando o peito ao ferro do inimigo».
+
+Os exemplos comoventes daquela lealdade heróica com que algumas figuras de
+lenda, desde a aurora incipiente da nossa infância nacional, bafejaram
+alguns episódios épicos da nossa História, resurgiam no coração do Exmo.
+Dr. António José de Almeida, a bafejar do hálito de idêntica lealdade
+generosa os arrebois dessa madrugada, em que a aurora dos sonhos ideais ia
+romper definitivamente, com o sol esplendente da Liberdade fulgindo no
+carro triumfante da República.
+
+Leal, nobre e generoso, sempre, como um forte: e forte como um Atlante, na
+robustez da mais austera envergadura moral, nunca o sonho audaz dum
+misticismo redentor Vos encadescia o cérebro, sem repuxar do peito a chama
+abrasada do sentimento luminoso a doirar a ideia fulgentíssima.
+
+Por isso, até mesmo quando ateáveis as fornalhas da Revolução com a
+metralha demolidora da vossa eloquência rubra, rutilavam sempre, nas
+labaredas do ideal, as estrofes do canto de guerra comoventes como um hino
+de amor.
+
+Alma de místico absorvida em sonhos de vidente, fizesteis da luz subjectiva
+da ideia o astro que ilumina toda a realidade objectiva da vossa acção.
+
+E, depois de ter dado à República todo o ardor inquebrantável da vossa fé,
+e posto sempre na politica toda a nobreza austera do vosso ideal, a
+Justiça, em prémio de toda uma vida de nobre civismo e amor pátrio,
+transfigurou os lampejos fugidios de vossa quimera de sonho nos clarões
+eternos dum diadema de glória.
+
+
+EXCELÊNCIA--Perdoareis, se o entusiasmo da minha sincera admiração excede
+os âmbitos da benevolência com que me escutais; mas eu tinha necessidade de
+evocar um pouco a alta nobreza moral da vossa vida passada, como apoio
+indestrutível à consoladora esperança do que será, para esta querida
+Pátria, a Vossa política futura.
+
+A política é uma ideia que só prospera sôbre o apoio concreto dos factos.
+Os ideais fecundos teem uma meta, que só se atinge com passo bem seguro no
+campo das realizações práticas.
+
+Nesta hora intensa, duma fermentação mundial agitada e tumultuosa, não há
+torrão de Pátria exígua, sôbre que não se revolva, formidável, o problema
+indeciso da sua vitalidade histórica. A nossa República, por ventura
+hesitante ainda nos primeiros passos da sua infância, não podia deixar de
+estremecer ao tocar-lhe a aura perturbadora dêsse cataclismo hiperbólico em
+que, parecia, os gonsos da máquina do mundo ruirem, desconjuntando-se.
+
+Mas passou. Agora, aos ímpetos brutais da força destruitiva, segue-se o
+desenvolvimento calculado das energias creadoras.
+
+Os paroxismos duma nevrose de morte dão logar às contracções tónicas dum
+intenso labor de vida.
+
+Hoje, mais do que nunca, a afirmação da existência só se faz por um
+desenvolvimento de progresso.
+
+Serão prósperos os povos que progredirem.
+
+É preciso, pois, estimular a vida, fomentar a riqueza, dar ásas ao Comércio
+para que se espanda, impulsionar os volantes da Indústria para que
+progrida.
+
+Todo o labor fecundo haure a seiva creadora da Sciência, tornando esta
+produtiva pela Indústria.
+
+Eis os dois pólos do mesmo eixo, em que os Governos teem de fazer girar a
+actividade intensa dos povos.
+
+Prestigiar a primeira com seguros elementos de progresso, animar e promover
+a segunda com sólidas garantias de êxito, eis a missão suprema dos Governos
+que saibam vêr, para além da hora triste que nos desalenta, a miragem dum
+futuro que nos reanime.
+
+
+EXCELENTÍSSIMO PRESIDENTE! Enche toda a vida de Vossa Excelência um
+denodado esforço para rasgar as vias de um futuro livre, ao nosso povo;
+fareis mercê agora, certamente, de toda a vossa autoridade e prestigio para
+crear um futuro próspero à Nação.
+
+E, nessa orientação do Vosso alto espirito patriótico, Coimbra, como
+nenhuma outra Cidade do Pais, terá jús a merecer-vos sempre a solícita
+atenção do Vosso patrocínio valioso.
+
+Esta Cidade, que é hoje o centro duma vida municipal intensa, de há anos se
+encontra francamente encaminhada, na via duma administração eminentemente
+progressiva. Graças ao esforço de inteligentes e vigorosos espíritos
+rasgados em amplas iniciativas de fomento, Coimbra tem refundido
+inteiramente o seu aspecto material e o seu valor económico, no curto
+espaço de alguns anos, como se sobre ela tivesse passado a acção renovadora
+dum século.
+
+E o seu exemplo frutifica, servindo de espelho e de estímulo a progressivas
+realizações congéneres, que se esboçam por outros municípios.
+
+Mas, Coimbra, no seu avanço já adquirido, não pode estacionar. O próprio
+benefício reconhecido nas realizações efectuadas é imperioso incentivo a
+aspirações futuras, para onde, na ampla via aberta, temos de caminhar.
+
+Uma desvelada solicitude dos Governos da Nossa República tem sido
+comprovada, na satisfação de algumas das urgentes necessidades dêste
+Município.
+
+A essa solicitude dos altos Poderes do Estado, a Cidade de Coimbra
+afirma-se-lhe reconhecida com sua mais calorosa gratidão; e corresponde-lhe
+numa inquebrantável dedicação patriótica às Instituições Republicanas;
+sendo-me, neste momento, muito agradável recordar a elevada distinção com
+que, há pouco ainda, foi galardoada, pelo Exmo. Ministro da Guerra, a sua
+fidelidade ao Regimen.
+
+Bem fundamentada será, pois, a nossa esperança de que todas as justas
+aspirações deste Município encontrarão nos Governos da República, e no
+valioso patrocínio de V. Ex.ª, aquele acolhimento e reforço necessários
+para que as iniciativas fecundas se concretisem em realidades de progresso.
+
+E, como hoje, neste dia tão jubilosamente festivo, sempre a Alma de
+Coimbra, na expressão profundamente sincera da sua viva fé republicana,
+poderá gritar com o maior entusiasmo:

+Executiva da Câmara Municipal de Coimbra, ao
+ter de brindar V. Ex.ª, sinto que se apoucam as
+minguadas forças do meu espirito para a condigna
+elevação de minhas saudações até à dignidade de
+tão alta posição, e até às culminâncias não menos
+altas do Vosso mérito.</p>

+<p>Se, em meu nome individual, eu viera para levantar
+aqui a minha voz sincera, mas destoante,
+por sua insignificância, do vibrante esplendor festivo
+em que fulgura esta hora viva, certamente a comoção
+tomaria o passo á ousadia; e o meu silêncio
+seria o melhor bocado de oiro, com que eu podia
+contribuir para que a fulgência de tanto brilho se
+não minguasse com este reflexo pálido da minha
+palavra, de arte tão empobrecida.</p>
+
+<p>Mas a imponência do imperativo, que me comanda,
+não admite escusa--Tenho de falar.<span class="pn">{4}</span></p>

+da mais sincera elevação e nobreza que os
+seus brios patrióticos impõem a uma condigna saudação
+ao Supremo Magistrado da Nossa República.</p>
+
+<p>Aprumou-se numa exaltação jubilosa, para que
+pudésseis medir a envergadura do seu entusiasmo;
+mas curva-se, perante Vós, na reverência profunda
+do seu respeito à dignidade da alta Magistratura
+que representais.</p>
+
+<p>Vão, pois, os nossos cumprimentos à Vossa Pessoa
+ilustre, frementes do sentimento profundo que o
+mais acrisolado patriotismo pode acender em corações
+portugueses.</p>
+
+<p>A subida honra da visita de Vossa Excelência a
+esta Cidade, marca, nos fastos da sua história brilhante,
+uma data de relevo e esplendor seguramente
+nunca excedido, se é que alguma vez já foi igualado.</p>
+
+<p>De esperar seria, pois, que, aqui, na minha voz,
+ressoasse um eco, ao menos, dêsse entusiasmo que
+canta e ri em todos os corações, e dessa alegria
+que trasborda dos peitos de todos nós, como filhos
+desta Pátria querida, agora aconchegados em torno
+do mais ardente dos seus corações e da mais fúlgida
+das suas almas.</p>
+
+<p>Mas onde há dotes de eloquência rara, ou àsas de
+inspiração profunda, que possam apanhar em síntese<span class="pn">{5}</span>
+as vibrações que enchem estes ares de harmonias,
+ou iriar com brilhos aurifulgentes as facetas rútilas
+do alto sentimento patriótico que, em Vossa Excelência,
+se incarna divinamente?</p>
+
+<p>Eu quisera ser o taumaturgo ou o iluminado capaz
+de caldear, nas forjas duma alquimia sobrenatural,
+as almas e os corações, num bloco de diamante,
+onde fulgurasse a condensação luminosa das radiações
+dos mais puros ideais; porque, então, no
+silêncio duma comoção profunda, eu passaria da
+minha mão à vossa mão, esse bloco mudo que, só
+nas scintilações do seu brilho, vos diria melhor que
+todas as frases, qual a moeda de gratidão com que
+a Cidade de Coimbra pagava a subida honra de
+Vossa visita.</p>
+
+<p>E eu não Vos diria nada.</p>
+
+<p>Mas nessa síntese sublimada da quintessência dos
+puros ideais, Vós saberieis ler tudo; porque em todas
+as faces brilhariam reflexos da Vossa luminosa Alma
+sublinhados pelo nosso amor, e de cada aresta chispariam scintilações como os relampagos da Vossa
+eloquência, falando-vos assim a Alma de Coimbra,
+num simbolismo de luz, a única linguagem digna
+dEla e de Vós.</p>
+
+<p>&nbsp;</p>
+
+<p>E<small>XCELÊNCIA</small>! Se, em nome do Município de Coimbra,
+eu brindo, jubilosamente, ao Excelentíssimo
+Presidente da Nossa República, como cidadão português,
+eu não posso deixar de brindar tambêm em<span class="pn">{6}</span>
+Vossa Excelência a pessoa alta e nobre do Excelentíssimo
+Dr. António José d'Almeida, como figura
+aureolada pelo nimbo esplendoroso das mais lídimas
+virtudes cívicas.</p>
+
+<p>A sua estatura moral não é função, apenas, dum
+determinismo político, porque as proporções elevadíssimas
+do molde social, em que se enquadra, ampliam-se
+pela exuberância do prestígio pessoal que
+Vos ilustra; com a dignidade da elevada Magistrura
+que representais, defronta-se altíssimo, tambêm, o
+pedestal de todos os corações que Vos elevam à suprema
+incarnação dos nossos sentimentos patrióticos.</p>
+
+<p>Jámais, na atmostera bucólica desta terra linda,
+tão impregnada de lirismos poéticos, esvoaçou a
+pomba alada dum espírito, que mais se desprendesse
+do tremedal da terra para o céu dos altos
+ideais; e foi nessa altitude ampla da ideia que um
+forte amor patriótico vos inspirou o pensamento
+scintilante e fogoso, revelando vosso génio dominador
+e empolgante, pelo brilhantismo do Verbo ao
+serviço de radiosa esperança.</p>
+
+<p>Essa alma, exuberante de aspirações generosas,
+faiscando em reflexos diamantinos de puros sentimentos
+iluminados, ensaiou aqui suas asas de condor,
+a pairar sobre o pântano duma monarquia
+pútrida, naquele vôo firme de águia que só poisa
+nos píncaros da crista montanhosa; e, sempre imerso
+no azul das alturas, respirando sempre e só o oxigénio<span class="pn">{7}</span>
+dos ares limpos, jámais conspurcando-se ao
+contacto da Terra suja, irradiou daqui o vosso verbo
+luminoso como luz de névoa doirada que fosse despedida
+do alto, a espargir clarões de redenção sobre
+os negrumes desta Pátria, que se esfacelava no Calvário
+da História, agonisante de impotência, exangue
+de vitalidade, num pessimismo sem alentos, exausta
+de futuro e moribunda de esperanças.</p>
+
+<p>Foi aqui que Vosso Coração, abrasado num patriotismo
+ardente, se acrisolou nas chamas do ideal
+libertador; e, ao fogo das próprias inspirações, ganhou
+a incandescência que vos fez astro, a refulgir
+no Céu da Pátria, entre todos os que muito brilham
+nas órbitas da nossa História.</p>
+
+<p>Rasgando a nuvem torva que ensombrava os
+horizontes do futuro à vida da nação, fulminaram
+os raios da vossa eloquência a luz daqueles relâmpagos,
+com que a palavra inspirada do tribuno mais
+empolgante abria os olhos ao povo, sobre os negrumes
+da hora triste que passava.</p>
+
+<p>E essa língua em labaredas, verbo em chamas
+purificadoras, feito cautério de luz e fogo, aplicou-se
+à terapêutica deste país, fistulando o abcesso da
+corrupção política, que lhe corroía as fibras da acção
+e estrangulava os anceios de Liberdade.</p>
+
+<p>Mas, revolvendo os miasmas do pântano, por
+muito que nas rajadas do seu verbo redemoinhassem
+as toxinas da podridão que agitava aos ares, jámais
+a assepsia rigorosa da límpida atmosfera do seu<span class="pn">{8}</span>
+espírito, se contaminou da virulência menos leal
+duma ideia duvidosa ou facto suspeito, que infiltrasse
+leve sombra na pureza austera da sua alma
+imaculada sempre.</p>
+
+<p>Nessa luta ingente, de ímpetos e ardores indomáveis,
+que vos encheram de convulsões épicas a grande
+vida de revolta até 1910, nunca, como Vós o dissesteis--«o
+braço se erguia para dar um golpe sem
+a outra mão desabotoar a camisa desnudando o
+peito ao ferro do inimigo».</p>
+
+<p>Os exemplos comoventes daquela lealdade heróica
+com que algumas figuras de lenda, desde a aurora
+incipiente da nossa infância nacional, bafejaram alguns
+episódios épicos da nossa História, resurgiam
+no coração do Exmo. Dr. António José de Almeida, a
+bafejar do hálito de idêntica lealdade generosa os
+arrebois dessa madrugada, em que a aurora dos
+sonhos ideais ia romper definitivamente, com o sol
+esplendente da Liberdade fulgindo no carro triumfante
+da República.</p>
+
+<p>Leal, nobre e generoso, sempre, como um forte: e
+forte como um Atlante, na robustez da mais austera
+envergadura moral, nunca o sonho audaz dum misticismo
+redentor Vos encadescia o cérebro, sem repuxar
+do peito a chama abrasada do sentimento
+luminoso a doirar a ideia fulgentíssima.</p>
+
+<p>Por isso, até mesmo quando ateáveis as fornalhas
+da Revolução com a metralha demolidora da vossa
+eloquência rubra, rutilavam sempre, nas labaredas<span class="pn">{9}</span>
+do ideal, as estrofes do canto de guerra comoventes
+como um hino de amor.</p>
+
+<p>Alma de místico absorvida em sonhos de vidente,
+fizesteis da luz subjectiva da ideia o astro que ilumina
+toda a realidade objectiva da vossa acção.</p>
+
+<p>E, depois de ter dado à República todo o ardor
+inquebrantável da vossa fé, e posto sempre na
+politica toda a nobreza austera do vosso ideal, a
+Justiça, em prémio de toda uma vida de nobre
+civismo e amor pátrio, transfigurou os lampejos
+fugidios de vossa quimera de sonho nos clarões
+eternos dum diadema de glória.</p>
+
+<p>&nbsp;</p>
+
+<p>E<small>XCELÊNCIA</small>--Perdoareis, se o entusiasmo da
+minha sincera admiração excede os âmbitos da
+benevolência com que me escutais; mas eu tinha
+necessidade de evocar um pouco a alta nobreza
+moral da vossa vida passada, como apoio indestrutível
+à consoladora esperança do que será, para esta
+querida Pátria, a Vossa política futura.</p>
+
+<p>A política é uma ideia que só prospera sôbre o
+apoio concreto dos factos. Os ideais fecundos teem
+uma meta, que só se atinge com passo bem seguro
+no campo das realizações práticas.</p>
+
+<p>Nesta hora intensa, duma fermentação mundial
+agitada e tumultuosa, não há torrão de Pátria exígua,
+sôbre que não se revolva, formidável, o problema<span class="pn">{10}</span>
+indeciso da sua vitalidade histórica. A nossa República,
+por ventura hesitante ainda nos primeiros
+passos da sua infância, não podia deixar de estremecer
+ao tocar-lhe a aura perturbadora dêsse cataclismo
+hiperbólico em que, parecia, os gonsos da
+máquina do mundo ruirem, desconjuntando-se.</p>
+
+<p>Mas passou. Agora, aos ímpetos brutais da força
+destruitiva, segue-se o desenvolvimento calculado
+das energias creadoras.</p>
+
+<p>Os paroxismos duma nevrose de morte dão logar
+às contracções tónicas dum intenso labor de vida.</p>
+
+<p>Hoje, mais do que nunca, a afirmação da existência
+só se faz por um desenvolvimento de progresso.</p>
+
+<p>Serão prósperos os povos que progredirem.</p>
+
+<p>É preciso, pois, estimular a vida, fomentar a riqueza,
