VIAGEM AO PARNASO

 I

Sonhava com as rosas e boninas,
 com o lirio do valle e c'o arroio;
com as gentis e louras campesinas
em bucolico e rude amor saloio.

Sonhava... E já compunha um poema
 na mente escandecida de _poetico_:
 um amor innocente era seu thema;
estylo... do effeito o mais pathetico.

 Procurei as surprezas com cuidado;
 os nomes dos heroes bem sonorosos;
e dispunha-me amar, sem ter amado,
cachopas com uns olhos bem fermosos.

 Julgando-me elevado poetaço,
 a musa invoco todo sobranceiro...
Eis me sacode as orelhas mão d'aço,
tão fria como o frio de janeiro.

 * * * * *

 Arregalei os olhos lestamente,
esfreguei-os não crendo estar em mim:
 estava, sorrindo, na minha frente,
 um estafermo que descrevo assim:

Era uma velha esguia e desgrenhada
 com sorrisos bastante insinuantes.
 Vestia á grega; cara descarada;
 os olhos encovados mas brilhantes.

Sem tempo me dar a pôr-me álerta,
 com gesto de fina regateira,
mão posta na ilharga e perna aberta,
 um discurso faz, desta maneira:

 --«Larapio e massador!
 tu és um impostor
 que queres imitar,
 de Daphnis e Chloë,
 a maneira de amar.

 Meu tolo, meu pedante!
 eu vou-te, n'um instante,
 mostrar que vaes errado,
 e que tens por cabeça
 grandissimo telhado.»

Uma pausa fez, e de tom mudando,
 em _pose academica_, foi chiando:

--«O tempo do romantismo já vae bem longe:
morreu, quando morreu o derradeiro monge.
A sciencia moderna dá a orientação

Canta sómente as brancas,
o realismo puro, embora as côres quentes

 Não cantes os lirios: isso é velharia;

pelas altas regiões do deboche doirado.
Pódes fallar, tambem, no cel'bre preparado
de Gibert, de Raquin, e na Salsa-parrilha...»

--«Quem és tu? minha cara de pandilha!
 serás abelha-mestra, ou boticaria?
serás bruxa com loja de hervanaria,
ou annuncio de drogas, por acaso?»

--«Eu sou a velha musa do Parnaso
que, inspirada na sciencia dos effeitos,
 despida de rançosos preconceitos,
 abracei a moderna poesia,
e conquisto mil adeptos por dia.»

--«Ó musa moderna, eu te saúdo!
e por ti me declaro amurudo
 se ensinas a fazer al'xandrinos
 mais sonoros, bellos, mais divinos
que os gorgeios do proprio rouxinol.
 Juro!... nem cantar o girasol,
que preciso é aqui para rimar.
 Antes, porém, haveis d'explicar
 como, velhos preconceitos tu despindo,
a vestimenta conservas, que no Pindo
 usavas em a era romanesca.»

 --«Conservo-a por ser bastante fresca.
 A frescura é cousa indispensavel
 para crear um nome perduravel.»

--«N'esse caso vou cantar o nú
 como diz o dito--mesmo crú.»

--«Amigo: até isso vae sendo já safado...
e comtudo explorar o que está explorado,
por séria difficuldade, passa hoje em dia.
Com arte fina e certas manhas, todavia,
 tudo se consegue.

 Vem tu dahi commigo,

 II

 Eis-me transportado pelo espaço
 furando por pesada athmosphera,
com risco de quebrar o espinhaço,
pois nem umas azas de chimera
 a pulha da musa m'emprestou.
 Ella pela gola me agarrava
e todo o caminho me levou
 suspendido, emquanto caminhava.

Por fim pousou-me n'uma rua estreita
como um bêcco da decantada Alfama.

--«Amigo! tudo que vires, attento, espreita,
se queres ser apregoado pela Fama.
Estamos no meu Reino: aqui tudo respira
quanto a teu estro falta e tão sedento aspira.»

E vi o solo lamacento, immundo,
exhalando o cheiro acre e nauseabundo
 Aqui, além, saltavam do monturo
vadios e magros cães de torvo olhar,
 desconfiados que lhes vão disputar,
 andrajosos mendigos seus collegas,
 as presas immergidas nas bodegas.

 Escorregando como um borrachão
 vi-me em risco de beijocar o chão;

 * * * * *

 cantando, nomeava alegremente,
 á laia de cicerone intelligente:
 topei com um palacio illuminado,
e com lacaio á porta enfardalhado.

 --«Quem mora ali?»--perguntei assombrado.

 --«É a orgia! a filha do argentario
que gasta o ouro vil do usurario,
que roubando o suor do proletario...»

--«Ai! Deus meu! historia da carochinha
 que é formosa e bonitinha...»

--«Não me falles á mão! aliás
 nunca alexandrinos tu farás!

Presta ao meu discurso toda a attenção
se queres que te dê inspiração.

 --É a orgia! a filha do argentario,
que gasta o ouro vil do usurario,
e que talvez deixasse na miseria
 o pobre proletario--vil materia!

É a orgia! a impura mulher do vicio!
 de macular as timidas consciencias.

É a orgia! que, sem guardar conveniencias,
 prostitue as gordas carnes oleosas
n'um sidereo leito, ideal, de nublosas.

É a orgia!... Com seu halito pestifero
(que é mil vezes ainda mais mortifero
do que o bacillus-virgula do Ganges)
 mata o coração das _virtuosas_ Langes;

 queima innocencia e queima candura.

comprando copahiba, enxofre e capa rosa.»

 --«Attenta bem, tu, n'isto, meu bilhostre;
attenta bem, se queres que te mostre
 os arcanos da sabencia--hodierna,
 que é velho e é soez dizer--moderna.

 --Nas luxuosas salas ostentam roçagantes,
 rafadas toilettes, dignas de farçantes,
os gotosos e senís peccados mortaes,
emquanto, ao fogão, as virtudes theologaes
fazem soalheiro da vida das visinhas.

E se não fossem umas bellas niñas
 --obras de misericordia positivas--
 com toilettes de verão allusivas
 a appetitosas scenas sensuaes,

 --«Vou explorar o caso, embora indecente!»

--«Indecente és tu, por seres innocente!»

 * * * * *

De novo caminhámos. A manhã rompia.

 ..............................................

 --«Andemos mais depressa...» a musa me dizia,
«ao novo Parnaso, ao grande laboratorio
das idéas modernas; não a esse mistiforio
das drogas litterarias da classica escola:
d'isso bem sabemos que já não sou carola.
É bom ficar sabendo que ninguem faz caso
do velho e carunchoso e classico Parnaso.

 Aperta mais o passo. O ceu está nublado;

 É mais que provavel, tenho a certeza;
até parece que senti na cara
 um pingo d'agua...»
 --«Isso, sim!»
 --«Repara.

 O POETA

--«A agua que do ceu cae
e em gotas pousa na planta,
 como a perola a abrilhanta
até que por fim se vae
 rolando p'ra o chão,
 indo tornar mais fermosa
 co'a vegetação,
 quem tornou, talvez, vaidosa
 pela ostentação.

 --E a gota d'agua singela
 duas vezes a faz bella.»--

 A MUSA

--«Que este pensamento, alguem já tivesse tido,
 isso póde ser, póde ter acontecido;

 * * * * *

Dez minutos depois chovia em pingos grossos,
batendo na cara como batem tremoços,
doendo, como dói jogando entrudo bruto.
Ameaçava não ficar um fio só enxuto.

A lua no seu occaso illuminava a chuva

á entrada do Parnaso, onde descançámos.

 III

E, como isto estranhasse, a musa me explicava:

O azeite litt'rario de preço não baixava:
assim, cada luz tinha apenas a ração
 igual á d'aguardente que d'inverno dão
 aos soldados da Parvonia, filhos de Marte;
a grande alavanca do moderno ideal.--

 immoveis, lugubres, horrivelmente feias.
 Passeavam por cima vermes e centopeias;
 toldavam-nas o bolor, a humidade e o pó;

 * * * * *

Talhado em rocha escura, formas angulosas
 e salientes, phantasticas e caprichosas,

 velha deshonesta, c'roada a resteas d'alhos:
 na dextra aureo sceptro--colossal estadulho;
e, para dominar a borrasca do barulho,
 empunha, na esquerda, safardana chocalho,
 chavelho retorcido, armado co'um bogalho
 servindo de badalo--estranha campainha!

Aos pés os classicos por almofada tinha.

 As outras musas estavam acocoradas

 Os olhos em mim postos, o auditorio tinha;
 e quando esp'rava a eterna e velha ladainha
 do--quid petis--chronico, do gráu Coimbrão,
e me preparava p'ra pedir ser poetão:
 larga dama presidenta um--«como pachaste?»

Acaso viste já, do rojão a haste
 ao toiro apontada?
 a ferrea ponta penetrar-lhe o coiro,
 e c'o a cruel picada
saltar feroz com fero olhar de moiro?

 O--como pachaste--foi o rojão;
o mal ferido toiro o meu coração.

 A MUSA

 A PRESIDENTA

 O POETA

--«Cobrado tenho o animo, ó musa minha, bella:
e tambem sei usar do material barato

 A MUSA

 --«O neophito conhece o poema--palheiro--
 e diz saber guizar o _miolo d'enxergão_

 A PRESIDENTA

 --«Ouçamos. Que titulo tem?»--

 O POETA

 O POETA

--«Perdão se acaso offendi as instituições:
 á--limpeza--não quero fazer allusões.»

 A PRESIDENTA

--«Não divague, senhor! entre já na materia!
Não se faça massador e tenha pilheria.»

 O POETA

 --«Mote.

 Eu vi o Camões c'roado
 com coroa de papel doirado.»

 A PRESIDENTA

 --«Decimas, amigo, não se usam cá na tenda;

 ..................................................

--«Bravo! Bravo!» me applaudem todos presto.

 --«Salvaste-te sómente pelo gesto.
 Serve-te d'elle; não é má pimenta.»

 Accrescentando logo a presidenta:

--«Em honra ao teu gesto fradesco e manual,
vaes ter espectac'lo com todo o ritual.
Aprestae, minha côrte, as armas, a metralha
que impavido, o realismo, emprega na batalha.»

 * * * * *

 puchado p'lo Pegaso e movido a vapor.

--«A postos, meus senhores, se fazem favor.»

 IV

Apollo, que até então tinha estado occulto,
da sombra destacando o luminoso vulto,
desatrella o Pegaso do prélo bemdito
e o manda pastar em pello a _aveia do infinito_.

 Depois, berrando como qualquer sacristão
que na egreja ronca safado cantochão,
com voz desafinada entoa esta cantiga,
batendo, á cautella, o compasso na barriga:

 --«Companheiras senís, acanalhadas,
que, quando era potente, tanto amei:
 o grande caldeirão das versalhadas
 descei! descei!»

 Ligeiras, como a rapida gazella,
 atiraram-se ao _cabo_ da panella;
 e o caldeirão desceram, pressurosas,
tomando, pelo esforço, a côr das rosas.

 Depois tomaram posições sensuaes
dos quadros vivos reles e triviaes.

E os poetas, então, prostrados pela terra,
entoaram este côro, na mais alta berra.

 ORAÇÃO DOS POETAS

 --«Ó vestaes da inspiração,
 velhas donzellas:
 assumptos de sensação
 idéas bellas,
 fazei-nos inventar
 em nossos cacos;
 e fazei-nos ganhar
 bem bons patacos.

 Multiplicae os tolos
 p'ra nosso bem,
 que vos daremos bolos.
 Amen, amen, amen.»--

 APOLLO (_cantando_)

 --«A sciencia genial das bagatellas,
que tendes como a compota nas tijelas,
 lançae no caldeirão.
 Adjectivos hydropicos, lancinantes,
 figuras colossaes; como os elephantes
 em grossa multidão,
com quanta massa realista de balelas
 tendes em vossa mão:
 lançae no caldeirão
 co'a sciencia genial das bagatellas.»

Tres vezes cantou isto e calou-se.
O Pegaso fóra deu um coice.

 Avançam Euterpe e Clio
 cantando ao som de assobio.

 --«Lançamos no panellão
 um primoroso croquis
 da guerra do Rossilhão
 e dos bordeis de Paris.

 Lançamos a Rigolboche
 com rameiras messalinas,
 fazendo todo o deboche
 junto aos sapos das latrinas.

 N'alma d'um paria,
 Locusta má,
 cantando uma ária
 em tom de lá;

 Cesares romanos,
 Faustos impotentes,
 mil ratas dos canos,
 risos innocentes,

 lançamos com copahiba
 mais o nitrato de prata.
 Tirando d'um carahiba
 luxuria sensual de gata,

 teremos, com toda esta misturada,
 um adubo real p'ra a panellada.»

 Feitos uns fradescos cumprimentos
 as musas tomaram seus assentos.

 Avançam Melpomene e a Thalia
 trazendo material de gran valia.

 --«Lançamos roseas petalas d'alma
 e beijos de Julietta:
 de Tartufo a seriedade calma
 e muita outra peta;

 muitas portas falsas,
 maridos c'roados,
 mulheres com calças,
 noivos esfaimados.

 Tudo isto se acondimenta
 com choradeiras de fel,
 cantharidas e pimenta
e beijos da lua de mel.»

Ninguem faz caso d'uma tal cantiga
porque o theatro não enche barriga.

De Terpsichore e Urania chega a vez:
pouco, porém, dão p'ra este entremez.

 --«Lançamos os cometas d'aço
 em leitos sensuaes de nublosas;
 a gran mangedoura do espaço
 alem de--_muchas otras cosas_:

 a abobada commua,
 o grande guarda-sol
 dos requeijões da lua,
 e o tinteiro do sol.

 Refrescamos toda esta panellada
 com agua do ceu e gelo em palitos;
 e p'ra terminar tamanha estopada
 deitamos a dança dos aerolithos.»

 _(Um vate apontou: alguns fandangos...
uns requeijões da lua com morangos...)_

Tocou a vez á agoirenta Erato.
 Esta recitou este cavaco:

--«Não tenho que botar no caldeirão,
 seguindo uma bem sensata opinião,
 senão:
 coisas funebres e outras porcarias
 na Parvonia publicadas ha dias.

Acompanhae meu canto, Apollo, ó menestrel,
tocando n'um pente forrado de papel.

 --Almas côr de rosa,
 subindo p'ra o céu;
 a morte amorosa
 tirando o chapéo.

 Vae n'este bilhete,
 desenhado a giz,
 loculeo banquete:

 podridões gentis,
 larvas proletarias
 em mesa quadrada
 roendo nos parias...

 Não lhes digo nada...
 Se um dia morrer,
 --ai que desprazer!--
 não posso ter dobres
 de modo nenhum:

 foram-se-me os cobres
 *Na valla commum.*

 O ultimo dueto se faz ouvir alfim;
 Calliope e Polymnia cantaram assim

 --«Temos grande collecção
 de hyperboles arrojadas,
 e portentosas rajadas
 de causar admiração.

 Ha no nosso botequim
 gordos melros com chouriço,
 e tonsurado toitiço
 com carcassas d'arlequim;

 evangelhos com trufas
 e Biblia com champagne;
 e ha quem isto amanhe
 tudo em operas buffas.

 Escrevei, ó poetas namorados!
com a tinta geniosa dos enxurros
 estes sadios e modernos guisados
capazes só de sustentar os burros.

Libae poetas! e bebei n'um pulo
 o sangue com gangrena
 pelas aurifras taças de Loculo,
 nos braços da pequena.

 Lambei os lambusados pratos
 d'esta babylonica orgia:
 e p'ra rimar mettei Pilatos,
 mettei no credo a gemonia.

 E Gehovah e Jonas e Vitellio
 almoçaram aqui ventres de sapos,
e embrulharam-nos em ostias de trapos,
 andando na pandega com Aurellio.

Astarteia com os dentes de Ugolino
 roe por vezes podridões syphiliticas,
 indo depois ás sergetas mephiticas
 com Torquemada descantar um hymno.

 A luxuria d'um frade
 com varios paradoxos,
 dão da melhor vontade
 relinchos orthodoxos,
 rindo-se do cisco dos ripansos,
 e das varreduras dos missaes,
 e cabritando pelos passaes
de pescoço alçado como um ganso.

 Aqui temos muitas vezes
 Job e Falstaff e Ezequiel,
 o que rima com Ariel
 e come esterco das rezes.

Aqui vêm todas as Venus sensuaes,
 carregadas d'escarros luminosos,
 abraçadas com uns pobres gotosos
que lhes pagam as scenas jantaraes.

 Temos a latrina de Pandora
p'ra casos do aperto mais velhaco.
Tambem ha a caverna de Caco
 mas vive n'ella, Agrippina, agora.

Á noute, luzes ha, de brancos ais,
 velas, tochas de pedantes,
 ais de luz agonisantes
e mais outras lamparinas que taes.»

E tomando as reles pinturas allegoricas
 de todas estas hyperboles _semaphoricas_,
com os recortes das figuras principaes,
 funambulas e grotescas e originaes,
tudo no panellão deitaram em tropel.

 _(Um poeta não tira os olhos do papel;
e movendo a penna com rapidez electrica
escreve, a serio, esta michordia phonetica.)_

 * * * * *

Então a musa Clio, que á festa presidiu,
a palavra alterosa assim me dirigiu:

--«Neophito! acabas de penetrar os arcanos
do saber que sómente dão os muitos annos.
Não julgues porém tu, que sómente com isso,
que não passa de bagaço e reles palhiço,
 conseguirás talvez hombrear os geniaes,
 altivos, sonorosos poetas actuaes.

 * * * * *

Termina a festa. Apollo empunha a lyra d'ouro
 dedilha, debruçado no instrumento qu'rido,
o puro do fadinho, o popular, corrido.

E as musas dando á gambia, á canella,
batem o fado em roda da panella.

 Com zumbidos feios, torpes emanações,
a grande panellada ferve em borbulhões
 lascivos de luxuria, quentes, abbaciaes,
 espalhando no espaço vapores sensuaes,
emquanto que o Pegaso farto de pastar,
como burro indecente, se poz a ornear.

Sabes leitor, o que é perder a noute
no Penin, no Magina, ou nos Penachos?
ou ir á Brazaliza, ou ao Dáfundo,
Poço dos Mouros, ou Perna de Pau?
Farta e boa ceia regada de briol,
 devorada em companhia feminina
 por ventura tu já exp'rimentaste?
Já comeste bom mexilhão na Pincha,
os beefs no Gallo, as iscas no Semellas?
no Magina, nos Cestos, no Cunhal,
bebeste já o fino de Bucellas?

Leitor: se nada d'isto tu tens feito
mal pódes apreciar como se acorda
 depois d'uma tremenda borracheira.
 Emfim, nunca fizeste tal asneira...
Pois sabe como fica um desgraçado
depois da cama se ter levantado.

 Os olhos parecem estar pegados
e, mesmo após o serem esfregados,
nunca ficam lá muito bem abertos.
 Ouvimos sons determinados, certos,
 exquisitos, raros, indefiniveis.
 Pelo estomago, sensações terriveis,
 quentes e causticas, effervescentes,
 e na barriga ruidos indecentes.
 Lingua sêcca; beiços intumecidos,
 e viscosos, pegados, e feridos.
O nariz com cheiro acre, apimentado.
Mesmo que se não tenha vomitado
temos na bocca, como coiros rélhos,
--um sabor especial a ferros velhos.--

 Ahi tendes o lastimoso estado
que encontro esta manhã, sendo acordado
por um maldito burro d'um visinho.

Não imagines que hontem bebi vinho.
 Vaes ver o que em tal estado me poz;
vaes ficar sabendo o nome do algoz:

 --Este damninho sonho no Parnaso.--

E quem tem toda a culpa d'este caso
 é o poema moderno:

Creating the works from public domain print editions means that no
one owns a United States copyright in these works, so the Foundation
(and you!) can copy and distribute it in the United States without
permission and without paying copyright royalties. Special rules,
set forth in the General Terms of Use part of this license, apply to
copying and distributing Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works to
protect the PROJECT GUTENBERG-tm concept and trademark. Project
Gutenberg is a registered trademark, and may not be used if you
charge for the eBooks, unless you receive specific permission. If you
do not charge anything for copies of this eBook, complying with the
rules is very easy. You may use this eBook for nearly any purpose
such as creation of derivative works, reports, performances and
research. They may be modified and printed and given away--you may do
practically ANYTHING with public domain eBooks. Redistribution is
subject to the trademark license, especially commercial
redistribution.

*** START: FULL LICENSE ***

THE FULL PROJECT GUTENBERG LICENSE
PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU DISTRIBUTE OR USE THIS WORK

To protect the Project Gutenberg-tm mission of promoting the free
distribution of electronic works, by using or distributing this work
(or any other work associated in any way with the phrase "Project
Gutenberg"), you agree to comply with all the terms of the Full Project
Gutenberg-tm License (available with this file or online at
https://gutenberg.org/license).

Section 1. General Terms of Use and Redistributing Project Gutenberg-tm
electronic works

1.A. By reading or using any part of this Project Gutenberg-tm
electronic work, you indicate that you have read, understand, agree to
and accept all the terms of this license and intellectual property
(trademark/copyright) agreement. If you do not agree to abide by all
the terms of this agreement, you must cease using and return or destroy
all copies of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works in your possession.
If you paid a fee for obtaining a copy of or access to a Project
Gutenberg-tm electronic work and you do not agree to be bound by the
terms of this agreement, you may obtain a refund from the person or
entity to whom you paid the fee as set forth in paragraph 1.E.8.

1.B. "Project Gutenberg" is a registered trademark. It may only be
used on or associated in any way with an electronic work by people who
agree to be bound by the terms of this agreement. There are a few
things that you can do with most Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works
even without complying with the full terms of this agreement. See
paragraph 1.C below. There are a lot of things you can do with Project
Gutenberg-tm electronic works if you follow the terms of this agreement
and help preserve free future access to Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
works. See paragraph 1.E below.

1.C. The Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation ("the Foundation"
or PGLAF), owns a compilation copyright in the collection of Project
Gutenberg-tm electronic works. Nearly all the individual works in the
collection are in the public domain in the United States. If an
individual work is in the public domain in the United States and you are
located in the United States, we do not claim a right to prevent you from
copying, distributing, performing, displaying or creating derivative
works based on the work as long as all references to Project Gutenberg
are removed. Of course, we hope that you will support the Project
Gutenberg-tm mission of promoting free access to electronic works by
freely sharing Project Gutenberg-tm works in compliance with the terms of
this agreement for keeping the Project Gutenberg-tm name associated with
the work. You can easily comply with the terms of this agreement by
keeping this work in the same format with its attached full Project
Gutenberg-tm License when you share it without charge with others.

1.D. The copyright laws of the place where you are located also govern
what you can do with this work. Copyright laws in most countries are in
a constant state of change. If you are outside the United States, check
the laws of your country in addition to the terms of this agreement
before downloading, copying, displaying, performing, distributing or
creating derivative works based on this work or any other Project
Gutenberg-tm work. The Foundation makes no representations concerning
the copyright status of any work in any country outside the United
States.

1.E. Unless you have removed all references to Project Gutenberg:

1.E.1. The following sentence, with active links to, or other immediate
access to, the full Project Gutenberg-tm License must appear prominently
whenever any copy of a Project Gutenberg-tm work (any work on which the
phrase "Project Gutenberg" appears, or with which the phrase "Project
Gutenberg" is associated) is accessed, displayed, performed, viewed,
copied or distributed:

This eBook is for the use of anyone anywhere at no cost and with
almost no restrictions whatsoever. You may copy it, give it away or
re-use it under the terms of the Project Gutenberg License included
with this eBook or online at www.gutenberg.org

1.E.2. If an individual Project Gutenberg-tm electronic work is derived
from the public domain (does not contain a notice indicating that it is
posted with permission of the copyright holder), the work can be copied
and distributed to anyone in the United States without paying any fees
or charges. If you are redistributing or providing access to a work
with the phrase "Project Gutenberg" associated with or appearing on the
work, you must comply either with the requirements of paragraphs 1.E.1
through 1.E.7 or obtain permission for the use of the work and the
Project Gutenberg-tm trademark as set forth in paragraphs 1.E.8 or
1.E.9.

1.E.3. If an individual Project Gutenberg-tm electronic work is posted
with the permission of the copyright holder, your use and distribution
must comply with both paragraphs 1.E.1 through 1.E.7 and any additional
terms imposed by the copyright holder. Additional terms will be linked
to the Project Gutenberg-tm License for all works posted with the
permission of the copyright holder found at the beginning of this work.

1.E.4. Do not unlink or detach or remove the full Project Gutenberg-tm
License terms from this work, or any files containing a part of this
work or any other work associated with Project Gutenberg-tm.

1.E.5. Do not copy, display, perform, distribute or redistribute this
electronic work, or any part of this electronic work, without
prominently displaying the sentence set forth in paragraph 1.E.1 with
active links or immediate access to the full terms of the Project
Gutenberg-tm License.

1.E.6. You may convert to and distribute this work in any binary,
compressed, marked up, nonproprietary or proprietary form, including any
word processing or hypertext form. However, if you provide access to or
distribute copies of a Project Gutenberg-tm work in a format other than
"Plain Vanilla ASCII" or other format used in the official version
posted on the official Project Gutenberg-tm web site (www.gutenberg.org),
you must, at no additional cost, fee or expense to the user, provide a
copy, a means of exporting a copy, or a means of obtaining a copy upon
request, of the work in its original "Plain Vanilla ASCII" or other
form. Any alternate format must include the full Project Gutenberg-tm
License as specified in paragraph 1.E.1.

1.E.7. Do not charge a fee for access to, viewing, displaying,
performing, copying or distributing any Project Gutenberg-tm works
unless you comply with paragraph 1.E.8 or 1.E.9.

1.E.8. You may charge a reasonable fee for copies of or providing
access to or distributing Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works provided
that

- You pay a royalty fee of 20% of the gross profits you derive from
the use of Project Gutenberg-tm works calculated using the method
you already use to calculate your applicable taxes. The fee is
owed to the owner of the Project Gutenberg-tm trademark, but he
has agreed to donate royalties under this paragraph to the
Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation. Royalty payments
must be paid within 60 days following each date on which you
prepare (or are legally required to prepare) your periodic tax
returns. Royalty payments should be clearly marked as such and
sent to the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation at the
address specified in Section 4, "Information about donations to
the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation."

- You provide a full refund of any money paid by a user who notifies
you in writing (or by e-mail) within 30 days of receipt that s/he
does not agree to the terms of the full Project Gutenberg-tm
License. You must require such a user to return or
destroy all copies of the works possessed in a physical medium
and discontinue all use of and all access to other copies of
 Project Gutenberg-tm works.

- You provide, in accordance with paragraph 1.F.3, a full refund of any
money paid for a work or a replacement copy, if a defect in the
electronic work is discovered and reported to you within 90 days
 of receipt of the work.

- You comply with all other terms of this agreement for free
 distribution of Project Gutenberg-tm works.

1.E.9. If you wish to charge a fee or distribute a Project Gutenberg-tm
electronic work or group of works on different terms than are set
forth in this agreement, you must obtain permission in writing from
both the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation and Michael
Hart, the owner of the Project Gutenberg-tm trademark. Contact the
Foundation as set forth in Section 3 below.

1.F.

1.F.1. Project Gutenberg volunteers and employees expend considerable
effort to identify, do copyright research on, transcribe and proofread
public domain works in creating the Project Gutenberg-tm
collection. Despite these efforts, Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
works, and the medium on which they may be stored, may contain
"Defects," such as, but not limited to, incomplete, inaccurate or
corrupt data, transcription errors, a copyright or other intellectual
property infringement, a defective or damaged disk or other medium, a
computer virus, or computer codes that damage or cannot be read by
your equipment.

1.F.2. LIMITED WARRANTY, DISCLAIMER OF DAMAGES - Except for the "Right
of Replacement or Refund" described in paragraph 1.F.3, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation, the owner of the Project
Gutenberg-tm trademark, and any other party distributing a Project
Gutenberg-tm electronic work under this agreement, disclaim all
liability to you for damages, costs and expenses, including legal
fees. YOU AGREE THAT YOU HAVE NO REMEDIES FOR NEGLIGENCE, STRICT
LIABILITY, BREACH OF WARRANTY OR BREACH OF CONTRACT EXCEPT THOSE
PROVIDED IN PARAGRAPH F3. YOU AGREE THAT THE FOUNDATION, THE
TRADEMARK OWNER, AND ANY DISTRIBUTOR UNDER THIS AGREEMENT WILL NOT BE
LIABLE TO YOU FOR ACTUAL, DIRECT, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE OR
INCIDENTAL DAMAGES EVEN IF YOU GIVE NOTICE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH
DAMAGE.

1.F.3. LIMITED RIGHT OF REPLACEMENT OR REFUND - If you discover a
defect in this electronic work within 90 days of receiving it, you can
receive a refund of the money (if any) you paid for it by sending a
written explanation to the person you received the work from. If you
received the work on a physical medium, you must return the medium with
your written explanation. The person or entity that provided you with
the defective work may elect to provide a replacement copy in lieu of a
refund. If you received the work electronically, the person or entity
providing it to you may choose to give you a second opportunity to
receive the work electronically in lieu of a refund. If the second copy
is also defective, you may demand a refund in writing without further
opportunities to fix the problem.

1.F.4. Except for the limited right of replacement or refund set forth
in paragraph 1.F.3, this work is provided to you 'AS-IS' WITH NO OTHER
WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO
WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTIBILITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY PURPOSE.

1.F.5. Some states do not allow disclaimers of certain implied
warranties or the exclusion or limitation of certain types of damages.
If any disclaimer or limitation set forth in this agreement violates the
law of the state applicable to this agreement, the agreement shall be
interpreted to make the maximum disclaimer or limitation permitted by
the applicable state law. The invalidity or unenforceability of any
provision of this agreement shall not void the remaining provisions.

1.F.6. INDEMNITY - You agree to indemnify and hold the Foundation, the
trademark owner, any agent or employee of the Foundation, anyone
providing copies of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works in accordance
with this agreement, and any volunteers associated with the production,
promotion and distribution of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works,
harmless from all liability, costs and expenses, including legal fees,
that arise directly or indirectly from any of the following which you do
or cause to occur: (a) distribution of this or any Project Gutenberg-tm
work, (b) alteration, modification, or additions or deletions to any
Project Gutenberg-tm work, and (c) any Defect you cause.

Section 2. Information about the Mission of Project Gutenberg-tm

Project Gutenberg-tm is synonymous with the free distribution of
electronic works in formats readable by the widest variety of computers
including obsolete, old, middle-aged and new computers. It exists
because of the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and donations from
people in all walks of life.

Volunteers and financial support to provide volunteers with the
assistance they need are critical to reaching Project Gutenberg-tm's
goals and ensuring that the Project Gutenberg-tm collection will
remain freely available for generations to come. In 2001, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation was created to provide a secure
and permanent future for Project Gutenberg-tm and future generations.
To learn more about the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation
and how your efforts and donations can help, see Sections 3 and 4
and the Foundation web page at https://www.pglaf.org.

Section 3. Information about the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive
Foundation

The Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation is a non profit
501(c)(3) educational corporation organized under the laws of the
state of Mississippi and granted tax exempt status by the Internal
Revenue Service. The Foundation's EIN or federal tax identification
number is 64-6221541. Its 501(c)(3) letter is posted at

Section 4. Information about Donations to the Project Gutenberg
Literary Archive Foundation

Project Gutenberg-tm depends upon and cannot survive without wide
spread public support and donations to carry out its mission of
increasing the number of public domain and licensed works that can be
freely distributed in machine readable form accessible by the widest
array of equipment including outdated equipment. Many small donations
($1 to $5,000) are particularly important to maintaining tax exempt
status with the IRS.

The Foundation is committed to complying with the laws regulating
charities and charitable donations in all 50 states of the United
States. Compliance requirements are not uniform and it takes a
considerable effort, much paperwork and many fees to meet and keep up
with these requirements. We do not solicit donations in locations
where we have not received written confirmation of compliance. To
SEND DONATIONS or determine the status of compliance for any
particular state visit https://pglaf.org

While we cannot and do not solicit contributions from states where we
have not met the solicitation requirements, we know of no prohibition
against accepting unsolicited donations from donors in such states who
approach us with offers to donate.

International donations are gratefully accepted, but we cannot make
any statements concerning tax treatment of donations received from
outside the United States. U.S. laws alone swamp our small staff.

Please check the Project Gutenberg Web pages for current donation
methods and addresses. Donations are accepted in a number of other
ways including including checks, online payments and credit card
donations. To donate, please visit: https://pglaf.org/donate

Section 5. General Information About Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
works.

Professor Michael S. Hart was the originator of the Project Gutenberg-tm
concept of a library of electronic works that could be freely shared
with anyone. For thirty years, he produced and distributed Project
Gutenberg-tm eBooks with only a loose network of volunteer support.

Project Gutenberg-tm eBooks are often created from several printed
editions, all of which are confirmed as Public Domain in the U.S.
unless a copyright notice is included. Thus, we do not necessarily
keep eBooks in compliance with any particular paper edition.

Most people start at our Web site which has the main PG search facility:

 https://www.gutenberg.org

This Web site includes information about Project Gutenberg-tm,
including how to make donations to the Project Gutenberg Literary
Archive Foundation, how to help produce our new eBooks, and how to
subscribe to our email newsletter to hear about new eBooks.
