+Ĉe Essex Hall, je Jan. 14, laŭ la anonco en The Esperantist,
+la Membroj kaj Amikoj de la London Esperanto Club jarkunvenis. Kaj
+sekve la raporto de tiu ĉi kunveno postulas multe da spaco. Por ke
+aliaj interesaĵoj ne estu limigitaj, la kutimata Gramatiketo estas
+forigita. Mi esperas ke la legantaro aprobos tiun ĉi. La Prezidanto
+de la Klubo, Sinjoro Felix Moscheles, malfermis la kunsidon per
+longan kaj interesan Esperantan paroladon. Li diris:--
+
+Estimataj Gesinjoroj,
+
+La unuaj vortoj, kiujn mi diras je tiu ĉi unua Jarkunveno, sendube
+devas esti parolataj en la lingvo kreita de nia glora majstro,
+Doktoro Zamenhof. Kaj la unua penso, kiu sin prezentas al mi, estas
+la tre feliĉa, ke ni povas nin gratuli pri la sukcesoj, kiujn ni
+gajnis. Sed la ĝojo, kiun mi nun sentas, ne devas silentigi la duan
+penson, kiu memorigas al ni ĉion, kion ni ankoraŭ devas fari. Ni
+devas, kaj ni devas longatempe, jes, dum longaj jaroj, bataladi
+kontraŭ la antaŭjuĝoj enradikitaj en multaj el niaj samlandanoj,
+kaj ni ankaŭ devas batali kontraŭ la malhelpanta nescieco de tiuj,
+kiuj ĝis nun ne estas aŭdintaj la voĉon de nia kara lingvo.
+
+La maniero, je kiu niaj kontraŭuloj traktas niajn penadojn,
+memorigas al mi la historion de ia Germana deputato, kiu,
+interrompante la paroladon de la ministro, ekkriis "Mi ne scias viajn
+argumentojn, sed mi tute malaprobas ilin." Tiel ankaŭ estas la
+taktiko de tiuj, kiuj ĉiam provadas malhelpi la progreson de la
+mondo, kaj kiuj precipe malvolas je nia kara Esperanto. "Ni ne konas
+vian lingvon," ekkriadas tiuj ĉi, "sed ni ĝin tute malaprobas." Nu,
+tiaj blindaj kritikistoj ne povas maltrankviligi nin. Nia devizo
+estas "_Antaŭen_," kaj tiu ĉi alia eldiro de la glora Galileo:
+"_E pur si muove._" Kaj nun ni nature demandas kial _ni_, membroj
+de la Londono Klubo Esperanta povas antaŭvidi je la estonteco kun
+tiom da konfido. Ni ne similas al tiu deputato; ni serĉas la kaŭzojn
+kaj ni pesas la argumentojn de la aferoj. "Feliĉulo tiu," diris
+Virgilo, "kiu povis sciiĝi la kaŭzojn de la aferoj."
+
+Kial ni povas esti konfidemaj pri la kreskado kaj prosperado de nia
+Klubo? Tial ke ĝi tiel bonege sukcesis dum la unua jaro de sia
+estado, ni devas demandi kial ĝi tiel sukcesis. Jen la respondo je
+tiu demando. Ĝi sukcesis, ĉar ĝiaj Membroj estas per fervoro
+plenigataj kaj pretaj por senĉese labori pro la propagando de la
+lingvo. Ni posedas inter nia membraro multajn Geesperantistojn, kiuj
+nin multege helpis, instruante Esperanton senpage, farante kursojn en
+diversaj kvartoloj de Londono, de Anglujo kaj eĉ eble de la tuta
+mondo; ĉar multaj el niaj membroj estas anoj de malproksimaj landoj.
+Ni estas konfidemaj, ĉar ni havas Sekretarion (la sekvantajn frazojn
+la Redaktoro estas devigita pro la modesteco elstreki, ĉar li ankaŭ
+estas la Hon. Sek.).
+
+Miaparte, mi kredeble estas la sola kulpinda membro de la Klubo, ĉar
+mi nur faris pro ĝi la ordinaran ĉiutagan propagandon. Tamen, mi
+ĝojas atesti, ke ne malofte mi sukcesis varbi rekrutojn por nia
+Afero inter la nekreduloj. Neniu povas sin interesigi pli ol mi pri
+la celo de nia Klubo. De mia infaneco--nuntempe tre malproksima
+tempo--mi elserĉadis la rimedojn por interkonigi la diversajn
+naciojn de la mondo kaj kunligi ilin, anstataŭ malamigi, mortigi
+ilin. La plej potenca ilo por forigi la mallumon, kiu nin ĉirkaŭas,
+la ĉiampova instrumento por kunligi la diversajn naciojn de la
+mondo, estas _La Lingvo Internacia_.
+
+Ne forgesu, do, karaj gesamideanoj kaj geamikoj, ke, laborante pro la
+lingvo internacia, ni klopodas por benita kaj sankta celo; ni laboras
+por la feliĉeco de estontaj generacioj, kaj por la plibonigo de la
+civilizita mondo.
+
+Tuj post la fino de tiu ĉi interesa parolado, la Vicprezidanto,
+Sinjoro J. C. O'Connor, legis leteron de la Kasisto, Sinjoro W. T.
+Stead, kiu malfeliĉe ne povis ĉeesti pro malsaneto. Sinjoro
+O'Connor ankaŭ diris malmultajn vortojn en la Angla lingvo pri la
+rapida progreso, kiun Esperanto faris inter ni.
+
+Tiam la Hon. Sekretario legis Raporton pri la Klubaj aferoj, kiu
+estos sendata al ĉiuj Membroj.
+
+Fraŭlino Lawrence tiam donis al ni du interesajn leterojn. Unu estis
+de Sinjoro Geoghegan, en Alaska, por kiu, bedaŭre, spaco mankas. La
+alia estis de Doktoro Zamenhof, reakcentigante la fakton ke, se
+presistoj ne havas la akcentojn sur la literoj en Esperanto, ili
+ĉiam povos anstataŭi la akcentojn per la litero "H" (chi, ghi,
+jhus, ehho, shi) kaj ke la akcento sur "Ŭ" ne devas esti presata.
+Tiu ĉi eble helpos nian aferon.
+
+La Membraro de kelkaj aliaj Societoj, kiuj deziris kunligi sin kun
+ni, estis aldonita al la Londona Klubo Esperanta; kaj la oficiala
+parto de la kunveno finiĝis per fanfarado, ĉar nia kara Estro,
+Doktoro Zamenhof mem, sendis al ni paroladon per fonografo.
+
+La uzo de fonografoj certe estas gravega ilo por la lernado de la
+elparolado de Esperanto, kaj tiuj, kiuj havas ilin, estos saĝaj, se
+ili aĉetos Esperantajn cilindrojn. Sinjoro Rees, de la Modern
+Language Press, 13 Paternoster Row, London, afable venis por pruvi al
+ni tiun ĉi fakton, per la cilindro de Doktoro Zamenhof, kaj alia el
+The Esperantist. La paroladon kiun Doktoro Zamenhof sendis
+tiel afablege al ni, mi jam estis kopiinta, antaŭ ol la transskribo
+alvenis. Tiu ĉi fakto pruvos al skeptikuloj, ke la paroloj de nia
+Estro Varsovie tute estis Londone kompreneblaj al ni.
+
+Estimataj Sinjorinoj kaj Sinjoroj,
+
+Ne havante la eblon partopreni persone en la unua jarkunveno de la
+Londona Klubo Esperanta, mi sendas per fonografo mian koran saluton
+al ĉiuj partoprenantoj en la kunveno. En mia imago mi prezentas al
+mi, ke mi sidas nun inter Vi, estimataj Anglaj amikoj de la ideo de
+lingvo internacia, kaj mi ĝojas kune kun Vi pro la belaj fruktoj,
+kiujn Via energia laborado donis en la daŭro de la foririnta jaro.
+Antaŭ unu jaro nia afero estis ankoraŭ tre malmulte konata en Via
+lando, kaj nun ni havas en Via lando jam tre multe da varmegaj kaj
+sinceraj amikoj; ni havas diversajn klubojn de Esperantistoj, ni
+havas konstantajn kursojn de Esperanto, ni havas belan gazeton
+Esperantan. Preskaŭ ĉio estas la frukto de laborado de la Klubo
+Londona, kiu povas esti fiera je la rezultato de sia unuajara penado.
+Al la noblaj kaj energiaj kondukantoj kaj laborantoj de la Londona
+Klubo Esperanta nia afero ŝuldas koran dankon.
+
+Parolante pri la sukcesoj de la Klubo Londona mi ne devas forgesi pri
+tiu malgranda rondeto Esperantista en Keighley, kiu metis la komencon
+por nia afero en Anglujo. Nian koran saluton al la Esperantistoj
+Kiĥlianoj!
+
+La laboradon de la Londona Klubo Esperanta la tuta mondo observas kun
+grandega intereso. Ni ĉiuj esperas kaj antaŭsentas ke, pli aŭ
+malpli frue, Londono fariĝos unu el la plej gravaj centroj de
+nia afero por la tuta mondo. Londono longe dormis; sed kiam ĝi
+vekiĝis, tio ĉi estos kiel vekiĝo de leono. Potenca voko iros el
+Londono kaj ĉiam pli kaj pli sonados kaj resonados en ĉiuj partoj
+de la mondo. Kun atento la popoloj aŭskultados la voĉon venantan el
+la potenca centro de la angle-parolantaj regionoj. Kiam pri frateco
+de popoloj kaj pri neŭtraleco de internaciaj rilatoj ekparolos tia
+potenca popolo kiel la angla, la mondo aplaŭdos kun entuziasmo, kaj
+tiu sankta afero, por kiu ni batalas ekmarŝos rapidege.
+Esperantistoj en Londono, Esperantistoj en Anglujo, laboru kuraĝe
+kaj energie. Malfacila, tre malfacila, estas la semado, sed dolĉaj
+kaj benitaj estos la fruktoj. Granda kaj grava estas Via rolo. La
+tuta mondo Esperantista rigardas Vin kaj multe de Vi esperas.
+
+Tiu ĉi parolado treege plaĉis al la aŭdintaro, kiuj korege dankis
+la Doktoron pro lia aminda saluto. Sinjoro Motteau kun tri aliaj
+bonege kantis lian belan himnon "Espero" (presita je la dek-sesa
+paĝo de The Esperantist), kaj ĉiuj entuziasme kunkantis la
+ĥoraĵon. Post multaj paroladetoj kaj bela poemeto, kiun elparolis
+Fraŭlino Schäfer, la kunveno finiĝis, kaj ĉiuj el la
+partoprenintoj revenis hejmen pripensantaj kiel helpi la kreskadon de
+Esperanto en Anglujo, kaj tra la tuta mondo.
+
+
+At Essex Hall, on Jan. 14, as announced in The Esperantist,
+the members and friends of the London Esperanto Club held their
+annual meeting. And consequently the report of this meeting demands
+much space. In order that other interesting matter should not be
+limited, the usual short grammar is left out. I hope readers will
+approve of this. The Club's President, Felix Moscheles, Esq., opened
+the meeting by a long and interesting speech in Esperanto. He said:--
+
+Ladies and Gentlemen,
+
+The first words I say in this first annual meeting must, undoubtedly,
+be spoken in the language created by our illustrious master, Doctor
+Zamenhof. And the first thought which occurs to me is the most happy
+one that we may congratulate ourselves on the successes which we have
+gained. But the joy I now feel must not silence the second thought
+which reminds us of everything which we still have to do. We must,
+and for a long time, yes, for long years, keep on fighting against
+the rooted prejudices of many of our fellow-countrymen, and we also
+have to contend against the obstructing ignorance of those who, till
+now, have not heard the voice of our prized language.
+
+The manner in which our opponents treat our efforts calls to mind the
+tale of a certain German deputy who, interrupting the speech of the
+Minister, cried out, "I do not know your arguments, but I thoroughly
+disapprove of them." So also are the tactics of those who continually
+endeavour to hinder the world's progress, and who bear an especial
+ill-will against our valued Esperanto. "We do not know your language,"
+these are ever proclaiming, "but we thoroughly  disapprove of it!"
+Now, blind critics of that sort cannot disconcert us. Our motto is
+"_Forwards_," and this other saying of the glorious Galileo: "_And
+nevertheless it moves._" And now we naturally ask why we, Members of
+the London Esperanto Club, can look into the future with so much
+confidence. We do not resemble that deputy; we seek for the causes
+and weigh the arguments of things. "Happy that man," says Virgil,
+"who has been able to discover the causes of things."
+
+Why may we be confident as to the continued growth and prosperity of
+our Club? Since it has succeeded so very well during the first year
+of its existence, we must ask why it has thus succeeded. Here is the
+answer to that question. It has succeeded because its members are
+filled with fervour, and are ready to labour ceaselessly to spread
+the language. We possess among our members many Esperantists who have
+very greatly helped us in teaching Esperanto without charge, in
+holding classes in various parts of London, of England, and even of
+the whole world; for many of our members are inhabitants of distant
+lands. We are confident because we have a Secretary (the sentences
+following the Editor is compelled by modesty to delete, as he is also
+the Hon. Sec).
+
+I, for my part, believe I am the only blamable member of the Club, as
+I have only assisted it by the ordinary daily propaganda.
+Nevertheless, I rejoice to state that not infrequently have I
+succeeded in enrolling recruits for our Cause from among the
+incredulous. Nobody can interest himself more than I about the
+purpose of our Club. From my childhood--now a very remote period--I
+have continually been seeking out means for making the various
+nations of the earth acquainted with one another, and to cause them
+to unite instead of hating and killing each other. The most powerful
+means for dispelling the darkness which surrounds us, the
+ever-powerful instrument for uniting the various nations of the
+earth, is _the International Language_.
+
+Do not forget, then, dear fellow-thinkers and friends, that, in
+working for the cause of the international language, we are devoting
+ourselves to a blessed and a holy aim; we are striving for the
+happiness of future generations, and for the amelioration of the
+civilised world.
+
+At the termination of this interesting speech the Vice-President, J.
+C. O'Connor, Esq., read a letter from the Treasurer, W. T. Stead,
+Esq., who was not able to be present on account of a slight illness.
+Mr. O'Connor also said a few words in English on the rapid progress
+Esperanto has made amongst us.
+
+Then the Hon. Secretary read a Report of the Club's affairs, which
+will be sent to all Members.
+
+Miss Lawrence then gave us two interesting letters. One was from Mr.
+Geoghegan, in Alaska, for which, unfortunately, we have not space.
+The other was from Dr. Zamenhof, once more accentuating the fact
+that, if printers have not the accents over Esperanto letters, they
+may always substitute the accents by the letter "H" (ch, gh, hh, sh,
+jh), and that the accent over the "Ŭ" need not be printed. This
+will, possibly, help our Cause.
+
+The Members of some other Societies, who wished to unite with us,
+were added to the London Esperanto Club; and the official part of the
+meeting terminated with a flourish, for our dear Chief, Dr. Zamenhof
+himself, had sent us a speech on the phonograph.
+
+The use of phonographs is certainly an important means of studying
+the pronunciation of Esperanto, and those who have access to them
+will be wise in getting Esperanto records. Mr. Rees, of the Modern
+Language Press, 13, Paternoster Row, London, kindly came to prove
+this fact by means of Dr. Zamenhof's record, and another one from
+The Esperantist. I had already copied the speech which Dr.
+Zamenhof thus kindly sent before the transcript arrived. This fact
+will prove to sceptical people that our Chief's words in Warsaw were
+quite intelligible to us in London.
+
+Esteemed Ladies and Gentlemen,
+
+Not having the power of participating in person in the first annual
+meeting of the London Esperanto Club, I send by phonograph my hearty
+greeting to all participants in the meeting. In my imagination I
+picture to myself that I now sit with you, esteemed English friends
+to the idea of an international language, and I rejoice with you at
+the fine fruits which your energetic continuous labour has given in
+the course of the past year. One year ago our Cause was still but
+little known in your land, and now we already have in your land very
+many most warm and sincere friends; we have various Esperanto groups,
+we have permanent Esperanto classes, we have a beautiful Esperanto
+Gazette. Almost all this is the fruit of the labour of the London
+Club, which may be proud of the result of its first year's
+endeavours. To the noble and energetic conductors and workers of the
+London Esperanto Club our Cause owes most hearty thanks.
+
+In speaking of the successes of the London Club I must not forget
+that little Esperantist circle in Keighley, which gave a start to our
+movement in England. Our hearty greeting to the Keighley
+Esperantists.
+
+The entire world observes with very great interest the work of the
+London Esperanto Club. We all hope and anticipate that, sooner or
+later, London will become one of the most important centres of
+our Cause for the whole world. London has for a long time slept;
+but when it awakens it will be as the awakening of a lion. A mighty
+voice will issue forth from London, and will sound and resound in
+all parts of the earth. The nations will listen with attention to
+the voice issuing from the centre of the English-speaking world.
+When such a powerful nation as the English begins speaking of the
+brotherhood of nations and the neutrality of international relations,
+the world will applaud with enthusiasm, and that sacred Cause for
+which we contend will march forward with great strides. Esperantists
+in London, Esperantists in England, work courageously and
+energetically. Difficult, very difficult, is the sowing, but sweet
+and blessed will be the fruits. Great and important is your _rôle_.
+The whole Esperantist world watches you and hopes much from you.
+
+This speech greatly pleased the audience, who most heartily thanked
+the Doctor for his kind greeting. Mr. Motteau, with three others,
+sang most effectively his beautiful hymn "Espero" (printed on the
+page 16 of The Esperantist), and all joined in the chorus
+with enthusiasm. After many short speeches and a pretty poem recited
+by Miss Schäfer, the meeting came to an end, and all the
+participants returned home thinking how to help the spread of
+Esperanto in England, and throughout the world.

+KIEL FONDI ESPERANTAN GRUPON.

+La fondigo de Esperanta Grupo, por ke ĝi havu bonsukceson, postulas
+multe da kapableco de organizado, entuziasmon senliman, grandan
+paciencon, kaj firman decidon ke la grupo prosperos, malgraŭ la
+malfacilaĵoj, kiuj staras en ĝia vojo.
+
+Sendube la kreado de tia societo aŭ grupo kaŭzos al vi amason da
+laborojn, kiun ĉiu ajn krom entuziasmulo prave povus nomi sklaveco.
+Kalkulante la korespondadon, la verkadon de artikoloj, kaj la faradon
+de ĉio, kion ni povas por gajni la atenton de la skeptikema Publiko,
+plie la varbadon de aliaj samideanoj por ricevi ilian kunhelpon, la
+laboro vere estas senfina. Sed aliparte, la rezultatoj de viaj penoj
+estos rekompenco multe pli granda ol sia kosto, ĉar, interalie, oni
+konatiĝas kun multaj interesaj personoj, ĉeestas ĉe multaj
+instruantaj priparoladoj, kursoj, k.t.p., kaj, krom tio, ĝuados

+Unue, estas la Publika Gazetaro, institucio, kies gravaj utilaĵoj
+por tia movado kiel tiu-ĉi, estas absolute necesegaj. Ĝi liveros al
+ni la solan efektivan ilon por disvastigi Esperanton inter la
+ĝenerala publiko. Mi konsilas personajn paroladojn kun Redaktoroj,
+la plimulto el kiuj jam interesigas sin je lingvaj aferoj, kaj mi
+kredas, ke vi renkontos nenian malfacilaĵon priparoladi Esperanton

+ĝian utilecon komercie, literature kaj sociale, devos esti

+Nun tiam kiam, nia afero reale ekmovas en tiu ĉi lando (pardonu min

+estas la progreso, kiun ĝi jam faris, kiam oni konsideras ke apenaŭ
+pasis dek du monatoj de ĝia komenciĝo), mi estas certa, ke
+troviĝos multaj Esperantistoj ĉe diversaj partoj de Britujo, kiuj
+tre volonte donos sian subtenon al la afero, skribante leterojn en
+la Gazetaro pro la fondo de ia ajn Klubo, Grupo, aŭ Societo. Tia
+korespondado sendube pruvos, ke ekzistas multe da kontraŭuloj
+al nia ideo. Tio-ĉi estas neevitebla por ia nova movado, kaj
+iliaj kontraŭdiraĵoj devas esti ĝentile aŭskultataj, kaj lerte
+rebatitaj de iu el ni, kiu posedas la necesan kapablecon por tia
+laboro. Ni ĉiam memoru, ke tia kontraŭeco pli multe valoras por ni
+ol apatio kaj indiferenteco.
+
+Elvokinte dum kelke da tempo, intereson pri la afero, kaj tiel
+kaŭzis ian parton de la publiko iĝi dezireman eklerni pli da ĝi,
+faru publikan paroladon pri la temo de Helpanta Lingvo Internacia.
+La Prezidanto devas esti loka eminentulo ia.
+
+Anoncoj de la kunveno devos enpresiĝi en la lokan Gazetaron.
+Ankaŭ estos bone, ke vi petegu la apogon de la diversaj Institucioj
+Literaturaj de la lokaĵo, kaj, aranĝinte la kunvenon, alsendu al
+ĉiu Sekretario, por dissemado inter la membroj, cirkuleretojn
+sciigantaj ĝian daton, lokon kaj celon.
+
+Je la finiĝo de la parolado, invitu disputadon, kaj tuj anoncu la
+fondon de la nova Grupo (nature, la regularo, proponoj, k.t.p., devas
+esti antaŭe formulitaj), decidu pri la titolo de la Grupo, difinu
+ĝian celon, kaj elektu la registaro, k.t.p. Tion farinte petu al
+viaj aŭdantoj, ke ili tuj fariĝu membroj.
+

+Ĉi tiuj estas la ĉefaj principoj, laŭ kiuj mi ekfondis la
+Societon, kies Hon. Sekretario mi estas; kompreneble ne sen havinte
+la valoran kunhelpon de la aliaj membroj (el kiuj konsistas la nuna
+Komitato), kaj ankaŭ tiun de la nelacigebla Hon. Sekretario de la
+Esperanto Klubo, la Redaktoro de tiu ĉi Gazeto.
+
+Mi kore esperas, ke tiuj ĉi malmultaj rimarkoj utilos al samideanoj,
+kaj ke ili estu kuraĝigitaj por fondi Grupojn en tiaj regionoj, kie
+neniaj nun troviĝas.
+
+
+HOW TO FOUND AN ESPERANTO GROUP.
+
+
+The founding of an Esperanto Group, so that it should be successful,
+demands much organising ability, boundless enthusiasm, great
+patience, and firm determination that the group shall prosper, in
+spite of the difficulties which stand in its path.
+
+Undoubtedly the creation of such a society or group will cause you an
+amount of work which anyone other than an enthusiast would justly
+name slavery. In reckoning up the correspondence, the writing of
+articles, and the accomplishing of everything we can do to gain the
+attention of the sceptical public, besides the enrolling of other
+adherents in order to gain their coöperation, the work is truly
+endless. But, on the other hand, the results of your trouble are
+recompense far greater than the cost, for, among other things, one
+becomes acquainted with many interesting persons, is present at many
+edifying lectures, classes, etc., and, besides this, one enjoys a
+number of other advantages which are well worth, the labour expended.
+
+Of course it is hardly necessary to say that your great exertions
+certainly do not cease when you have founded the group. In fact, they
+have only just commenced.
+
+One will always find in a new movement like Esperanto many persons
+who will willingly take it up while the interest lasts, which is
+generally aroused by any novelty; but, as soon as it ceases to be
+talked about, they quietly let it drop. Of such members one must take
+especial care; should any one of them discontinue attending the
+classes or seem to lose interest in the subject, write a short letter
+or pay him a call to assure him that the group needs his
+coöperation.
+
+Now, as regards the _modus operandi_ for founding a group.
+
+In the first place, there is the Public Press, an institution whose
+uses in such a movement as this are absolutely essential. It will
+give us the only effectual means for spreading Esperanto among the
+general public. I advise personal interviews with Editors, the
+majority of whom are already interested in matters linguistic, and I
+believe you will not encounter any difficulty in discussing Esperanto
+with them, and in finally obtaining their promise of support.
+Articles giving a sketch of the movement from its commencement, also
+examples for illustrating its uses for commerce, literature, and
+society must be submitted. As often as possible correspondence _pro
+and con_ should be initiated.
+
+Now that our cause really begins to move in this land, (excuse me if
+I take the present opportunity to say how remarkable, in my opinion,
+is the progress it has already made when one considers that scarcely
+twelve months have passed since its commencement), I am certain that
+many Esperantists will be found in various parts of Britain who most
+willingly will give their support to the movement by writing letters
+to the Press in favour of the foundation of any Club, Group, or
+Society. Such correspondence will doubtless prove that there exist
+many opponents to our proposal. This is inevitable in any new scheme,
+and their adverse comments must be politely listened to, and
+instructively refuted by any of us who possess the necessary
+capability for such work. Let us ever bear in mind that this
+opposition is to us of far greater worth than apathy and indifference.
+
+Having aroused, for a time, interest in the subject, and thus having
+caused a certain section of the public to become desirous of learning
+more about it, give a public lecture on the theme of an Auxiliary
+International language. The Chairman should be someone of local
+eminence.
+
+Announcements of the meeting must be printed in the local Press.
+It would also be well to seek the support of the various Literary
+Institutions of the neighbourhood, and, having arranged the meeting,
+to send to every Secretary, for distribution to the members, bills
+announcing its date, place, and purpose.
+
+At the termination of the lecture invite discussion, and then and
+there announce the foundation of the new Group (obviously the rules,
+proposals, etc., must be drawn up beforehand), fix the title of the
+Group, define its purpose, and elect its officers, etc. This done,
+ask your audience to at once become members.
+
+The subscription must be so small as to form no obstacle to anyone's
+joining.
+
+These are the chief principles by which I have founded the Society
+whose Hon. Secretary I am, but certainly not without having had the
+valuable coöperation of the other members (of whom the present
+Committee is composed), and also that of the indefatigable Hon.
+Secretary of the Esperanto Club, the Editor of this Gazette.
+
+I sincerely hope that these few remarks will be useful to
+Friends-in-Esperanto, and that they will be encouraged to found
+Groups in those localities, where none at present exist.
+

+Grizaj nuboj tiradas tien malalte sur la ĉielo, preskaŭ kun manoj
+preneblaj. Kiel nigraj dikaj buloj sidas korvoj sur pintoj de nudaj
+senfoliĝitaj arboj, ĉie kaj tie malrapide, mallaŭte ekflugante.
+Multaj grandaj akvogutoj de la matena nebulo pendiĝas sur la
+branĉoj malsupreniĝinte ilin: larmoj de naturo postplorantaj al la
+pasintaj belaj somertagoj. Malĝojeco en la naturo, Malgajeco en homa
+koro.

+El la budo, sur la korto, sonadas laŭtega hundbojado. Jam de frua
+mateno ĝi sonadas. La granda nigra hundo bojas. Li bojas ĉar li

+akompanadis, sed nun oni lin alĉenigis kaj li ne povante al sia

+la koloro, ŝiaj estis grizabluaj, liaj brunaj, sed la esprimo en ili

+Sur la korto reĝis nun silentado, sed ne por longe. La bela
+fraŭlino foriris kaj Oje ree malgaje bojadis.--Post kelkaj tagoj la
+bojado de Oje enuigis la belan fraŭlinon kaj, ĉar li ne ĉesis,
+restante ĉiam alĉenigita ŝi, preninte belan pezon de rostita
+viando kaj irinte al la budo, ĵetis ĝin tien, dirante "Havu, manĝu
+kaj kvietiĝu!" Ŝi eldiris tion malkare, malmole kaj foriris sen ia
+kutima amema vorto, sen kareso. Hodiaŭ ŝi estis iom ĉagrenita, la
+bela fraŭlino.

+Malgaje postrigardis Oje sian amantan malproksimiĝantan

+ALILANDAJ KUNBATALANTOJ.
+

+Estas bedaŭrinde ke, ĝis la nuna tempo, Germanujo ne estas estinta
+grava helpanto al nia Afero. Estas do pli ol ordinara plezuro
+lerni, ke Grupo fondiĝis en la ĉefurbo de tiu lando. La "Berlina
+Esperantista Grupo" espereble fariĝos centro de multaj estontaj
+societoj, kaj ĉiuj Germanaj Samideanoj devas skribi al unu el la
+membroj de ĝia estraro. La Hon. Sekretario estas Sinjoro J. Borel,
+Prinzenstrasse, 95, Berlin.

+
+Ankaŭ estas plezurege fari anoncon pri alia grupfondiĝo, en pli
+malproksima regiono. Ni ĉiuj bone scias ke Meksikujo estas tre riĉa
+lando, sed nur antaŭ kelkaj tagoj ĝi aldonis la karan Esperanton al
+siaj aliaj trezoroj. La Gazeto _El Minero Mexicano_ enpresis tutan
+paĝon pri la fondo de tiu ĉi plej juna grupo, en la Hispana kaj
+Esperanta lingvoj, kaj kompreneble tiu ĉi apogo de tia grava
+ĵurnalo multe helpos niajn novajn kunbatalantojn.
+
+La Sekretario estas Doktoro A. Vargas, kiu plezure donos pluajn
+sciiĝojn pri ĝi. Ĉar multaj gesamideanoj estas dirintaj, ke
+Esperanto pli similas je la Hispana ol je alia ajn lingvo, mi
+presigis kelkajn liniojn el tiu ĉi anonco en la lingvo de Cervantes.
+Ĉu Esperantistoj, kiuj ne konas la Hispanan lingvon, povos ĝin
+kompreni?

+Sed, nunatempe, troviĝas pli de Esperantistoj, kiuj parolas la
+lingvon de Dante, ol tiun de Cervantes, kaj, eble, frazo en la Itala
+lingvo ankaŭ estos komprenebla por tiuj el miaj legantoj, kiuj tute
+ne komprenas tiun ĉi belan sudan lingvon. Ni legu eltiraĵon el
+"_Malta_," skribita de la tiea sindonema Sinjoro Dominic Ciantar.
+"L'Esperanto non mira neanche ad abattere alcuna delle lingue;
+al contrario esso promette di servire come chiave per acquistarle.
+I libri che trattano sullo studio dell' Esperanto sono oramai
+tradotti in diciotto lingue."

+Mi esperas, ke la legantaro pardonos tiun ĉi enpreson de lingvo alia
+ol la helpo internacia, sed ili estas enkondukitaj, ĉar estus
+interese ekscii, kiun el tiuj ĉi du lingvoj pli similas je
+Esperanto.

+Kaj sendube la malmultaj vortoj en la Itala lingvo tre plaĉos al
+niaj fervoraj Maltaj Gesamideanoj. Sciigo pri la fondo de forta Malta
+grupo (72 membroj) aperis en la Januaro Esperantist.
+
+Lia Moŝto Napoleone Tagliaferro, Estro de la Malta Edukafako estas
+la Prezidanto de tiu ĉi Societo, kaj Doktoro C. Sammut, Profesoro
+ĉe la Universitato, estas Vic-Prezidanto. Plie, je la tago de la
+Nova Jaro, la Redaktoro de tiu ĉi Gazeto ricevis tre afablan
+leteron, kiu sciigis lin pri lia elektiĝo kiel Hon. Prezidanto de la
+Grupo.
+
+Kvankam li multe klopodadis pri la naskiĝo de la Grupo, li tute ne
+atendis tian honoron. Tamen, esperante ke li povu multe helpi siajn
+tieajn amikojn dum la estonteco, li dankeme akceptis la honoron, kaj
+deziras per la kolonoj de The Esperantist sendi sian koran
+dankesprimon. Kompreneble la Estro de la Grupo estas Doktoro Zamenhof
+mem, kiu afable sendis sian gratulon kun la espero ke Maltujo rapide
+antaŭmarŝos ĝis la pordoj de akordado internacia.

+Sinjoro Jonko Davidov sendis la sekvantan leteron:--

+"Mi faris sukcesindan paroladon pri Esperanto en la salono de la
+Silistra (Bulgarujo) instruista lernejo antaŭ ĉiuj lernantoj
+instruistoj, kun permeso de la Direktoro. Post la parolado mi
+malfermis senpagan kurson pri Esperanto en la sama lernejo antaŭ 32
+instruistoj, estontaj disvastigistoj de Esperanto. La kurso iras
+sukcesplene."

+Sinjoro Davidov estas Sekretario de la Silistra Esperanta Klubo, kaj
+sendube tiu ĉi kurso tre helpos la aferon en Bulgarujo, kie jam
+troviĝas multe da samideanoj.
+
+Bedaŭrinde, la spaco mankas por la enpreso de la alia letero, kiun
+tiu ĉi sinjoro afable estas sendinta, kaj kiu proponis organizon
+inter la diversaj grupoj Esperantistaj. Sed la longa letero de
+Doktoro Zamenhof jam traktis pri tiu ĉi afero.

+En la komenciĝo de Januaro aperos la unua numero de la _Juna
+Esperantisto_, revuo por gejunuloj redaktata tute en Esperanto. Ĝi
+eliros ĉiudumonate (6 numeroj en jaro) po almenaŭ 16 paĝoj
+aŭtografie presataj. Ĝia abonkosto estas du frankoj (1/9), kaj la
+Redaktoro estas Sinjoro Hector Hodler, 9, Avenue des Vollandes,
+Geneva, Switzerland.

+La Redaktoro deziras danki la multenombrajn amikojn, kiuj afable
+estas sendintaj artikolojn por estontaj ekzempleroj de The
+Esperantist. Malfeliĉe estas tute neeble tuj respondi pri la
+taŭgeco kaj presebleco de tiuj ĉi artikoloj, kaj li esperas, ke
+amikoj pardonos la neeviteblajn malrapidojn.

+
+En la lasta numero de via tre estiminda ĵurnalo, vi konsentis
+publikigi proponon kiun mi, kune kun Sro. Ch. Lambert (pri tio
+via ĵurnalo nekorekte raportis), sendis al vi pri kunveno de
+Esperantista Kongreso kaj ebla priparolado, tiu-okaze, de la demando
+pri Akademio. Petinte nian tre karan Majstron, Dro. Zamenhof, ke li
+konigu sian opinion, mi ricevis la jenan gravegan leteron:
+
+"Kara Sinjoro,--Vian ideon pri la aranĝo de internacia
+kongreso de Esperantistoj mi trovas tute bona. Sed por ke tia
+kongreso donu al nia afero ne malutilon sed nur utilon, ĝi devas
+esti aranĝita laŭ la sekvantaj principoj:
+
+1. Ĝi devas esti bone kaj zorge aranĝita, havi multe da
+partoprenantoj kaj havi la karakteron de granda, solena kaj imponanta
+_festo_ de internacia frateco, por ke la gazetoj de la tuta mondo
+multe parolu pri ĝi kaj por ke ĝi estu plena de entuziasmo kaj veku
+en la tuta mondo entuziasmon kaj deziron aliĝi al ni. Krom paroloj
+oni devas aranĝi komunajn kantojn en Esperanto, eble eĉ ian
+internacian ludon aŭ publikan konkurson; oni devas aranĝi en ia
+granda teatro prezentadon de dramo en Esperanto. Oni devas antaŭe
+eksciti la interesiĝon de la tuta urbo, por ke al ĉiuj festoj de la
+kongreso venu grandega multo da gastoj ne-Esperantistoj;--per unu
+vorto, oni devas fari grandan _impreson_, kaj devigi la tutan mondon
+paroli pri la kongreso.
+
+2. En la kongreso oni devas paroli pri organizado de nia afero,
+reciproka helpo en la batalado, pri rimedoj de propagando, pri kreado
+de granda kaj utila literaturo, k.t.p.; sed _nenion_, absolute nenion
+oni devas paroli pri iaj _ŝanĝoj_ aŭ '_plibonigoj_!' Por ke nia
+lingvo atingu sian celon kaj ne disfalu kiel Volapük, ĝi devas
+resti por ni absolute _netuŝebla_, tiel same kiel ĉiu alia lingvo,
+en kiu nenia persono ja kuraĝas proponi iajn reformojn, kvankam ĉiu
+el tiuj lingvoj estas multe malpli perfekta ol nia.
+
+Nun al la demando pri Akademio. Jam tre longe mi pensas pri aranĝo
+de ia konstanta 'Centra Komitato' kiu prezentus per si la plej altan
+aŭtoritaton en nia afero kaj kiu sola havus la rajton solvadi ĉiujn
+dubojn kiuj aperas en nia afero. Sed tia komitato devos decidadi nur
+pri demandoj _dubaj_; fari iajn _ŝanĝojn_ en la lingvo la komitato
+_ne_ havos la rajton. Kun la aranĝo de tia Centra Komitato oni devas
+esti tre singarda, por ne fari ian danĝeran paŝon; tial mi nun publike
+ankoraŭ nenion parolas pri tio ĉi, sed mi konsiliĝados pri ĝi private
+kun diversaj amikoj. Kiam la plano post matura pripenso montriĝos bona,
+tiam mi publike proponos al la Esperantistoj efektivigi tiun planon.
+
+Sed ĉu Centra Komitato estos fondita aŭ ne--tiu ĉi demando tute ne
+devas maltrankviligi niajn amikojn. Ĉiaj paroloj pri reformoj aŭ
+plibonigoj tute ne devas Vin maltrankviligi, ĉar ili havas nenian
+celon nek estontecon. Ĉu centra komitato estos fondita aŭ ne--unu
+principo staras kaj devas stari tute forte, kaj la tuta mondo
+Esperantista en la nuna tempo komprenas ĝin tre bone kaj certe
+batalos unuanime kontraŭ ĉiu ektuŝo de tiu principo; tiu ĉi
+principo estas: _Simile al ĉiu alia lingvo Esperanto devas esti
+rigardata kiel lingvo_ formita _kaj_ netuŝebla.
+Paroli pri iaj plibonigoj (se ili estos efektive necesaj) ni povos
+nur tiam kiam nia lingvo estos jam _oficiale akceptita_ de la tuta
+mondo. _Ĝis_ tiu tempo la netuŝebleco de la lingvo estas la _plej
+fundamenta_ kondiĉo por nia progresado.
+
+Mi parolas tion ĉi ne kiel _aŭtoro_ de la lingvo, sed kiel _simpla
+esperantisto_, kiu ne deziras ke nia afero disfalu kiel la afero de
+Volapük. Kiel aŭtoro de la lingvo, mi pli ol ĉiu alia volus ke ĝi
+estu kiel eble plej perfekta; por _mi_ la reteniĝado de plibonigoj
+estas pli malfacila ol por ĉiu alia; kaj mi eĉ konfesas ke kelkajn
+fojojn mi jam estis preta proponi al la Esperantistoj kelkajn
+malgrandajn plibonigojn, sed ĝustatempe mi ekmemoradis pri la granda
+danĝereco de tia paŝo kaj mi forĵetadis mian intencon.
+
+Mia opinio ne estas sekreta. Se Vi deziras, Vi povas publikigi mian
+leteron.
+

+
+Antaŭ ĉio, mi deziras tre danki publike nian karan Majstron.
+Konsentante konigi sian opinion ne nur pri Kongreso kaj Akademio sed
+ankoraŭ pri la "reformoj" de Esperanto, li certe grandege utilis al
+nia afero. Poste mi deziras, ĉar kelkaj Esperantistoj neĝuste
+komprenis miajn intencojn, publike certigi ke, proponante kunvenon de
+Kongreso kaj priparoladon pri Akademio, mi[1] nur celis prepari kaj
+naski la rimedojn por kontraŭbatali efike la danĝerojn kiuj nune
+minacas nian aferon. Mi esperis ke de la Kongreso devenus
+ia aŭtoritato (ĉu ekzistas ia pli dezirinda ol tiu de la genia
+kreinto de Esperanto?), ia aŭtoritato kiu povus _precipe_ gardi
+kaj konservi nedifektita, for de ĉia ajn "plibonigo," nian karan
+lingvon kaj, tiele, ĝin konduki al la triumfo.
+
+Tial mi estas tre feliĉa ĉar Dro. Zamenhof tiel lertege difinis la
+programon kiun plenumos tiu organizaĵo kaj ĉar li tiel energie
+protestis kontraŭ la rolo _reformada_ kiun kelkaj Esperantistoj
+deziris altrudi al ĝi. De nun do ne plu estas necese disputadi pri
+Akademio: ni konfideme atendu la tagon kiam ĝin efektivigos Dro.
+Zamenhof. Kaj, ĝis tiu tago, ni unuanime konsideru la aŭtoron de
+Esperanto kiel _nian solan aŭtoritaton_: ni petu pri liaj konsiloj
+por solvi niajn dubojn kaj _ni uzu neniun novan vorton ne aprobitan
+de li_.
+
+La energia letero de Dro. Zamenhof mirinde forigos ĉiun mallumon,
+ĉiun dubon kaj montros al la Esperantistoj la erarigan kaj
+allogantan vojon de la malsukceso sed ankaŭ tiun de la triumfo.
+
+Ĉiuj Esperantistoj, Esperantistaj grupoj kaj ĵurnaloj nun densiĝu
+ĉirkaŭ nia kara Majstro, ili tre konvinkiĝu pri la vereco de liaj
+paroloj kaj neniam forgesu ke _nur per la unueco de la lingvo kaj la
+unuiĝo de la koroj ni ricevos la venkon_!
+

+Kompreneble tiuj ĉi plene sufiĉas por ke akcentoj estu forigitaj.
+Tiu ĉi gazeto eble devos per maŝinkompostado presiĝi. Tamen ni
+scios kion fari kiam tiu ĉi tempo alvenos. Se iaj el la proponitaj
+anstataŭaĵoj ne plaĉas al la Angla okulo, ni ĉiam memoru ke aliaj

+Nun estis ne malproksime de tiu ĉi loko kastelo nomita Duba Kastelo,
+kies posedanto estis Giganto Malespero, kaj estis sur lia bieno ke
+ili nun dormis; tial li, levigante sin en la frua mateno, kaj
+promenante sur siaj kampoj, kaptis Kristanon kaj Esperemon dormantajn
+sur siaj teroj. Tiam, per timiga kaj malamika voĉo li ordonis ke ili
+vekiĝu, kaj demandis ilin de kie ili venis, kaj kion ili faris sur

+La vivo, kiun ni nun vivas estas mizera. Miaparte, mi ne scias, ĉu
+estas pli bone vivi tiamaniere, aŭ morti tuj. Mia animo elektas
+sufokiĝon plivole ol vivon. Kaj la tombo estas pli senĝena por mi
+ol tiu ĉi kelmalliberejo! Ĉu ni devas esti konsilataj de la
+Giganto?
+
+Esperemo.--Ja, nia nuna stato estas terura, kaj morto estus pli
+bonvena al mi ol ĉiam tiele resti. Sed ankoraŭ ni konsideru, la
+Sinjoro de la lando al kiu ni iras estas dirinta. "Ci ne devas fari
+mortigon"--ne, ne al alia homo; multe pli, do, ni estas malpermesitaj
+preni la konsilon de la Giganto mortigi nin mem. Cetere, li kiu
+mortigas alian nur faras mortigon sur lian korpon, sed kiam oni

+CORRESPONDENCE NOTES.
+
+
+Several enquirers have written for information as to the method of
+dividing the words in Esperanto. No rule seems to exist. The usual
+custom is to divide them according to their pronunciation, and not
+etymologically. Take the word _Krajonon_ for example. When split up
+into syllables, this reads kra-jo-non, and is pronounced
+krah-yoh-nohn.
+

+F.G.R. of Nottingham is a most energetic supporter of our Cause, for,
+in addition to lecturing on Esperanto, he has carefully studied the
+vocabulary in the Text-book, comparing the two parts. As a result
+of this examination he has found many items which are of general
+interest. On page 133 _Rent_ is given as _Rento_, whereas on page 154
+_Lui_ is given as meaning _to rent_. This is quite correct, for, in
+the first instance, _rent_ is _income_, rent roll; in the latter
+case, of course, it signifies _hire_. "One word, one meaning," is an
+Esperanto maxim. The word _Makleristo_ also presented difficulty, as
+the simple verb _Makleri_ is not given. It means _to do the business
+of a broker_. Hence _Makleristo_ is _a broker_.
+

+I must thank the many friends who have kindly written pointing out
+Press errors in The Esperantist. While regretting that it is
+impossible to eliminate these altogether, a monthly errata list of
+the preceding Gazette is not necessary, unless the errors be of real
+consequence. I must, however, in justice to the authors, call
+attention to the following unaccountable slips in previous numbers.
+On page 43 the saying of Napoleon was incorrectly given as
+_Milcentjaroj vin rigardas_. It should, of course, have been
+_Kvardek centjaroj_. Also Mr. Motteau calls attention to the
+following errata in _La Ventego_. Page 21, Scene 2, line 4, should
+read _Ĉiel' malbonodoran peĉon vomi_, and the last line but three
+on page 40 should read _Privilegio ĉian li posedis_.

+Dear Sir,--I was much interested to see, in the January
+_Gazette_, a short article by Esperantisto 8105 on the Esperanto
+rendering of the preposition "of," and I am sure that many of us
+found the information therein very useful. The gifted author of our
+language has told us that "_ĉiu prepozicio havas difinitan kaj
+konstantan signifon_"; it is of the utmost importance, therefore,
+that we should endeavour to find out what prepositions in our
+national languages correspond with those he has selected. With this
+object I hope from time to time, as the Editor may permit, to give
+lists of sentences, illustrating curious usages, not only of
+prepositions, but also of other words which offer difficulty to
+English-speaking peoples.

+aŭ en la Esperantaj Gazetoj, aŭ en la korespondado pri la utileco
+kaj facileco de la lingvo Esperanto en aliaj ĵurnaloj, pri la
+instruado de ĝi al geknaboj, kiuj nur lernis siajn patrujajn
+lingvojn. Certe mi ofte ricevis poŝtkartojn de Francaj knaboj, kiuj
+diras ke ili eklernas Esperanton, kaj kolektas ilustritajn

+Esperanto estas la plej viva kaj plej sana el ĉiuj lingvoj, ĉar ĝi
+ne naskiĝis infaneto, sed maturaĝa, kaj ili ŝanĝiĝis kaj
+maljuniĝis.

+Bone estus memori, ke ni estas la idoj de la estinteco, sed pli bone
+ke ni estas la patroj de la estonteco, kaj Esperanto ne estas nur
+praktika lingvo por hodiaŭ sed ĝi alrigardas la estontan
+progresadon de la homaro, kaj povas konigi nin kun ĉiuj alilanduloj,
+kiujn ni nomas, sed sen ia kompreno de la vorto, niaj _fratoj_.

+Vere signifa letero! Mi bone memoras ke, estante en Havro, mi
+renkontis du belajn infanetojn, kiuj bone parolis Esperanton, kiun
+zorge instruis je ili la gepatroj. Kaj ŝajne infanoj tre amas
+Esperanton. Certe en Anglujo, mi ĉiam observis, ke la plej
+interosituloj estas ofte geknaboj. Eble la propono, ke ili eklernu
+tian novan lingvon, enhavas iom da novaĵo, kaj tial estas precipe
+interesa. Sed ne estas dubeble, ke la studio de Esperanto plene
+taŭgas por la instruado de infanoj, ĉar ĝi estas lingvo facila,
+senescepta, kaj logika, kaj, pli ol ĉia, la lernantoj de Esperanto
+devas _pripensi_, ne nur _memori_.
+

+PRI SCIENCAJ AFEROJ.

+Provoj estos farintaj de Doktoro de Forest por plirapidigi la
+elsendon de signaloj. Antaŭ malmultaj tagoj li sukcese signalis
+po tridek vortoj dum minuto, kaj li kredas ke li povos signali po
+kvindek vortoj dum minuto, per sia sistemo kiu malsimilas al tiu
+de Signor Marconi. Membroj de la Poŝtoficejo kaj de la Mar- kaj
+Militafakoj ĉeestis ĉe tiuj ĉi provoj apud Holyhead.

+La elektra forigo de nebulo, pri kiu sukcesaj eksperimentoj jam estas
+faritaj, estos, kiam perfektigita, utilega sur la maro. Sir Oliver
+Lodge,[2] kiu laboras pri tiu ĉi afero kaj kiu ĝis nun sukcesis,
+komencos eksperimentojn sur la rivero Mersey. Li starigos sur ĉia
+bordo mastojn, tiuj je unu flanko havos flamojn pozitive ŝarĝitajn,
+kaj je la alia, havos malpozitivajn flamojn. Por fari tiujn ĉi
+provojn, oni devas uzi fluon de pli ol 100,000 voltoj. Oni esperas
+ke, per tiu ĉi ilo, oni povos klarigi la riveron je nebuloj.

+Antaŭ ne longe Sinjoro Curie, paroladante en Parizo pri Radiumo,
+montris ke ne estas eble ŝarĝi elektroskopon kiam radiumo
+apudestas. Por tiun ĉi efektivigi oni devis kovri la radiumo per
+dika kovrilo de plombo, kaj ĝin porti al la malproksima fino de
+la ĉambro. Tiam, kiam la elektroskopo estis ŝarĝita, ĝi tuj
+disŝarĝiĝos kiam la radiumo estas apudportita.

+fondi branĉbankon).

+Pripensinte la aferon, la oficisto diris: "post dek tagoj mi estos

+viajn servojn." Tiam li vokis alian oficiston, al kiu li metis la
