Uit +het kleine stadje, dat Athene in hun tijd nog was, en dat men er +dertig of veertig jaren geleden ook nog zag, is thans een stad +geworden, die waardig haar plaats inneemt onder de europeesche +hoofdsteden. De veiligheid is er overal in het land volkomen. De +voornaamste middelpunten en de plaatsen waar men opgravingen doet, +zijn met Athene verbonden door spoorwegen of door een net van goede +rijwegen. + +Zoowel uit Athene als uit Patras bereikt men snel Olympia, Corinthe, +Mycene, Argos, Nauplia, Tripolitza en Kalamata: Thebe, Chaeronea, +Livadia en Chalkis hebben eveneens hun spoorwegen. Maar zulke moeilijke +wegen, die men evenwel zonder nadeelige gevolgen aflegt, dank zij der +behendigheid van de muilezels, zijn inderdaad uitzonderingen. En meestal behoeft +men slechts even zich buiten de poorten van een stad te begeven, om +dadelijk zich te gevoelen te midden van de eenzaamheid der bergen of +van de wijde vlakte. + +Op menige plek komt de geur van maagdelijken grond u tegen. In de voornaamste plaatsen slaapt en eet +men niet al te slecht. Patras, Nauplia, Delphi, Olympia hebben zelfs +uitstekende hotels. In de gehuchten en de afgelegen dorpen herbergt +de aanzienlijkste burger de doortrekkende vreemdelingen. Ook de op +de hoogten gelegen kloosters weten reizigers goed te ontvangen; +de monniken van Megaspileon en die uit de Meteorenkloosters zijn +beleefde en zeer milde gastheeren. Hoogerop in het gebergte krijgt men +een gul onthaal bij de herders, waar nog een aartsvaderlijke eenvoud +heerscht. Zij slachten ter eere van den reiziger het traditioneele +gemeste kalf, dat aan het spit gebraden wordt en des avonds na het +homerische onthaal, als allen in een kring rondom een groot vlammend +vuur zijn uitgestrekt, heffen ze liederen aan, herderszangen, populaire +melodieën en oude volkswijzen. + +Het Griekenland van de herders en de bergbewoners is waard, beter +bekend te worden, zooals ook dat der zeelieden de moeite van het +bekijken loont. Dat Griekenland wordt door de zee en de bergen van de +beschaving afgehouden, en in de afgelegen gedeelten der bergstreken, +zoowel als aan de weinig bezochte kusten moet men het echte nationale +leven zoeken. Daar hebben de steeds openstaande woningen nog een geur +van de oudheid over, en men begroet er den vreemdeling met den naam van +"broeder", adelphé. Dat schilderachtige Griekenland van de herders is +door een kunstenaar uit Genève, den knappen photograaf Fred. Boissonas, +een vurig bewonderaar van Hellas, onder handen genomen en hij heeft +dat meer bekend willen maken naast het artistieke Griekenland in een +werk, dat eerlang zal verschijnen, een prachteditie, met den titel: +"In Griekenland". Er zullen slechts een bepaald getal exemplaren voor +inteekenaren verschijnen en de prijs is 500 francs. + +Honderd-veertig heliogravures zullen het werk luister bijzetten, +waaronder een groot aantal buiten den tekst, De heer Daniel Baud-Bovy, +de directeur van het Museum te Genève, die den heer Boissonas op +zijn reis heeft vergezeld, heeft het verhalende en beschrijvende +gedeelte voor zijn rekening genomen. Onlangs heeft Gustave Fougères, een professor aan de +Sorbonne, in eene redevoering op die bijzonderheden gewezen en ze aldus +verklaard: "De schilders uit de westersche landen zijn te zeer gewend +aan de flauwe omtrekken en het wazige licht der westersche landen, +en ze vinden, dat er in het grieksche landschap te veel teekening is +en niet genoeg overgang van tinten". + +Maar juist in dien eenvoud der lijnen ligt een der grootste +bekoorlijkheden van die onvergelijkelijke natuur; en verder schuilt +die in de duidelijkheid en vastheid der lijnen van het reliëf. In het licht der ondergaande zon worden +de hooge toppen gebaad in een parelmoeren schijn, en de heele natuur +neemt een purperen gloed aan, met goud afgewisseld en zachtbruin, +als was er een regen van amethysten neergedaald. + +Er komen heldere nachten voor met een sterrenhemel, die vooral +in Attica, het overal licht maakt als op den dag. Er is daar telkens een geheel, dat op zichzelf staat, want +de natuur is in Griekenland net als de menschenstammen naar bepaalde +gebieden ingedeeld. Als de Messeniër van de hoogte zijner bergen +neerziet op zijn vlakte, die in een krans van bergen is ingesloten, +krijgt hij van zijn land een totaalindruk en hij overziet het in zijn +geheel; vanaf den Mistra omvat de blik van den Spartaan het gansche +dal der Eurotas; van de vesting Argos kan de bewoner van het landschap +Argos zijn vaderstreek aanschouwen, en overal is het iets dergelijks. + +Het tooneel, dat zich aan de blikken van den beschouwer voordoet, +is nergens hetzelfde.
