+SOBRE O ESTADO ACTUAL DA LITTERATURA PORTUGUEZA

+Força-me a consciencia a erguer a voz:
+
+Estamos n'uma terra em que a verdade para ser ouvida precisa trazer a fórma
+do escandalo. A não vir d'este modo é uma coisa inintelligivel, obscura.
+Tanto melhor para quem aspira a ser entendido sómente por aquelles que se
+pagam de sua obscuridade pela firmeza da consciencia, e integridade de
+caracter.
+
+A grande individualidade, resultado dos progressos d'este seculo, vae
+tornando impossiveis todas as supremacias, tanto na religião, como no
+estado, como na arte. É para onde confluem todos os esforços, todas as
+luctas; é o mobil de acção na Europa moderna.
+
+As realezas litterarias foram as primeiras que acabaram, porque se
+comprehendeu de prompto, que não era o modêlo academico, mas o sentimento
+puro, que nos havia elevar á perfeição, dar-nos a percepção immediata das
+fórmas que traduzem o bello na vida. Cada um, em vez de ir com os olhos nas
+pégadas do mestre, procurou desenvolver em si esse sentimento ingenito; é
+em vez de arrancarem curiosidades hybridas de sua phantasia, souberam
+descobrir como a eternidade se allia com as creações humanas. Passo dado
+pela evolução romantica.
+
+Uma das phases mais brilhantes da vida de Goëthe, depois de se ter
+encarnado no Fausto e contemplado o ideal sereno do mundo antigo, as fórmas
+encantadoras de Helena, o typo supremo do bello; depois de ter representado
+as luctas e revoluções com que o christianismo abalou a alma humana, na
+sublime creação da _Noiva de Coryntho_, o vulto do pensador e poeta realisa
+em si a mesma perfeição plastica, sente que se transfigura, a fronte
+envolve-se em uma magestade olympica. É justamente n'este ponto que elle
+sente em si uma realeza; a edade avança, a purpura está quasi a cahir-lhe
+dos hombros, substituida pelo sudario. Então lança os olhos pela mocidade
+da Allemanha, á busca do eleito. Vem de toda a parte consultar o vidente
+sentado no marco miliario da vida; o que elle diz grava-se como uma
+sentença, é o vaticinio em que dá a apotheose ou a obscuridade. Apesar da
+intuição e sciencia do bello, que é nos seus resultados similhante ao
+sentimento da justiça, quantas vezes não foi o semideus da arte injusto nas
+suas apreciações? Novalis, a alma mystica da Allemanha, a melancholia das
+elevações intimas que caracterisa a nacionalidade de Tauler, Hans Sachs,
+Ruysbroek, não foi avaliado por Goëthe. O pagão não comprehendera os
+devaneios crepusculares, os anceios vagos de uma alma, que aspirara o
+perfume da rosa mystica do christianismo. Goëthe foi uma vez injusto na sua
+vida, quando despresou o pobre e poeta Novalis.
+
+Que differença entre Goëthe e o sr. Castilho? a mesma que dá um zero por
+denominador. Comtudo, entre nós, como se vê pelas suas obras, ou talvez por
+esta infancia perpetua que lhe encontram os seus admiradores, que é
+essencialmente imitadora, procura tambem no ultimo quartel da vida
+acclamar-se o arbitro supremo da litteratura, e cobrir com os retalhos da
+sua purpura as chagas e aleijões dos aulicos, decretando-lhes a admiração
+publica, e impondo-os á posteridade. Cabia aqui, para todos, o bom dito de
+Voltaire a proposito da Epistola de J. B. Rousseau _Á Posteridade_. Se
+estas coisas fossem feitas por leviandade natural da senectude, ao menos
+tinhamos a certeza de que lá estavam as bemaventuranças que dariam por
+premio o reino do céo. O apparecimento de um livro é uma das melhores
+tertulias para o sr. Castilho; apparece logo como estes homens que vão a
+todos os enterros.
+
+Esta phrase usual de _republica das lettras_ significa mais do que se
+pensa; a intelligencia não reconhece magestades, nem hierarchias, vive da
+egualdade plena, e tanto, que é este o dom maravilhoso da razão, a
+uniformidade de processos para uma egualdade de resultados--a verdade. A
+Carta do sr. Anthero do Quental colloca na sua verdadeira altura o que
+significam estas insinuações perfidas contra a eschola de Coimbra[1], as
+attençoes equivocas, e a animação clandestina aos adeptos que lhe vão na
+pista apodando com insolencias e banalidades todo o impulso dado para
+sahirmos das superfetações mesquinhas a que entre nós se chama arte. A
+carta versa sobre o bom senso e o bom gosto, e é pela carencia d'estes dons
+que se adquire o principado da lyra.
+
+Ao lerem-se as paginas d'esse protesto, que ha de vir a ser um capitulo da
+historia da litteratura contemporanea, sente-se vibrar em cada palavra um
+sentimento illimitado de justiça, como a sabem sentir os corações novos, ou
+os homens que teem soffrido, victimas da perversidade dos outros. Este
+mesmo sentimento de justiça, que é sempre a principal inspiração da poesia
+do sr. Anthero do Quental, traduzida na sua fórma mais austera do _dever_,
+dá-lhe um vigor logico á dicção; dotado das qualidades que fazem admiravel
+um estylista, imaginação e uma intuição generalisadora, é n'esta carta que
+vemos melhor caracterisado o seu genio. Tem a franqueza de linguagem, o
+desenfado de quem se fia na sua dialectica firme, a penetração que segue um
+principio até ás mais remotas conclusões. Alma rectissima de Proudhon,
+comprehensão e tenacidade de Feuerbak, o sr. Anthero do Quental obedece á
+fatalidade de sua natureza. Tem todos os dotes para um terrivel
+pamphletario. Elle serve-se da sua obscuridade e despreocupação litteraria
+para que este protesto não seja um resentimento, mas lhe dê direito a
+julgar desassombradamente, com frieza e boa fé. N'esta carta admiravel ha
+dois elementos distinctos que o auctor soube combinar de uma maneira
+condigna do talento; é a seriedade com que discute as idéas, o lyrismo com
+que se apossa dellas, e o ridiculo que derrama sobre as ninharias das
+nullidades altivas.
+
+Cumpre fazer um reparo. O publico julgará por certo um desacato, vir um
+homem, affrontando todas as conveniencias, o respeito á velhice, a
+admiração sancionada por todos, e demonstrar a exiguidade do sr. Castilho.
+Todos nós sabemos o que particularmente se pensa e se diz do auctor da
+_Joven Lilia_, como caracter e como artista, mas uns diante dos outros não
+se atrevem, talvez por servilismo, a proclamar a verdade crua. O sr.
+Castilho assiste de dia para dia ao esphacelamento do seu caracter; indole
+viperina, reservado, como o rancor de cego, bifronte como o deus antigo
+cujos fastos ainda commemora, não tem, não tem direito a esta sagração que
+vae sanctificando a edade e o trabalho.
+
+Elle apparece-nos como Chiron ensinando o mysterio da força aos que o
+cercam, mas é n'isto que está o attentado á arte, ensinando uma rotina
+arcadica, palavrosa, nulla de idéas, de sentimentos falsos, que já se nota
+na mocidade, que o admira. Sobre tudo a má fé, é o que mais depressa se
+communica; um critico chama ingrato a um auctor, que preoccupado com o seu
+trabalho não soube, nem teve tempo para ir agradecer-lhe as inepcias; e
+promette verberal-o, alludindo fóra de proposito á sua nebulosidade. Cada
+vez me convenço mais do celebre dito de Pope, que se pode applicar á
+maioria dos que escrevem: «Que um mau escriptor é sempre um mau homem.»
+
+Um dos argumentos do auctor das _Cartas de Ecco e Narciso_, contra este
+movimento e esforço para dar ideal á poesia, é o falar da _plastica_ e da
+_Esthetica_ como coisas futeis, e tanto, que os grandes poetas antigos não
+as conheceram. Homero, Dante, Virgilio, todos os genios de todos os tempos
+não sabiam o que era _Esthetica_? Seguramente o sr. Castilho acostumado a
+rimar palavras e ensacar periodos em arrendondadas periphrases, tomou só a
+palavra _Esthetica_, creada por W. Hamilton (_Lectures on metaphysics, t.
+I_) por que não se quiz dar ao trabalho de comprehender o que esta
+designação contém. Ha na natureza do homem o poder de determinar a
+generalidade das coisas, de descobrir n'ellas o ponto em que a vontade de
+todos se harmonisa, a força mysteriosa de harmonisar o mundo, o sentimento
+do bello, o ideal; mas a este dom sublime anda tambem adjunto o poder de
+dar fórma, trazer á realidade da vida os sentimentos mais intimos--é a
+arte. É a união d'estas duas forças que constitue verdadeiramente o genio;
+é o que tem feito a apotheose dos poetas eternos. Ora, sr. Castilho, ao
+estudo e contemplação objectiva de todos estes factos do nosso espirito, á
+sua reducção a sciencia é que se chama _Esthetica_, do mesmo modo que as
+cathegorias do raciocinio formam a Logica. Antes de Aristoteles ter
+determinado as leis syllogisticas, ninguem tinha pensado, segundo o modo de
+vêr do sr. Castilho, ou pensava-se bem sem ellas. O sr. Castilho não é bom
+Homero, mas dormita sempre embalado ao canto das cigarras debaixo da olaia,
+e não sabe o que é o homem, nem procura saber a razão do movimento da sua
+epoca.
+
+Mas para que serve a _Esthetica_?
+
+É facil de ver. O homem obrando primeiramente por impulsos instinctivos,
+tende continuamente a emancipar-se d'essa fatalidade tornando todos os seus
+actos do dominio da consciencia; as sciencias nascem d'este mesmo esforço
+incessante; não chegam a constituir-se antes de uma longa observação de
+factos successivos em que se basêem. A _Esthetica_ é a consciencia do
+sentimento do bello; mas como o sentimento do bello é a communicação
+espiritual do homem com o mundo, vem a _Esthetica_ a ser a synthese de
+todas as outras sciencias que procuram as propriedades e qualidades das
+coisas materiaes. E o ideal? É a passagem da realidade natural para a
+realidade artistica.
+
+Sobre tudo uma das primeiras condições da arte é a verdade; e a verdade
+nunca se encontra aonde não ha caracter. A arte sem a verdade dá as
+ampliações rhetoricas, insuffladas de synongmos, a que entre nós se chama
+estylo classico, á Frei Luiz de Sousa, em que se relê depois de lêr, e se
+torna a lêr, em que se voltam de mil maneiras as formas arredondadas, em
+que não ha um pensamento, e em que prima o sr. Castilho. E esta sua prosa é
+muito portugueza na dicção; portugueza de dois seculos atraz, quinhentista
+pela fórma intertelada e urbana, seiscentista pelo requinte, e sobre tudo
+dissonante para quem conhece a verdadeira eurythmia da lingua, pela mistura
+insólita e desnatural da gravidade academica com as locuções desenfadadas e
+legitimas do nosso povo.
+
+Ainda ha por ahi quem pensa que uma lingua não progride com as necessidades
+intellectuaes ou materiaes de um povo. Não admira, porque entre nós as
+necessidades intellectuaes são nullas, e o sr. Castilho é o primeiro a
+reconhecel-o, quando se enfaixa nos Sousas e Lucenas e decreta _urbi et
+orbi_ as gallanices do estylo. Nos _Quadros Historicos_, obra tão falada e
+gostada, abundam paginas infindas, safaras de idéas, seccantes pelas
+extorsões dos elementos da oração, mas portuguezas de lei. Citámos um
+livro, justamente aquelle em que o sr. Castilho levantou um protesto contra
+a eschola romantica de Victor Hugo; n'aquelle prologo diz heresias
+inauditas contra o ideal; mas sua excellencia veio como os falsos
+prophetas, queria excommungar, e as palavras do esconjuro
+converteram-se-lhe em bençãos. De tudo o que o auctor da Ode arcadica a D.
+João VI tem escripto até ás traducções paraphrasticas de Ovidio, se alguma
+cousa ha que se lêa, é imitação da escola romantica: tal é o drama
+_Camões_. As obras do sr. Castilho tem o valor economico da raridade. É o
+que faz com que se fale nos _Quadros Historicos_, porque poucos os tem
+visto; lidos, e conhecida a intenção do auctor, occupam um logar somenos
+ainda abaixo do que é mediocre. O sr. Alexandre Herculano emprehendeu a
+_Historia de Portugal_ com este espirito severo da escola analysta de
+Guizot e Macauley; tinha de sacrificar, de nos expropriar, por assim dizer,
+a bem da verdade, das nossas lendas e tradições nacionaes, com que os
+nossos Herodotos haviam bordado a historia dos primeiros tempos. Era
+preciso que outra mão fosse respigando na seara cortada, como Rutth. Só um
+poeta, com a sua vara magica, poderia fazer apparecer os thesouros da
+imaginação. O sr. Castilho votou-se á empreza. Mas como? Falto de
+imaginação lançou-se a romancear a capricho aquellas lendas que já estavam
+dramatisadas na ingenuidade da chronica pelos bons Froissarts. Assim
+falsificou-lhes o espirito, dando-se-nos como contemporaneo d'ellas. É uma
+atrocidade imperdoavel, tanto maior, quanto n'este tempo já tinha
+apparecido o livro monumental de Jacob Grimm sobre as _Tradições allemãs_,
+em que o moderno Du Cange, depois de haver consumido dez annos de vida
+n'esse trabalho, ensina como se restauram estas preciosidades. As grandes
+descobertas são para todos.
+
+Já nos _Quadros_ se nota em sua excellencia, um desejo de imitar aquella
+esperteza de Chartterton que inventou o monge Rowley, a intuição de
+Macfferson inventando Ossian, ou o ardil de Psalmanazar que imaginou um
+outro Japão. Escrevendo o _Auto da boa Estreia_ deu-se por muito feliz em
+enganar o consciencioso bibliographo José Maria da Costa e Silva no seu
+_Ensaio bibliographico critico_.
+
+A arte não é isto! a mentira é uma perversidade de morte, principalmente no
+que toca ao sentimento, que não discute, mas se deixa impressionar sómente.
+Não é assim que se é pontifice das letras.
+
+Digamos a verdade toda. O sr. Castilho deve a sua celebridade á
+infelicidade de ser cego. O que se espera de um cego? Apenas habilidade. É
+uma celebridade triste porque tem origem na compaixão, e a compaixão
+fatiga-se. A primeira vez que o seu nome foi citado em um trabalho
+litterario em Paris, no _Parnaso Luzitano_, era d'esta circumstancia que
+tirava os motivos da admiração o sabio auctor d'aquelle esboço de historia
+litteraria. Foi tambem a inspiração de Victor Hugo em um pequeno distico,
+quando retribuiu com a immortalidade as palavras injustas contra a _Notre
+Dome_.
+
+O publico tem direito a que lhe respeitem uma celebridade que fez. É de
+razão. Mas como se fez esta celebridade? Do mesmo modo que os insectos
+formaram a enorme cordilheira dos Andes, como a defecação dos passaros, que
+emigram, forma ilhas no meio do mar. Com o tempo. A primeira impressão que
+as obras d'este auctor causaram, quando appareceram, foi boa; era preciso
+animar a formação da litteratura. Lia-se apenas _O Feliz Independente_.
+
+Esta impressão tem-se transmittido tradicionalmente, porque a raridade das
+edições, que ha um anno se reproduzem, não deixou assignar-lhe ainda o seu
+valor actual. A reputação do sr. Castilho acaba com a sua vida; é a luz que
+se apaga comsigo; nenhum dos seus livros vae á posteridade, porque a
+posteridade, sempre impassivel, aceita sómente o que exerceu uma influencia
+sobre uma epoca. Hoje fala-se ainda nas _Epistolae Obscurorum Virorum_, do
+cavalleiro de Hutten, porque foi o primeiro passo para a secularisação das
+letras antes da Reforma. Depois da morte do auctor da _Primavera_,
+conclue-se evidentemente que, nem mais um volume se tornará a imprimir.
+
+É um phenomeno curioso, mas que se dá frequentes vezes, quando o auctor
+gosa de uma aura acima do que merece. O mesmo se deu com Chapellain, auctor
+de uma Pucelle, com Palissot, Scarron, Saint-Evremont, e quejandos.
+
+Custa-nos bastante ter de arcar com preconceitos e superstições do publico;
+mas a verdade é mais imperiosa, não se cala ante as _tosquias_ dos
+fetiches; e que se póde esperar do Memnide Eginense, _lentas in umbra_,
+entre as ovelhas da sua arcadia, senão isso?
+
+É em nome da verdade e da justiça que levanto por um instante a mão da
+consciencia, para assignar-me contra as theocracias litterarias.
+
