Ahi se achavam<br> +Em breve reúnidos todos quatro,<br> +Quando em meio era o dia do seu giro:<br> +Almo prazer em todos respirava,<br> +Deu-se a voz da partida, eil-os s'embarcam.<br> +<br> + Em sujo batel da roça,<br> + De cargas todo tomado,<br> + Entraram os quatro amigos<br> + Qual em pensar mais ousado:<br> + Cada um já assentado<br> + Contemplava o borborinho<br> + Que se fazia sentir<br> + No tão pequeno barquinho.<br> +<br> + De vinte quatro pessôas<br> + Já elle tomado estava;<br> + Mulheres, homens e cargas<br> + Tudo mal se acommodava:<br> + Entretanto, a tudo dava<br> + Maior graça, mais acção,<br> + Os ditos que proferia<br> + Do tal barquinho o patrão.<br> +<br> + Este, assentado na pôppa,<br> + Tomando do leme conta,<br> + Para seguir a viagem<br> + Bem galhardo já se aprompta:<br> + A prôa do barco aponta<br> + Para o sitio desejado;<br> + Soltam-se as vélas e vê-se<br> + Já o ferro levantando...<br> +<br> + O vento a favôr<br> + Que então se agitava,<br> + No barco empregava<br> + Toda actividade,<br> + Que em breve a cidade<br> + Nos fez tão distante,<br> + Que olhar penetrante<br> + Não mais descobria.<br> +<br> + Na vasta bahia<br> + Então nos achámos,<br> + E a vista espraiámos<br> + Em seus arredores:<br> + Os bellos verdores<br> + Das ilhas formosas,<br> + Serras alterosas<br> + Fomos contemplando.<br> +<br> + Fomos desfructando<br> + Todo o panorama,<br> + Que assaz se darrama<br> + N'esta bella terra,<br> + Aonde se encerra<br> + Tanta poesia,<br> + De noite e de dia,<br> + Em todo o lugar...<br> +<br> + N'estes bellos contemplar<br> + Todos engolfados iam,<br> + Que nem ao menos sentiam<br> + Do sol os ardentes raios.<br> +<br> + Tal era o contentamento<br> + Que a todos dominava,<br> + Em tudo graça se achava,<br> + Tudo era riso e ventura.<br> +<br> + Esquesitos pensamentos<br> + Pelo patrão emittidos,<br> + Feriam mais os sentidos<br> + Da bella reunião.<br> +<br> + Pois ninguem mais desejava<br> + Do que nós, se divertir;<br> + Em todos, dôce sorrir<br> + Ineffabil se mostrava.<br> +<br> + Entanto o activo vento<br> + Mais e mais se redobrava,<br> + O barco quase voava<br> + Impellido pela força;<br> +<br> + Té que tanto foi crescendo<br> + E a tal ponto se elevou,<br> + Qu'em breve se rebentou<br> + Uma das duas escôtas.<br> +<br> + Aos gritos de--férra a véla--<br> + A risada foi geral,<br> + Fazendo-se mais cabal<br> + O nosso divertimento.<br> +<br> + E em taes brincos<br> + Nos engolfando,<br> + Fômos passando<br> + Toda a bahia.<br> +<br> + Em todos, prazer<br> + Se manifestava,<br> + Em todos reinava<br> + O contentamento,<br> +<br> + E em complemento<br> + A dôce alegria<br> + De todos se via<br> + No rosto expressar.<br> +<br> + De tantos enlêvos<br> + Foi o só motôr,<br> + O Baldeador<br> + Já tão desejado!<br> +<br> + E tudo já tendo<br> + Bem analisado,<br> + Conforme o ensejo<br> + Nos foi permittindo,<br> + De--terra--uma voz<br> + Se deu, e nós todos<br> + Do barco da roça<br> + Nos fômos saindo.<br> +<br> + Então avistámos,<br> + Mesmo á nossa frente,<br> + Um alto coqueiro<br> + Já envelhecido,<br> + O qual nome deu<br> + Ao porto, que achámos<br> + De curta extenção,<br> + Mas appetecido.<br> +<br> + Pequenas casinhas,<br> + Em numero breve,<br> + De tôsco trabalho,<br> + Sem ordem alguma,<br> + Postadas em fila<br> + Ao longo da praia...<br> + Do Coqueiro o porto<br> + Este é, em summa.<br> +<br> +E já em terra todos, espraiamos<br> +A vista ao derredor do porto ameno;<br> +Tudo n'elle animava, e assaz se via<br> +A Natureza em tudo derramada<br> +N'este sitio tão bello e pitoresco.<br> +Aqui, de uma janella se mostrava<br> +Como que a mêdo a púdica donzella;<br> +Ali, o ancião curvado de annos<br> +Desfructava do porto a vista bella;<br> +Estes, debaixo dos tamarinheiros,<br> +Que em frente ás casas ficam, junto á praia,<br> +Abrigados do sol, se distraiam<br> +C'os novos viajôres que saltavam....<br> +Oh! como é bello o habitar bem longe,<br> +Bem longe, das cidades grandiosas!<br> +Ali, a Natureza em toda a parte,<br> +Nos homens e animaes, na flôr, nas hervas,<br> +Nas casas, nos costumes dos seus povos;<br> +Aqui o luxo e o estridor dos carros<br> +D'esses grandes do mundo... e o labyrinto...<br> +Tudo é confusão, tudo é buliço....<br> +<br> + Oh! como é bello o habitar bem longe,<br> +Bem longe das cidades grandiosas!<br> +Desfructa-se do campo almos prazeres,<br> +No campo o home'em tudo s'extasia!...<br> +<br> + E ahi nós tendo<br> + Pago ao patrão,<br> + E as nossas malas<br> + Tendo na mão;<br> + Dôce espanção<br> + Dêmos á vista,<br> + Pois que no porto<br> + Nada contrista.<br> +<br> + A estrada fômos<br> + Depois tomando,<br> + Que em frente 'stava<br> + Se nos mostrando;<br> + Fomos caminhando...<br> + Por todo o passeio<br> + Tudo era alegria,<br> + Tudo era recreio.<br> +<br> + E a casa avistámos, emfim,<br> + Que pôz cabo á viagem comprida;<br> + N'ella, a simplicidade esculpida<br> + Nós achámos, no aspecto singelo.<br> +<br> + Isolada n'um campo, onde finda<br> + Mui custosa ladeira, escarpada,<br> + Sem abrigos ao vento, assentada<br> + Nós a vimos, e pois a saúdamos.<br> +<br> + Oh! então a alegria se fez<br> + Dignamente expressar em nós todos;<br> + O contento se via nos modos,<br> + Nas acções, nas palavras, nos rostos.<br> +<br> + Já da casa as pessôas se apinham,<br> + E contentes nos vêm receber;<br> + Seus olhares expressam prazer,<br> + Tudo é natureza e bom grado.<br> +<br> + A cancella transpuzémos<br> + E na casa nos achámos;<br> + Declinava o sol então,<br> + E á mesa nos sentámos,<br> +<br> + Pois da fome já em nós<br> + O effeito era sentido;<br> + Bem depressa devorámos<br> + O que então nos foi servido.<br> +<br> + E tudo acabado<br> + Deixamos a mesa;<br> + Fômos logo vêr<br> + Do sitio a belleza.<br> +<br> + Na casa, pois, frequencia limitada<br> +Nós tivemos, porque sómente o bosque,<br> +O caminho, de matos abastado,<br> +A si nos atraiam por um modo<br> +Bem custoso de assaz o expressarmos:<br> +Ahi, sob uma arvore frondosa,<br> +Qual é a do Brasil bella mangueira,<br> +A sombra desfructava-mos contentes<br> +A mais dôce emoção de almos favôres,<br> +Quaes os que a Natureza ha concedido<br> +A este nosso paiz de primavera!<br> +<br> + O regato que foge mansamente,<br> +Em seu curso contínuo, murmurando,<br> +Que após si as arêas e as pedrinhas<br> +Leva, no deslisar do seu caminho;<br> +O meigo sabiá, terno ao ouvido<br> +Quando a sua canção gorgêa alegre;<br> +O alvi-negro colleiro, cujo nome,<br> +Amplamente lhe expressa a apparencia;<br> +O serrador, passarinho, que n'um galho<br> +Sempre pulando, arremedar parece<br> +Da serra o exercicio na madeira;<br> +O veloz beija-flôr, esvoaçando,<br> +E no ar se retendo, p'ra d'est'arte<br> +Melhor fruir da flôr o doce succo;<br> +A leve mariquita, a borboleta,<br> +De lindissimas côres matizada,<br> +Que nos deleita a vista, e em nós desperta<br> +O poder vasto do Arbitro do Mundo....<br> +Tudo isto para nós era um portento,<br> +Tudo em nós era grande! e este espetac'lo<br> +Bem longe de encontrarmos nas cidades,<br> +Nós juntos contemplámos, enlevados,<br> +Bebendo a longos tragos gozos tantos,<br> +Quantos pódem fruir peitos amigos,<br> +Que unidos desde a infancia, se engolfavam<br> +Agora meditando n'estas obras<br> +Tão grandes, tão sublimes, da Natura:<br> +Dois peitos, que da idade dos errores<br> +Saíram, para entrar na dos pensares,<br> +Sempre juntos, e sempre alegres, dando<br> +Mais um culto á Amizade, a cujo throno<br> +De per si elles mesmos se elevaram,<br> +Quando dos annos no verdôr brincavam,<br> +Quando suas idéas similhantes<br> +Pouco longe avançavam dos limites<br> +Prescriptos a idades tão nascentes....<br> +<br> +--Era pequena arvore plantada,<br> +Por mão á experiencia pouco affeita,<br> +Para depois seus ramos alongando,<br> +Chegar ao crescimento precisado<br> +E offerecer o sazônado fructo:<br> +Essa arvore crescida é já bastante,<br> +E o fructo seu gozamol-o mutuamente.<br> +<br> + Assim meditando,<br> + Do dia primeiro<br> + Passamos o resto:<br> + E quão lisongeiro<br> + Nos foi tal deleite,<br> + O ar respirando<br> + Do bosque, tão puro!<br> + Até que escuro<br> + Tornando-se o dia,<br> + Não mais se podia<br> + Do Baldeador<br> + Os sitios notar.<br> +<br> + E então para casa nos fômos<br> + Muito prestes todos reunir,<br> + E ahi conversando, tivemos<br> + Varias coisas com que distrair.<br> +<br> + Referimos, por tanto, o que achámos,<br> + E o que vimos de mais agradavel;<br> + Para nós tudo era sublime,<br> + Tudo era bem admiravel.<br> +<br> + E parte da noite<br> + Assim nós passando,<br> + Depois a findamos<br> + O <i>solo</i> jogando;<br> +<br> + Pois fóra da côrte<br> + De noite, o passar<br> + É máo, não havendo<br> + Um bello luar.<br> +<br> + E foi justamente<br> + O que aconteceu;<br> + O jogo, por tanto,<br> + Logo appareceu.<br> +<br> + Alta era a noite quando repoisámos<br> +Os já bastante fatigados membros;<br> +E ainda assim achava-mos bem curto<br> +O espaço que tivemos n'esse dia<br> +Para vêr tudo, tudo apreciando;<br> +Pois a noite tomou-nos pressurosa<br> +Na nossa digressão tão animada,<br> +Tão cheia de elevados pensamentos!<br> +O dia desejava-mos que em breve<br> +Nos viesse fazer deixar os leitos:<br> +E a estes desejos, que do peito eram,<br> +Fazia-mos juntar os promenores<br> +Dos passeios que, ao nascer d'alva,<br> +Havia-mos de dar; pois que nós ambos<br> +Idéas possuindo assaz ardentes,<br> +Parecia-nos pouco tudo quanto<br> +Á nossa vista se nos amostrasse!<br> +<br> + Mas ah! que em face de desejos tantos<br> +Tivemos de ceder bem humilhados,<br> +Não mais cuidando da manhã seguinte<br> +Nos passeios que havia-mos pensado!<br> +Oh! que a noite tornou-se bem espessa!<br> +O trovão foi ouvido.... e após momentos<br> +Manifestou-se a chuva em abundancia!...<br> +Tudo foi instantaneo; incontinente<br> +A tristeza se fez igual em todos,<br> +Grande parte cabendo aos jovens Bardos<br> +Que infructifero viam o passeio.<br> +A chuva foi annuncio de má nova:<br> +A chuva distruiu quantos projectos<br> +Se tinham feito do passeio ao campo.<br> +E ambos de tristura possuidos,<br> +A nada atingiam mais, senão o como<br> +Na roça passariam hinvernados.<br> +Todos, n'estes e n'outros pensamentos<br> +Pouco e pouco nos fômos entregando<br> +Ao mole somno, a que emfim cedemos<br> +Da chuva ouvindo o susurrar monotono.<br> +<br> + O repoisar foi breve, que avançada<br> +Já era a noite, quando adormecêmos!<br> +<br> + Do dia apenas se mostraram raios<br> +Pelas frestas da casa, dispertámos,<br> +Para depressa o leito abandonarmos,<br> +Para nos embrenhar no espesso bosque;<br> +Pois que por cumulo de felicidade<br> +O dia se tornára tão brilhante,<br> +Como se não houvesse antes chovido.<br> +<br> + Bem dissemos o céo, do céo em face,<br> +Admirados de prodigios tantos,<br> +Tomando por favôr d'alta valia<br> +Esta mudança, assaz inexperada!<br> +Só de Deus a vontade omnipotente<br> +Tornar nos fez alegres, quando antes<br> +Em triste meditar eramos todos.<br> +<br> + Procurámos então do rio as graças<br> +Para aos nossos passeios dar comêço:<br> +D'elle, á margem sentados, nossas vistas<br> +Tão ávidas de encantos, espraiámos<br> +Pelos contórnos todos.... quão sublime<br> +Se nos mostrou então a Natureza!...<br> +A par da solidão tão agradavel,<br> +Qual a do campo ao despontar da aurora,<br> +Gozava-mos prazeres eminentes<br> +Tudo gostando e tudo admirando!<br> +Oh! como é bello o habitar bem longe,<br> +Bem longe das cidades populosas!<br> +Como é dôce ao nascer da manhã clara<br> +Ouvir o meigo canto dos volateis<br> +Tão lindos, tão gentis, da nossa terra!<br> +E estes, o seu gorgeio modulavam<br> +Como o hymno cadente offerecido<br> +Ao no céu e na terra omnipotente,<br> +Ao Deus Senhor dá basta Natureza!<br> +Assim elles saúdavam bem contentes<br> +O despontar do dia magestoso<br> +Que, como nós, talvez não esperassem!<br> +Saúdavam do Senhor a só grandeza<br> +No lédo gorgeiar tão innocente!...<br> +<br> + O verde bosque, a relva rociada;<br> +O cantico das aves, tão saúdoso;<br> +O ar tão puro da manhã serena,<br> +Do adusto sol ainda recatada;<br> +As arvores frondosas, verdejantes,<br> +Em fim, a Natureza admirámos<br> +N'estes e n'outros quadros bem tocantes!<br> +Oh! que o sabio pincel na mão do homem,<br> +Inda tocando do sublime a méta,<br> +Jámais póde imitar grandeza tanta!<br> +Uma empresa tamanha não lhe é dada:<br> +Feitura d'estes quadros, Deus somente<br> +Em Sua Omnisciencia fazer póde!!..<br> +<br> + E assim meditando<br> + Na vasta Natura,<br> + As nossas idéas<br> + Pareciam ser<br> + Uma só factura.<br> +<br> + Amámos do campo<br> + A magna belleza;<br> + Amámos dos bosques<br> + A tanta soidão,<br> + Tanta singeleza!<br> +<br> + Enlevados gozámos assim<br> + A mais terna, a mais dôce emoção,<br> + Engolfados em idéas que, juntas,<br> + Pareciam de um só coração!<br> +<br> + Pareciam de um só coração<br> + Os enlevos de almas tão dadas;<br> + E as nossas acções se formavam<br> + No pensar mais profundo escudadas.<br> +<br> + Taes eram as delicias que tornavam<br> +Nossas almas assaz extaseadas,<br> +E sempre assim, jámais tempo perdemos,<br> +Tudo quizemos vêr, e tudo vimos!<br> +<br> + Longas estradas, de abastado mato<br> +Orladas na extenção indefinida,<br> +Cortadas de outras tantas, que conduzem<br> +Os viandantes a diversos pontos,<br> +Ora direitas, ora tortuosas,<br> +Alteadas aqui, ali suaves,<br> +Irregulares todas, e de rios<br> +Ás vezes atalhadas; estas estradas<br> +Tão solitarias sempre, e só deixando<br> +Ouvir a intercalada melodia<br> +Dos tantos plumi-varios passarinhos;<br> +D'estas estradas percorrêmos parte,<br> +E apenas encontrávamos de espaço<br> +Cavalgaduras guiadas por seus donos,<br> +Que desciam ao porto, conduzindo<br> +Os cereáes, productos recolhidos,<br> +Das lavouras além d'esses lugares.<br> +<br> + E os poucos passageiros<br> + Que encontrávamos, mostravam<br> + Um caracter bem civil,<br> + Bem cortezes nos saudavam.<br> +<br> + Ás vezes alguma coisa,<br> + Só por curiosidade,<br> + Inquiriamos, e sempre<br> + Respondiam com bondade;<br> +<br> + Perguntando ora o destino<br> + De tão diversas estradas,<br> + Ora as distancias, o fim,<br> + E as respostas eram dadas.<br> +<br> + Eis emfim já descripto quase tudo<br> +Quanto fizemos, quanto de agradavel<br> +Achámos no Baldeador, no biduo espaço,<br> +Em que tantos prazeres desfructámos<br> +No bello apreciar dos bellos campos;<br> +Porém inda é forçoso que se digam<br> +Duas palavras mais, p'ra concluir-se<br> +O trabalho expontaneo á que propuz-me.<br> +<br> + Á esquerda da estrada e pouco antes<br> +Da casa, onde passámos estes dias,<br> +E aonde recebemos os mais puros<br> +Gazalhado e franqueza permittidos;<br> +Esguardámos mui simples fontesinha<br> +Abandonada ahi ao tempo--a tudo.<br> +Ao passarmos por ella, contemplámos<br> +Como triste e sósinha dimanava,<br> +E apreciámos n'ella a Natureza,<br> +Quão prodiga em seus bens offerecia<br> +N'aquella sua obra, tão propicia,<br> +O dôce refrigerio ao viandante,<br> +Libando a cristalina e pura lympha;<br> +Mas, faltava-lhe o meio que fizesse<br> +Chegar a tanto a sua utilidade,<br> +Pois que em breve bacia pedregosa<br> +A lympha de cristal se concentrando,<br> +Deslisa-se depois, á par seguindo<br> +Por junto do caminho, ao morro junto.<br> +Ententámos, portanto, para ella<br> +Dos tantos cuidados nossos, uma quota<br> +Dedicar, e o fizemos promptamente;<br> +E, tanto quanto
