+    Folgam no campo os naturaes prazeres,
+    E a rustica alegria apraz aos Deuses.

+O PASSEIO DOS BARDOS
+AO
+BALDEADOR.
+
+  Que se désse um passeio além das plagas
+D'esta bella cidade do Janeiro,
+Entre si dois amigos[1] decidiram,
+Dando d'est'arte distracção mais ampla
+Ás tão communs fadigas do trabalho.
+Foi então escolhido o amêno sitio
+Que de Baldeador lhe dão o nome;
+E já de antemão fruindo mil prazeres,
+Descreviam na mente os dois amigos,
+Os tantos regozijos que se gozam
+No bello apreciar do bello campo,
+Já contemplando a basta Natureza,
+Já gostando real simplicidade,
+Que difficil se encontra, ou não existe
+N'esta nossa cidade populosa!
+
+  Concebido o passeio, concordaram
+Que no dia seguinte se embarcassem
+Em direcção ao porto do Coqueiro,
+De onde então a pé seguir deviam
+Té o sitio por elles destinado,
+Onde, diante só da Natureza,
+Que n'esta nossa terra tanto sobra,
+Resfolegar pudessem os enlevos
+Que offerece o risonho panorama
+Das montanhas, dos bosques, dos oiteiros,
+Onde tanta poesia se reúne,
+Onde a alma do Bardo se extasia,
+No dôce meditar que o arrebata!...
+
+  Gasto o dia anterior a esse dia
+Em que tanto pensavam estes jovens,
+Ao ponto destinado foram ambos
+Afim de ahi a elles se juntarem
+Mais dois amigos,[2] que tomaram parte
+No bello distrair d'este passeio,
+Que tão grato prazer annunciava,
+N'um folgar tão ridente. Ahi se achavam
+Em breve reúnidos todos quatro,
+Quando em meio era o dia do seu giro:
+Almo prazer em todos respirava,
+Deu-se a voz da partida, eil-os s'embarcam.
+
+      Em sujo batel da roça,
+      De cargas todo tomado,
+      Entraram os quatro amigos
+      Qual em pensar mais ousado:
+      Cada um já assentado
+      Contemplava o borborinho
+      Que se fazia sentir
+      No tão pequeno barquinho.
+
+      De vinte quatro pessôas
+      Já elle tomado estava;
+      Mulheres, homens e cargas
+      Tudo mal se acommodava:
+      Entretanto, a tudo dava
+      Maior graça, mais acção,
+      Os ditos que proferia
+      Do tal barquinho o patrão.
+
+      Este, assentado na pôppa,
+      Tomando do leme conta,
+      Para seguir a viagem
+      Bem galhardo já se aprompta:
+      A prôa do barco aponta
+      Para o sitio desejado;
+      Soltam-se as vélas e vê-se
+      Já o ferro levantando...
+
+        O vento a favôr
+        Que então se agitava,
+        No barco empregava
+        Toda actividade,
+        Que em breve a cidade
+        Nos fez tão distante,
+        Que olhar penetrante
+        Não mais descobria.
+
+        Na vasta bahia
+        Então nos achámos,
+        E a vista espraiámos
+        Em seus arredores:
+        Os bellos verdores
+        Das ilhas formosas,
+        Serras alterosas
+        Fomos contemplando.
+
+        Fomos desfructando
+        Todo o panorama,
+        Que assaz se darrama
+        N'esta bella terra,
+        Aonde se encerra
+        Tanta poesia,
+        De noite e de dia,
+        Em todo o lugar...
+
+      N'estes bellos contemplar
+      Todos engolfados iam,
+      Que nem ao menos sentiam
+      Do sol os ardentes raios.
+
+      Tal era o contentamento
+      Que a todos dominava,
+      Em tudo graça se achava,
+      Tudo era riso e ventura.
+
+      Esquesitos pensamentos
+      Pelo patrão emittidos,
+      Feriam mais os sentidos
+      Da bella reunião.
+
+      Pois ninguem mais desejava
+      Do que nós, se divertir;
+      Em todos, dôce sorrir
+      Ineffabil se mostrava.
+
+      Entanto o activo vento
+      Mais e mais se redobrava,
+      O barco quase voava
+      Impellido pela força;
+
+      Té que tanto foi crescendo
+      E a tal ponto se elevou,
+      Qu'em breve se rebentou
+      Uma das duas escôtas.
+
+      Aos gritos de--férra a véla--
+      A risada foi geral,
+      Fazendo-se mais cabal
+      O nosso divertimento.
+
+        E em taes brincos
+        Nos engolfando,
+        Fômos passando
+        Toda a bahia.
+
+        Em todos, prazer
+        Se manifestava,
+        Em todos reinava
+        O contentamento,
+
+        E em complemento
+        A dôce alegria
+        De todos se via
+        No rosto expressar.
+
+        De tantos enlêvos
+        Foi o só motôr,
+        O Baldeador
+        Já tão desejado!
+
+      E tudo já tendo
+      Bem analisado,
+      Conforme o ensejo
+      Nos foi permittindo,
+      De--terra--uma voz
+      Se deu, e nós todos
+      Do barco da roça
+      Nos fômos saindo.
+
+      Então avistámos,
+      Mesmo á nossa frente,
+      Um alto coqueiro
+      Já envelhecido,
+      O qual nome deu
+      Ao porto, que achámos
+      De curta extenção,
+      Mas appetecido.
+
+      Pequenas casinhas,
+      Em numero breve,
+      De tôsco trabalho,
+      Sem ordem alguma,
+      Postadas em fila
+      Ao longo da praia...
+      Do Coqueiro o porto
+      Este é, em summa.
+
+E já em terra todos, espraiamos
+A vista ao derredor do porto ameno;
+Tudo n'elle animava, e assaz se via
+A Natureza em tudo derramada
+N'este sitio tão bello e pitoresco.
+Aqui, de uma janella se mostrava
+Como que a mêdo a púdica donzella;
+Ali, o ancião curvado de annos
+Desfructava do porto a vista bella;
+Estes, debaixo dos tamarinheiros,
+Que em frente ás casas ficam, junto á praia,
+Abrigados do sol, se distraiam
+C'os novos viajôres que saltavam....
+Oh! como é bello o habitar bem longe,
+Bem longe, das cidades grandiosas!
+Ali, a Natureza em toda a parte,
+Nos homens e animaes, na flôr, nas hervas,
+Nas casas, nos costumes dos seus povos;
+Aqui o luxo e o estridor dos carros
+D'esses grandes do mundo... e o labyrinto...
+Tudo é confusão, tudo é buliço....
+
+  Oh! como é bello o habitar bem longe,
+Bem longe das cidades grandiosas!
+Desfructa-se do campo almos prazeres,
+No campo o home'em tudo s'extasia!...
+
+      E ahi nós tendo
+      Pago ao patrão,
+      E as nossas malas
+      Tendo na mão;
+      Dôce espanção
+      Dêmos á vista,
+      Pois que no porto
+      Nada contrista.
+
+      A estrada fômos
+      Depois tomando,
+      Que em frente 'stava
+      Se nos mostrando;
+      Fomos caminhando...
+      Por todo o passeio
+      Tudo era alegria,
+      Tudo era recreio.
+
+    E a casa avistámos, emfim,
+    Que pôz cabo á viagem comprida;
+    N'ella, a simplicidade esculpida
+    Nós achámos, no aspecto singelo.
+
+    Isolada n'um campo, onde finda
+    Mui custosa ladeira, escarpada,
+    Sem abrigos ao vento, assentada
+    Nós a vimos, e pois a saúdamos.
+
+    Oh! então a alegria se fez
+    Dignamente expressar em nós todos;
+    O contento se via nos modos,
+    Nas acções, nas palavras, nos rostos.
+
+    Já da casa as pessôas se apinham,
+    E contentes nos vêm receber;
+    Seus olhares expressam prazer,
+    Tudo é natureza e bom grado.
+
+      A cancella transpuzémos
+      E na casa nos achámos;
+      Declinava o sol então,
+      E á mesa nos sentámos,
+
+      Pois da fome já em nós
+      O effeito era sentido;
+      Bem depressa devorámos
+      O que então nos foi servido.
+
+        E tudo acabado
+        Deixamos a mesa;
+        Fômos logo vêr
+        Do sitio a belleza.
+
+  Na casa, pois, frequencia limitada
+Nós tivemos, porque sómente o bosque,
+O caminho, de matos abastado,
+A si nos atraiam por um modo
+Bem custoso de assaz o expressarmos:
+Ahi, sob uma arvore frondosa,
+Qual é a do Brasil bella mangueira,
+A sombra desfructava-mos contentes
+A mais dôce emoção de almos favôres,
+Quaes os que a Natureza ha concedido
+A este nosso paiz de primavera!
+
+  O regato que foge mansamente,
+Em seu curso contínuo, murmurando,
+Que após si as arêas e as pedrinhas
+Leva, no deslisar do seu caminho;
+O meigo sabiá, terno ao ouvido
+Quando a sua canção gorgêa alegre;
+O alvi-negro colleiro, cujo nome,
+Amplamente lhe expressa a apparencia;
+O serrador, passarinho, que n'um galho
+Sempre pulando, arremedar parece
+Da serra o exercicio na madeira;
+O veloz beija-flôr, esvoaçando,
+E no ar se retendo, p'ra d'est'arte
+Melhor fruir da flôr o doce succo;
+A leve mariquita, a borboleta,
+De lindissimas côres matizada,
+Que nos deleita a vista, e em nós desperta
+O poder vasto do Arbitro do Mundo....
+Tudo isto para nós era um portento,
+Tudo em nós era grande! e este espetac'lo
+Bem longe de encontrarmos nas cidades,
+Nós juntos contemplámos, enlevados,
+Bebendo a longos tragos gozos tantos,
+Quantos pódem fruir peitos amigos,
+Que unidos desde a infancia, se engolfavam
+Agora meditando n'estas obras
+Tão grandes, tão sublimes, da Natura:
+Dois peitos, que da idade dos errores
+Saíram, para entrar na dos pensares,
+Sempre juntos, e sempre alegres, dando
+Mais um culto á Amizade, a cujo throno
+De per si elles mesmos se elevaram,
+Quando dos annos no verdôr brincavam,
+Quando suas idéas similhantes
+Pouco longe avançavam dos limites
+Prescriptos a idades tão nascentes....
+
+--Era pequena arvore plantada,
+Por mão á experiencia pouco affeita,
+Para depois seus ramos alongando,
+Chegar ao crescimento precisado
+E offerecer o sazônado fructo:
+Essa arvore crescida é já bastante,
+E o fructo seu gozamol-o mutuamente.
+
+      Assim meditando,
+      Do dia primeiro
+      Passamos o resto:
+      E quão lisongeiro
+      Nos foi tal deleite,
+      O ar respirando
+      Do bosque, tão puro!
+      Até que escuro
+      Tornando-se o dia,
+      Não mais se podia
+      Do Baldeador
+      Os sitios notar.
+
+    E então para casa nos fômos
+    Muito prestes todos reunir,
+    E ahi conversando, tivemos
+    Varias coisas com que distrair.
+
+    Referimos, por tanto, o que achámos,
+    E o que vimos de mais agradavel;
+    Para nós tudo era sublime,
+    Tudo era bem admiravel.
+
+        E parte da noite
+        Assim nós passando,
+        Depois a findamos
+        O _solo_ jogando;
+
+        Pois fóra da côrte
+        De noite, o passar
+        É máo, não havendo
+        Um bello luar.
+
+        E foi justamente
+        O que aconteceu;
+        O jogo, por tanto,
+        Logo appareceu.
+
+  Alta era a noite quando repoisámos
+Os já bastante fatigados membros;
+E ainda assim achava-mos bem curto
+O espaço que tivemos n'esse dia
+Para vêr tudo, tudo apreciando;
+Pois a noite tomou-nos pressurosa
+Na nossa digressão tão animada,
+Tão cheia de elevados pensamentos!
+O dia desejava-mos que em breve
+Nos viesse fazer deixar os leitos:
+E a estes desejos, que do peito eram,
+Fazia-mos juntar os promenores
+Dos passeios que, ao nascer d'alva,
+Havia-mos de dar; pois que nós ambos
+Idéas possuindo assaz ardentes,
+Parecia-nos pouco tudo quanto
+Á nossa vista se nos amostrasse!
+
+  Mas ah! que em face de desejos tantos
+Tivemos de ceder bem humilhados,
+Não mais cuidando da manhã seguinte
+Nos passeios que havia-mos pensado!
+Oh! que a noite tornou-se bem espessa!
+O trovão foi ouvido.... e após momentos
+Manifestou-se a chuva em abundancia!...
+Tudo foi instantaneo; incontinente
+A tristeza se fez igual em todos,
+Grande parte cabendo aos jovens Bardos
+Que infructifero viam o passeio.
+A chuva foi annuncio de má nova:
+A chuva distruiu quantos projectos
+Se tinham feito do passeio ao campo.
+E ambos de tristura possuidos,
+A nada atingiam mais, senão o como
+Na roça passariam hinvernados.
+Todos, n'estes e n'outros pensamentos
+Pouco e pouco nos fômos entregando
+Ao mole somno, a que emfim cedemos
+Da chuva ouvindo o susurrar monotono.
+
+  O repoisar foi breve, que avançada
+Já era a noite, quando adormecêmos!
+
+  Do dia apenas se mostraram raios
+Pelas frestas da casa, dispertámos,
+Para depressa o leito abandonarmos,
+Para nos embrenhar no espesso bosque;
+Pois que por cumulo de felicidade
+O dia se tornára tão brilhante,
+Como se não houvesse antes chovido.
+
+  Bem dissemos o céo, do céo em face,
+Admirados de prodigios tantos,
+Tomando por favôr d'alta valia
+Esta mudança, assaz inexperada!
+Só de Deus a vontade omnipotente
+Tornar nos fez alegres, quando antes
+Em triste meditar eramos todos.
+
+  Procurámos então do rio as graças
+Para aos nossos passeios dar comêço:
+D'elle, á margem sentados, nossas vistas
+Tão ávidas de encantos, espraiámos
+Pelos contórnos todos.... quão sublime
+Se nos mostrou então a Natureza!...
+A par da solidão tão agradavel,
+Qual a do campo ao despontar da aurora,
+Gozava-mos prazeres eminentes
+Tudo gostando e tudo admirando!
+Oh! como é bello o habitar bem longe,
+Bem longe das cidades populosas!
+Como é dôce ao nascer da manhã clara
+Ouvir o meigo canto dos volateis
+Tão lindos, tão gentis, da nossa terra!
+E estes, o seu gorgeio modulavam
+Como o hymno cadente offerecido
+Ao no céu e na terra omnipotente,
+Ao Deus Senhor dá basta Natureza!
+Assim elles saúdavam bem contentes
+O despontar do dia magestoso
+Que, como nós, talvez não esperassem!
+Saúdavam do Senhor a só grandeza
+No lédo gorgeiar tão innocente!...
+
+  O verde bosque, a relva rociada;
+O cantico das aves, tão saúdoso;
+O ar tão puro da manhã serena,
+Do adusto sol ainda recatada;
+As arvores frondosas, verdejantes,
+Em fim, a Natureza admirámos
+N'estes e n'outros quadros bem tocantes!
+Oh! que o sabio pincel na mão do homem,
+Inda tocando do sublime a méta,
+Jámais póde imitar grandeza tanta!
+Uma empresa tamanha não lhe é dada:
+Feitura d'estes quadros, Deus somente
+Em Sua Omnisciencia fazer póde!!..
+
+        E assim meditando
+        Na vasta Natura,
+        As nossas idéas
+        Pareciam ser
+        Uma só factura.
+
+        Amámos do campo
+        A magna belleza;
+        Amámos dos bosques
+        A tanta soidão,
+        Tanta singeleza!
+
+      Enlevados gozámos assim
+      A mais terna, a mais dôce emoção,
+      Engolfados em idéas que, juntas,
+      Pareciam de um só coração!
+
+      Pareciam de um só coração
+      Os enlevos de almas tão dadas;
+      E as nossas acções se formavam
+      No pensar mais profundo escudadas.
+
+  Taes eram as delicias que tornavam
+Nossas almas assaz extaseadas,
+E sempre assim, jámais tempo perdemos,
+Tudo quizemos vêr, e tudo vimos!
+
+  Longas estradas, de abastado mato
+Orladas na extenção indefinida,
+Cortadas de outras tantas, que conduzem
+Os viandantes a diversos pontos,
+Ora direitas, ora tortuosas,
+Alteadas aqui, ali suaves,
+Irregulares todas, e de rios
+Ás vezes atalhadas; estas estradas
+Tão solitarias sempre, e só deixando
+Ouvir a intercalada melodia
+Dos tantos plumi-varios passarinhos;
+D'estas estradas percorrêmos parte,
+E apenas encontrávamos de espaço
+Cavalgaduras guiadas por seus donos,
+Que desciam ao porto, conduzindo
+Os cereáes, productos recolhidos,
+Das lavouras além d'esses lugares.
+
+      E os poucos passageiros
+      Que encontrávamos, mostravam
+      Um caracter bem civil,
+      Bem cortezes nos saudavam.
+
+      Ás vezes alguma coisa,
+      Só por curiosidade,
+      Inquiriamos, e sempre
+      Respondiam com bondade;
+
+      Perguntando ora o destino
+      De tão diversas estradas,
+      Ora as distancias, o fim,
+      E as respostas eram dadas.
+
+  Eis emfim já descripto quase tudo
+Quanto fizemos, quanto de agradavel
+Achámos no Baldeador, no biduo espaço,
+Em que tantos prazeres desfructámos
+No bello apreciar dos bellos campos;
+Porém inda é forçoso que se digam
+Duas palavras mais, p'ra concluir-se
+O trabalho expontaneo á que propuz-me.
+
+  Á esquerda da estrada e pouco antes
+Da casa, onde passámos estes dias,
+E aonde recebemos os mais puros
+Gazalhado e franqueza permittidos;
+Esguardámos mui simples fontesinha
+Abandonada ahi ao tempo--a tudo.
+Ao passarmos por ella, contemplámos
+Como triste e sósinha dimanava,
+E apreciámos n'ella a Natureza,
+Quão prodiga em seus bens offerecia
+N'aquella sua obra, tão propicia,
+O dôce refrigerio ao viandante,
+Libando a cristalina e pura lympha;
+Mas, faltava-lhe o meio que fizesse
+Chegar a tanto a sua utilidade,
+Pois que em breve bacia pedregosa
+A lympha de cristal se concentrando,
+Deslisa-se depois, á par seguindo
+Por junto do caminho, ao morro junto.
+Ententámos, portanto, para ella
+Dos tantos cuidados nossos, uma quota
+Dedicar, e o fizemos promptamente;
+E, tanto quanto coube em nossas forças,
+Empregámos, e após edificou-se
+Pequeno chafariz que foi por ambos
+Erigido em memoria do passeio
+Que fômos dar a tão jucundo sitio!
+
+  Nenhum merito existe n'esta obra,
+Que é trabalho imperfeito, e não permitte
+A duração dos sec'los, desejada;
+Porêm n'ella quizémos tão sómente
+Chamar a attenção do viandante
+A contemplar o monumentosinho
+Em que (nos divertindo) offerecemos
+Util serviço áquelles que o quizessem.
+
+  Este nosso trabalho foi saudado
+Por juizos sensatos, em que viam
+Distracção tão sómente de dois jovens;
+Porêm, a par das bôas intenções,
+Vinha tambem o genio malfazejo,
+Que nada podendo vêr de utilidade,
+De tudo distruir se regozija:
+E o nosso chafarisinho, tão humilde.
+Soffreu a distruição que almas mesquinhas,
+Por dôce galardão, lhe offereceram!...
+Toda a sua belleza reduziu-se
+Ao primitivo estado, e a pobre fonte
+Deslisa agora humilde, como d'antes,
+Por junto do caminho, ao morro junto!
+
+        E agora nem mais
+        Existe um signal,
+        Que indique á quem passe
+        Um trabalho tal.
+
+        Que a pobre, coitada!
+        Soffreu, como tudo,
+        Do genio do mal
+        O mesquinho estudo.
+
+        Embora quizesse
+        Seu garbo ostentar,
+        Por força lhe havia
+        O mal atacar;
+
+        Pois este contagio
+        Em tudo se vê;
+        Remedio não ha:
+        Tambem, para quê?
+
+        Sublimes colossos,
+        Obras grandiosas,
+        Nada pois resiste
+        As furias damnosas.
+
+        E a pobre, coitada!
+        Soffreu, como tudo,
+        Do genio do mal
+        O mesquinho estudo.
+
+        Agora, nem mais
+        Existe um signal,
+        Que indique a quem passe
+        Um trabalho tal!...
+
+  E dois dias passámos, bem contentes,
+N'estas e n'outras distracções tão ternas,
+Que á penna e á idéa nos escapam:
+Dois dias, que talvez bem tarde, ou nunca,
+Teremos de gozar, como esses dias,
+Em que tanta amizade se reúna,
+Casadas no pensar dos jovens Bardos.
+Tantas recordações, enlevos tantos,
+Assaz nos preoccupam inda, e damos
+Largas ao pensamento, cogitando
+Uma por uma as scenas de que fômos
+Tão gratas testemunhas; e uma por uma
+Tão intimas idéas vem, dos Bardos,
+Poisar junto das bellas reflexões.
+
+  Oh! salve dias felices tão formosos!
+Salve, ó Baldeador, a nós tão caro!
+Tua imagem jámais será riscada
+Das nossas recordações, assaz sinceras!
+
+        E quando era a tarde
+        Já adiantada,
+        E já nossas malas
+        Stando preparadas,
+
+        Então terno adeus
+        Dissemos, saúdosos,
+        Do Baldeador
+        Aos sitios formosos:
+
+        Á toda a familia
+        Com quem nos achámos,
+        Nossa gratidão
+        Assaz penhorámos;
+
+        Pois ampla franqueza
+        Nos foi offertada,
+        Desde que no sitio
+        Fizemos entrada!...
+
+  Tomando emfim a estrada, a pé seguimos,
+Contristados bastante das lembranças.
+Despertadas em nós a cada instante
+Que o Baldeador nos recordava,
+E assim andando sempre, era já noite
+Quando na joven Nictheroy entrámos,
+
+        Onde embarcados
+        O már passámos,
+        E assim chegámos
+        Á vasta côrte.
+
+  E d'ella já em terra, pressurosos,
+Buscámos nossos lares, já pensando
+Que um dia depois entrar deviamos
+Nas tão communs fadigas do trabalho!
+

+  Foi assim o passeio terminado
+Que será para nós sempre lembrado.
