+<p class="line">Hij sliep steeds aan den rechterkant,</p>
+<p class="line">En zij dus aan de linkerhand,</p>
+<p class="line">En duurde ’t zoo ook jaren voort,</p>
+<p class="line">Nooit werd hun zoete rust verstoord;</p>
+<p class="line">Als hij zijn Eva had gekust,</p>
+<p class="line">Zei zij: „Nacht Spar, slaap nu gerust</p>
+<p class="line">En strek je beentjes, lieve guit,</p>
+<p class="line">Maar recht toe tot den morgen uit”,</p>
+<p class="line">En verder werd, na ’t kort gebed,</p>
+<p class="line">Door d’een op d’ander niet gelet.</p>
+<p class="line">Maar, in een slapeloozen nacht</p>
+<p class="line">Terwijl de vrouw aan ’t huiswerk dacht,</p>
+<p class="line">Daar hoort ze plotseling gedruisch;</p>
+<p class="line">Ze luistert, zoekt—een grijze muis</p>
+<p class="line">Heeft zich, o gruwel! onversaagd</p>
+<p class="line">In ’t vreedzaam slaapvertrek gewaagd.</p>

+<p class="line">Dat hij, zoo op zijn rust gesteld,</p>
+<p class="line">Nog in het middernachtlijk uur</p>
+<p class="line">Zou opstaan voor een avontuur?—</p>
+<p class="line">Hij greep een stok en sloeg in ’t rond,</p>
+<p class="line">Maar sloeg, waar zich geen muis bevond.</p>
+<p class="line">Hij sprong en stapte heen en weêr,</p>
+<p class="line">Maar miste ’t raken keer op keer.</p>
+<p class="line">En Eva lag, met bangen blik,</p>
+<p class="line">Te staren, en kreeg schrik op schrik;</p>
+<p class="line">Zij riep maar: „Sparretje! sla raak,</p>
+<p class="line">Opdat de muis mij niet genaak!”—</p>
+<p class="line">En was ’t een oogenblikje stil,</p>
+<p class="line">Dra klonk weêr vreeslijk Eva’s gil:</p>
+<p class="line">Vriend Spar geraakte gansch in vuur</p>
+<p class="line">En sloeg op tafel, stoel en muur.</p>
+<p class="line">Maar eindelijk sprong de rappe muis,</p>
+<p class="line">—Misschien toch was ’t wel bij abuis</p>
+<p class="line">Op Eva’s hoofd, en zoo op ’t bed.</p>
+<p class="line">Wat Eva gilde! Met één zet</p>
+<p class="line">Dook zij, van vreeze bijna gek,</p>
+<p class="line">Met hoofd en al beneden ’t dek,</p>
+<p class="line">Maar stak, daar haar het dek bedroog,</p>
+<p class="line">De bloote beenen ver omhoog;</p>
+<p class="line">En Spar, die nu gansch woedend is,</p>
+<p class="line">Springt toe en slaat, maar altijd mis.</p>

+<p class="line">Zij werkt zich uit de dekens, maar</p>
+<p class="line">Vol angst nog, lispt ze: „och, is ’t waar?</p>
+<p class="line">Och, Sparretje, ik dank u wel.</p>
+<p class="line">Wat werkt zoo’n beest op mijn gestel!</p>
+<p class="line">Nu kom ik er eens even uit,</p>
+<p class="line">Om u te danken, lieve guit!”—</p>
+<p class="line">Maar ’t muisje, nog al bij de hand,</p>
+<p class="line">Keek juist van onder ’t ledikant,</p>
+<p class="line">En Eva nauwlijks op den grond,</p>
+<p class="line">Sprong met haar dikke voetjes rond.</p>
+<p class="line">Zij schreeuwde luid: „Daar is de muis:</p>
+<p class="line">Jaag Sparlief! ’t beest toch buitenshuis.”—</p>
+<p class="line">Fluks boog de man zich op den grond,</p>
+<p class="line">Of hij de snoode muis ook vond,</p>
+<p class="line">Sloeg woedend om zich, keer op keer;</p>
+<p class="line">Maar zie, de muis ontsnapte weêr,</p>
+<p class="line">En zuchtend klaagde ’t echtlijk paar:</p>
+<p class="line">„Wij vangen ’t dier nog in geen jaar;</p>
+<p class="line">Wat ons nog overkomen zal</p>
+<p class="line">Bij zulk een schrikklijk ongeval?”</p>

+<p class="line">Hier was een goede raad wel duur;</p>
+<p class="line">Liet zich de muis ook niet meer zien,</p>
+<p class="line">Toch bracht zij angst aan de echtelien.</p>
+<p class="line">Vrouw Eva’s moed was lang gedoofd</p>
+<p class="line">En Spar, hij krabde zich het hoofd;</p>
+<p class="line">Men keek elkaâr verlegen aan</p>
+<p class="line">En durfde niet ter rust te gaan.</p>
+<p class="line">Niet zonder reden ook, want ach!</p>
+<p class="line">Daar kwam weêr ’t beestje voor den dag</p>
+<p class="line">En ’t lijden ving op nieuw weêr aan.</p>
+<p class="line">Doch Spar zei: <span class="corr" id="xd31e374" title="Niet in bron">„</span>Vrouw, blijf gij maar staan;</p>
+<p class="line">’k Weet nu al hoe ik ’t hebben moet:</p>
+<p class="line">Ik vang het ondier in mijn hoed.”—</p>
+<p class="line">Hij greep den hoed, ging stil en zacht</p>
+<p class="line">Met sprakeloozen mond ter jacht;</p>
+<p class="line">Maar ’t muisje, even rustig stil,</p>
+<p class="line">Ziet dra wat Sparrebeen nu wil,</p>
+<p class="line">En hoe zich onze vriend ook weer’,</p>
+<p class="line">Het fopt den sukkel keer op keer.</p>
+<p class="line">Het loerde op de dikke vrouw,</p>
+<p class="line">Als of het haar verjagen wou;</p>
+<p class="line">Maar Eva, door ’t gevaar nu leep,</p>
+<p class="line">Zei: „Wacht eens, Monster, ’k vat de kneep”;</p>
+<p class="line">En nam van achter ’t ledikant</p>
+<p class="line">Een groote parapluie ter hand,</p>
+<p class="line">Die zij heldhaftig opensloeg,</p>
+<p class="line">Terwijl haar man op ’t muisje joeg.</p>

+<p class="line">Maar Spar zei: „Top! ik weet het al,</p>
+<p class="line">Nu loopt het ondier in den val</p>
+<p class="line">Zie, ’k neem mijn slaapmuts, beste meid!</p>
+<p class="line">En ’k leg die stil en met beleid</p>
+<p class="line">Hier midden in de kamer neêr,</p>
+<p class="line">En ’k vang de muis, ja bij mijn eer!</p>
+<p class="line">Laat gij u van uw man maar raân</p>
+<p class="line">En blijf maar stil wat achter aan!”</p>
+<p class="line">—De wollen muts werd neêrgelegd,</p>
+<p class="line">Schoon Eva zei: „’t Komt nooit terecht.”—</p>
+<p class="line">Daar zat vriend Spar nu met zijn vrouw</p>
+<p class="line">Bijna een half uur in de kou,</p>
+<p class="line">Soms dommelde Eva zachtjes in,</p>
+<p class="line">Maar dat was niet naar Sparbeens zin;</p>
+<p class="line">Hij gaf haar somtijds zulk een stoot,</p>
+<p class="line">Dat Eva achterover schoot.</p>
+<p class="line">Maar zie, daar kwam de muis weêr aan,</p>
+<p class="line">Nu liep ze voort, dan bleef ze staan,</p>
+<p class="line">Dan weder keek ze eens deftig rond,</p>
+<p class="line">Of zij ook ergens iemand vond:</p>
+<p class="line">Zij zag de muts, bekeek die stil,</p>
+<p class="line">Toen kroop ze er in; maar Eva’s gil</p>

+<p class="line">„Kom”, sprak nu de onversaagde man,</p>

+<p class="line">Hoe kunt ge zulk een denkbeeld voên!</p>
+<p class="line">Ach, Sparretje, geloof mij vrij,</p>
+<p class="line">De muis is slim en vlug er bij,</p>
+<p class="line">En zoo ontkomt ze u eindlijk nog,”</p>

+<p class="line">Ik zeg je zult nu eens wat zien:</p>
+<p class="line">Ik zal de muis een lesje biên,</p>

+<p class="line">Sterf nu, verschrikkelijke muis!</p>
+<p class="line">Den marteldood hier in mijn huis.”</p>
+<p class="line">En Eva sprak met ’t hoofd op zij’:</p>
+<p class="line">„Och, Sparrebeen, heb medelij’!</p>
+<p class="line">Wie weet hoe ’t eens met ons nog gaat,</p>
+<p class="line">Laat ’t beestje loopen, vrij op straat.”</p>
+<p class="line">Maar Spar, die niet meer luistren kon,</p>
+<p class="line">Schudt ’t arme muisje in de ton.</p>
+<p class="line">„Verga, verteer, o monsterdier!</p>
+<p class="line">Uw dood geeft mij het grootst pleizier!”</p>

+<p class="line">In één woord: Spar was in zijn schik</p>
+<p class="line">Dat hij zoo flink den kampstrijd won.</p>
+<p class="line">Hij trad behoedzaam naar de ton,</p>
+<p class="line">Hij nam het deksel, keek eens om,</p>
+<p class="line">Als dacht hij, die komt nooit weêrom,</p>
+<p class="line">Pof! daar lag, midden in het vat,</p>
+<p class="line">De muis te spartlen in het nat.</p>
+<p class="line">Maar Spar, kreeg nog al niet zijn zin:</p>
+<p class="line">Dat vat daar was een gaatje in,</p>
+<p class="line">En toen de muis dat gaatjen zag.</p>
+<p class="line">Toen kwam zij daadlijk voor den dag,</p>
+<p class="line">En Eva sprong wel vijf voet hoog,</p>
+<p class="line">Nu haar de muis op nieuw bedroog:</p>
+<p class="line">Zij greep vol angst de paraplu,</p>
