It makes +pleasant reading, it holds the student's interest throughout, and its +language is clear and simple. + +The author of _Fortuna_, Enrique Pérez Escrich (1829-1897), was born in +Valencia, Spain, but he went to Madrid when a young man. He was a +prolific writer of popular stories. Both _Fortuna_ and _Tony_, another +dog story by the same author, are evidence that Pérez Escrich knew dogs +and loved them. Sus +conocimientos eran tan generales que su conversación resultaba siempre +instructiva y amena. En el centro de un grupo de corpulentos árboles se +alzaba un pabellón en donde pasaban durante las calurosas horas de la +canícula el abuelo y el nieto largos ratos, entregados unas veces a los +ejercicios de la gimnasia y de la esgrima, otras a la lectura.[5] + +En el momento que vamos a permitir a nuestros lectores que entren en el +pabellón, don Salvador y Juanito se hallaban haciendo lo que en el +lenguaje técnico de los gimnasios se llaman poleas, ejercicio que +desarrolla los músculos de los brazos, ensancha el pecho y abre el +apetito. + +El viejo y el niño iban vestidos lo mismo, pantalón de lienzo blanco, +una almilla rayada ceñida al cuerpo, zapatillas y cinturón de lona. + +Este ligerísimo traje era el más a propósito para hacer gimnasia, sobre +todo en las horas calurosas del mes de julio. + +--Basta por hoy, Juanito, basta por hoy,--dijo el anciano, cogiendo un +pañuelo y limpiando el sudor que corría con abundancia por la frente de +su nieto. + +--No estoy cansado,--contestó Juanito,--si Vd. quiere, podemos continuar +hasta que Polonia nos llame para comer. + +Polonia era el ama de gobierno y había sido nodriza de Juanito. Comenzó +a subir la rampa del barranco con gran fatiga. + +Una vez en la carretera, echó a correr hacia el pueblo. + +El cielo se había encapotado, el viento producía en las hojas de los +árboles ese ruido que imita el eterno movimiento de las olas del mar al +estrellarse sobre las rocas de las costas. + +Este cambio repentino de tiempo, tan frecuente en el mes de agosto, no +fué apercibido por Polonia, que corría y corría siempre, respirando de +un modo fatigoso. + +Ya cerca del pueblo vió venir gente hacia ella. + +Eran don Salvador, el alcalde y el secretario, que, extrañándoles la +tardanza de Juanito, iban en su busca. + +Al ver a Polonia amordazada y con las manos atadas a la espalda, don +Salvador lanzó un grito de espanto, como si lo adivinara todo. + +El alcalde y el secretario quitaron la mordaza y las ataduras de las +manos de Polonia, que cayendo de rodillas a los pies de su buen amo, +sólo pudo decir: + +--¡Me han robado a Juanito, señor, me lo han robado!... + +Y volvió a desmayarse. + +Don Salvador se quedó aterrado, le flaquearon las piernas y se abrazó al +cuello del alcalde para no caerse. + +Afortunadamente, la pareja de la guardia civil, que salía del pueblo a +hacer el servicio nocturno de carretera, llegó a tiempo y pudieron +conducir hasta su casa a don Salvador y a Polonia. + +Reanimados un poco con los auxilios que les prestaron, la nodriza contó +detalladamente todo lo que les había ocurrido desde que oyeron los +tristes lamentos de la infame niña mendiga hasta el instante que perdió +el sentido. + +--¡Ah, si hubieras hecho caso de los gruñidos de Fortuna, que os +anunciaban un peligro!--exclamó el anciano, golpeándose la +frente.--¿Pero dónde está que no le veo? + +--Indudablemente le matarían, porque yo tampoco le vi más desde que +salieron aquellos hombres del carrizal.[16] + +--En fin, dame, dame esa carta, Polonia; no se ha perdido todo; esto +será cuestión de dos, de tres, de cuatro mil duros, de todo lo que poseo +si se les antoja pedírmelo. ¿No es verdad, guardias? ¿No es verdad, +señor alcalde? El pobre abuelito, pálido como un muerto, con los +ojos cerrados, se hallaba tendido en un sofá, y a no ser por los +estremecimientos nerviosos que agitaban su cuerpo, se le hubiera tomado +por un cadáver. + +Comenzaba a obscurecer; la tenue luz del crepúsculo penetraba por una +ventana iluminando con vaga claridad la habitación. + +La puerta se abrió poco a poco y asomó por ella la cabeza de un perro. +Era Fortuna, cubierto de lodo. + +Se acercó al sofá y se quedó mirando fijamente al anciano. Esta +contemplación duró algunos segundos; luego comenzó a lamerle las manos a +don Salvador. + +El cálido contacto de aquella lengua agradecida despertó al anciano. Tenían +una fe ciega en las demostraciones del perro. Nadie dudaba de que aquel +noble e inteligente animal les conduciría a donde estaba el niño +secuestrado. + +La noche era serena, apacible. La luna iluminaba con dulce claridad la +tierra. + +El perro, que caminaba siempre delante, volviendo de vez en cuando la +cabeza para ver si le seguían, llegó al puente, y en vez de bajar al +barranco, torció a la izquierda caminando por la orilla del cauce unos +quinientos pasos. Allí bajó por una vereda, cruzó el barranco y tomó una +senda que conducía al monte. + +[Illustration] + +Todos le siguieron en el mayor silencio. La luna lo iluminaba todo; aquel espesar era interminable; a lo +lejos parecía distinguirse grandes grupos de árboles en el fondo de un +valle encerrado entre dos altísimas montañas. El perro continuó +descendiendo por la parte de la umbría durante media hora, luego torció +a la derecha, caminando siempre a media ladera.[L] + +Los expedicionarios comenzaban a impacientarse: llevaban cuatro horas de +no interrumpida marcha por un camino fatigoso y duro. + +Llegaron por fin al valle. Los expedicionarios vieron a pocos pasos de +distancia una casa de pobre apariencia. + +La casa sólo se componía de piso bajo. + +El perro, con mucho recelo, y arrastrándose por la tierra, llegó a la +puerta, la olfateó y luego, volviéndose a los que le seguían, formuló +uno de esos gemidos tan peculiares a los animales de su raza para +indicar la aproximación de su amo. + +Todos oyeron este gemido y los resoplidos que daba Fortuna procurando +introducir el hocico entre el dintel y la puerta. + +A nadie le quedó la menor duda de que en aquella casa estaba Juanito o +por lo menos había estado.[23] + +Uno de los guardias civiles dijo en voz muy baja: + +--Esta casa es la del guarda de esta umbría que acabamos de cruzar.
