-Ykpuoleisen vierashuone (etutupa). Oikeanpuolisessa nurkassa on muuri,
-perällä akkuna ja kummassakin sivuseinässä ovi. Perällä, akkunan alla
-olevalla pöydällä on raamattu ja virsikirja. -- Oikealla -- ovenposkessa
--- on myös pöytä, jossa on kaikenmoisia tupakkaneuvoja. Huonekalut ovat
-kaikki hyvin vanhoja.

-JUSTIINA (lihavanlainen ihminen. Tulee vasemmalta. Puhuu ovelta):
-Riikka tulee tänne sisälle.

-RIIKKA (Ulkona): No eipä nyt vielä! Oikeinko "erustupaan". (Tulee
-sisälle). Siunatkoon, kuinka minun kenkäni ovat kuraset. Mitä se emäntä
-nyt suotta...

-JUSTIINA-. Eipä nämä paikat niin "viiniä" ole, eikä täällä kalossit
-jalassa toisetkaan kulje.

-RIIKKA: Voi voi tuota emäntää. Ei uskoisi, että näin suuren ja rikkaan
-talon emäntä on köyhällekin noin alainen ja ystävällinen. (Ottaa
-esiliinan alle piiloittamansa pussin esille). Tässä olisi...
-(Piiloittaa äkkiä pussin). Onkos isäntä kotona?

-JUSTIINA: Ei ole! Sanoi menevänsä Purakasmäkeen.
-
-RIIKKA: Tässä olisi ne emännän tavarat. Vähän niitä on mielestäni. Se
-on sellainen pirnales -- en mä muuten tule ja vaivanen syntinen sano --
-se kauppamies, että siinä saakin katsoa eteensä. Sanoi villain
-halvenneen ja kahvin ja sokerin tyyristyneen.

-JUSTIINA: Kyllähän se osaa.
-
-RIIKKA: Siellä on sitten sitä kanssa. Ei se ryökäles meinannut antaa
-millään ehdolla, mutta sain kun sainkin sentään jurikkapullollisen kun
-kovalle otin.

-JUSTIINA: Kiitoksia paljon nyt ensiksikin.

-    (Menee pussin kanssa oikealle).

-RIIKKA (Yksin): Tässä näitä pitääkin hyysäämän ja passaamain niinkuin
-hyviäkin pruustinnoita. Joisivat vähemmän, että riittäisi isännän
-antimet. Ovat aina pyytämässä ja kimputtamassa millon jyvä-, milloin
-villapussia kauppamieheen raastamaan. Jonkun leipäkäppyrän sitten
-antavat vaivoista. Täytyy siinä eteensä katsoa. Ei yhtään vaivaa
-omaatuntoani vaikka tuostakin pussista otin puolen kilon paikan,
-puoleksi kumpaakin ja pullostakin pari ryyppyä vedellä vaihdoin.

-JUSTIINA (Tulee viinapikari kädessä): Riikka ottaa nyt tästä...
-
-RIIKKA: Voi voi tuota emäntää. Ihanko minun täytyy tämä ryypätä. Ahha!
-Kylläpä se olikin hyvää. Ei luulisi kotitekoiseksi, kun on aivan kun
-"pränniviinaa". Tuhansia kiitoksia, paljon kiitoksia.

-JUSTIINA: Minä laitoin tuonne pussiin jonkun kakun kotiin vietäväksi.

-RIIKKA: Ja oikeinko nisuakin! Voi, voi tuota emäntää. Kiitoksia nyt,

-JUSTIINA: Täytyihän sitä vähän nisuakin tehdä. Vieraitakin pitäisi
-tulla tänään ja vallan toisesta pitäjästä. Riikka istuu nyt.

-RIIKKA: No, hyvät ihmiset! Ja ketä sieltä?

-JUSTIINA: Vanhan äijän veljen, sen Tiimuksen, pitäisi tuleman.

-RIIKKA: Vai niin! Missäs hän taas onkaan, en muistakaan? Tuntisinkohan
-tuota enään.

-JUSTIINA: Siellä se on Peräisellä "puusnoukkana".

-RIIKKA: Vai siellä se on! Oliko sillä emännällä paljokin lapsia!

-JUSTIINA: Ei ollut kun kaksi, tytär ja poika. Kyllähän siihen Tiimuksen
-mennä kelpasi.

-RIIKKA: Kylläpä vaan! Yksistäänkö tulee?
-
-JUSTIINA: Tytär kuuluu tulevan mukana. Samuli meni heitä vastaan
-kirkolle.
-
-RIIKKA: Sisso! Minä arvaan jo. Peräisen tytär tulee talonkatsojaisille!
-
-JUSTIINA: Kukapa niistä tietää. Kävihän se Samuli siellä Peräiselläkin
-tässä tuonassa aikana, mutta kuten sanoin, kukapa ne tietää.
-
-RIIKKA: Vai jo tämänkin talon nuori isäntä emäntää hommaa. Ja mikäpä on
-hommatessakaan. Kyllä tähän taloon vaan kelpaa tulla! Ei ole pelkoa
-puutteista.
-
-JUSTIINA: Sattu tässä nyt puheeksi tulemaan, mutta ehkä Riikka pitää
-omana tietonaan.
-
-RIIKKA: Tietysti, tietysti! Minulle voi uskoa vaikka mitä!
-
-JUSTIINA: Niin! Jos Samuli ei sattuisi "tykkäämäänkään" siitä Jennystä,
-loppuisi asia alkuunsa, eikä tulisi suotta puheen alaiseksi.
-
-RIIKKA: Niin aina, niin! Mutta sanon sen vieläkin, että kyllä kelpaisi
-tähän tulla. Onnellinen on se tyttö, joka pääsee ison Ykspuoleisen
-emännäksi. Näin hyvä kartano, hyvät maat ja hyvä kymmenlukuinen karja.
-Toisin on laita tuolla toisessa talossa Kakspuoleisessa. Aivan ovat
-nääntymäisillään velkataakan alle ja siltä ovat olevinaan niin komeita
-ja ylpeitä, etteivät ole näkevinään minunlaisiani ihmisiä. Niiden
-"aviisien" ja kirjojensa kanssa ne siellä vaan rehkäsevät mutta tässä
-talossa ei kulutetakaan aikaa sellaisiin turhanpäiväisiin, ei jokaan.
-
-MAIJA (Vasemman puoliselta ovelta): Jokos emäntä heitti suolaa
-vellipataan?
-
-JUSTIINA: Ei! Heitä sinä kaksi umpikourallista, mutta älä vain maahan
-ripottele.
-
-RIIKKA (On oven avautuessa piilottanut pussinsa taaksensa): Ei maar!
-Kyllä minunkin pitäisi tästä taas lähteä. Kohta kait ne tulevat
-kirkostakin ja jos isäntäkin sattuu tulemaan, niin...
-
-JUSTIINA: No, ei ne nyt vallan pian sentään vielä tule. Piti kahviakin
-keittämäni, mutta niinpä se jäi.
-
-RIIKKA: Voi, voi tuota emäntää. Vai vielä kahviakin, eihän toki.
-
-JUSTIINA: Olisihan tuota nyt joutanut olla, kun Riikka aina ajaa niitä
-asioitakin.
-
-RIIKKA: Älkää nyt älkää nyt! Mitäs te nyt joutavia...
-
-JUSTIINA: Ajattelin, että jos vieläkin voisin vaivata Riikkaa. Minulla
-kun on tuo sydänala niin kovin paha, että siihen pitäisi aina olla
-jotain rohtoa. Tässä olisi joku markka sille varalle, jos Riikalla
-sattuisi olemaan kulkua, että toimittaisi minulle taas jonkun jurikan.
-
-RIIKKA: Aina tuo emäntä vaan uskoo minua. Kyllähän minä mielellänikin.
-Minulla on vielä kehruuksiakin tuotavana emännälle, niin siinähän tulee
-yhdessä. Mutta menen vielä siihen kauppamieheen. Kyllä se on oikea
-nylkyri. Tässä taannoin kun vein...
-
-MAIJA (Ovelta): Jussi sanoi, että emäntä heitti kanssa suoloja
-vellipataan.
-
-JUSTIINA: Mikä tässä muistaakaan kaikkia.
-
-RIIKKA: Kyllä minun nyt sentään pitää lähteä. Hyvästi nyt vaan ja
-tuhansia kiitoksia, paljon kiitoksia.

-JUSTIINA: Ei kestä. Riikka muistaa nyt sitten vaan...
-
-RIIKKA (Mennessään): Kyllä, kyllä. Voi, voi tuota emäntää.
-
-MAIJA (Tulee): Kyllä siihen velliin nyt tuli suolaa.
-
-JUSTIINA: Ei suinkaan niitä sieltä enää pois saa. Ja ei ne ole kalliita
-suolat, vähemmästähän riittää velli. Mene navettaan siitä ja vie heiniä
-joka lehmän eteen.
-
-MAIJA (Mennessään itsekseen): Vai heiniä! Mistä se nyt
-tuli?
-
-JUSTIINA (Yksin): Kyllä ne ovat, niin piiat kun rengitkin samallaisia
-hutiluksia. Aina ja joka paikassa pitäisi olla niiden hännillä perään
-katsomassa. (Tuomas tulee). Olikos Purakainen kotona?
-
-TUOMAS: Mitä vielä. Arvasi kait, että näin pyhäpäivänä niitä kulkee
-karhuja. Kyllä se kuului saaneen tervarahoja viime viikolla lähemmäs
-pariin sataan, mutta siinä kysytäänkin miestä, joka siltä omansa pois
-ottaa. (Katsoo akkunasta). Kakspuoleisen Kallekin sinne näkyi tulevan.
-Mitähän asioita hänellä nyt mahtaa olla?
-
-JUSTIINA: En tiedä?
-
-    (Menee vasemmalle).
-
-TUOMAS: Käske tulemaan tänne.
-
-    (Virittää piippunsa).
-
-KALLE (Tulee): Päivää, päivää!
-
-TUOMAS (Hipaisten ohimoaan): Päivää! Mitäs naapurille kuuluu?
-
-KALLE: Kiitos kysymästä! Eipä mitään erinomaista, ainahan sitä mennään
-päivä kerralla.
-
-TUOMAS: Niin aina niin, sano Niini-Aatu, kun ojaan kaatu. Eipä
-tännekään entistä enempää. -- Paina puuta.
-
-KALLE: Eipä ole tainnut vielä kirkkomies palata?
-
-    (Istuu).
-
-TUOMAS: Ei vielä, mutta ehkä pian.
-
-KALLE: Tapasin eilen Samulin tuolla myllyllä ja kun kuulin, että
-hänellä oli aikomus mennä kirkkoon, niin pyysin tuomaan postia
-yksintein.
-
-TUOMAS: Kaimar se sieltä sitten tuleekin.
-
-KALLE: Oli se harmillista kun ei me saatu kantopostia tänne. Liian
-vähän sanoivat olevan tännepäin tulevia sanomalehtiä ja kirjeitä. Ei
-kuulu kannattavan. Nyt olenkin alkanut kaupittelemaan sanomalehtiä joka
-taloon ja kun on riittävä määrä saatu, niin laitetaan uudestaan
-vireille se postiasia. Ehkä isäntäkin nyt tilaa jonkun lehden, vaikkapa
-vaan nyt ensi aluksi kolmipäiväisen.
-
-TUOMAS: Ei ole niistä rahoistakaan tietoa ja koskapa sitä olisi aikaa
-niitä lukeakaan.
-
-KALLE: Kyllä sitä aina aikaa on ja ehkäpä niitä rahojakin sentään
-löytyisi. (Huomaa markan lattialla, joka on Riikalta pudonnut). Mitä
-minä näenkään. Tuolla lattiassakin on yksi markka. (Ottaa markan).
-Onkohan se talonväen vai...
-
-TUOMAS (Ojentaa kättään): Näytäs tänne. Kenenkäpä se muitten on. Miten
-ne niin huolimattomasti rahojaan pitelevät. Joko eukolta tai pojalta se
-on pudonnut.
-
-KALLE: Mutta ehkä nyt sentään merkitään joku sanomalehden tilaus.
-
-TUOMAS: Heh, he! Ei huolita. Kylläpä sitä noissa on lukemista niin
-paljon kun sitä viitsiikään.
-
-    (Osoittaa pöydällä kirjoja).
-
-JUSTIINA (Tulee): Ei sieltä vaan kirkkomiehiä rupea kuulumaan.
-
-KALLE: Jaa! Minähän kuulinkin jo että sieltä pitäisi tulla vieraitakin.
-
-TUOMAS: No, kuka lempo sitä sinullekin jo ehti puhua.
-
-KALLE: Rukki-Riikka tuli tuolla vastaan ja kertoi koko historian.
-
-TUOMAS: Onko se Riikka täällä käynyt?
-
-JUSTIINA (Hätääntyen): Ei täällä ole käynyt. Samuli varmaankin on
-hänelle jotain maininnut. Paljokopa ne sitten tarvitsevat, arvaavat
-loppua.
-
-TUOMAS: Heh, he! Se poika on vielä vähän sellainen lapsellinen.
-
-KALLE: Samulia näyttää onni potkivan. Peräisen Jenny on kelpo tyttö.
-Minä hänen hyvin kyllä tunnen. Me kävimme yht'aikaa kansanopistoa.
-
-JUSTIINA: Vai oli Jennykin kansanopistossa.
-
-TUOMAS: Heh, he! Vähät muusta, mutta onpahan rikas kuitenkin. Se
-veli-Tiimus sitä asiaa on siinä ajanut, tuskinpa se Samuli sitä olisi
-alkuun saanut.
-
-JUSTIINA: Äläs sano. Kävihän se sieltä Peräiseltä keväällä perunoita
-hakemassa.
-
-    (Menee oikialle).
-
-KALLE: Niinpä niin! Kaikkea muuta sanotaan ihmisen katuvan, paitsi
-nuorena naimistaan. Mutta mitenkäs se on isäntä niiden riihikoneitten
-kanssa. Ruvettaisiinko niitä yhdessä hommaamaan, ehkä saataisiin vähän
-huokeammalla.
-
-TUOMAS: Enkä minä hänestä tiedä. Ne ovat niin kovin kalliita ne koneet
-ja jos sattuisivat vielä särkymään, niin tulisi sellainen vahinko,
-etten enää siitä notkosta nousisi.
-
-KALLE: Ei niiden särkymistä vielä tiedä pelätä. Eipä se ole se meidän
-niittokonekaan vielä särkynyt, vaikka on jo kolme kesää ajettu.
-Silloinkin pelkäsitte, kun haastoin yhtenä tilaamaan, että ei niitä
-ehjinä kotiin saada.
-
-TUOMAS (Rientää akkunaan): Sisso! Nyt ne tulevat!
-
-    (Rientää ulos).
-
-KALLE: (Yksin, katsoo ulos ikkunasta). No niin! Siinähän ne nyt ovat.
-Mutta en minä vielä tällä syömiselläni sitä usko, että Peräisen
-Jennystä tähän taloon emäntä tulee ja ihmettelenpä sitäkin, että hän on
-talonkatsojaisille lähtenyt. (Tuomas, Tiimus, Samuli ja Jenny tulevat
-vasemmalta ja Justiina oikealta. Tervehtivät ja tervetulleeksi
-toivottavat, ja kirkkoterveisiä jakelevat.)

-SAMULI: Kas, onhan täällä Kallekin. Tässä ne on sinun "avisis". --
-Istukaa vieraat.
-
-KALLE: Kiitos vaivoistasi. Kylläpä niitä onkin taas aika kasa.
-
-TUOMAS: Täällä olis tupakkaa piippuun.
-
-SAMULI: Mikä sitä nyt piipulla, pyhäpäivänä. On täällä vähän
-parempiakin, ostin kirkonkylän kakku-pakarilta kokonaisen laatikon.
-(Tarjoo paperosseja Kallelle, joka selaa lehtiään). Pane sinäkin nyt
-palamaan juhlan kunniaksi, ettäs oppisit.
-
-KALLE: Kiitos vaan, mutta en minä halua oppia tupakoimaan.
-
-SAMULI: Niin sinä, joka muutenkin olet sellainen akkamainen. (Nauraa
-höhöttää sukkeluuksilleen. Justiina menee oikealle. Jenny saa Kallelta
-sanomalehden ja alkaa sitä lukea).
-
-TIIMUS: Kyllä sillä on tuolla teidän nuorella isännällä sellainen oris,
-että niitä ei olekaan monta.
-
-TUOMAS: Onhan sitä siinä.
-
-SAMULI: No niin sillä pöhistää, että tukka torvella.
-
-TIIMUS: Jos on hevonenkin uljas, mutta kyllä on kääsitkin komeat.
-
-TUOMAS: Niinhän ne niitä rustaa tähän maailman aikaan, komeita jos
-komeita, vallankin nuoret miehet.
-
-SAMULI: Kuka sitä nyt viitsisi häkkikärryillä täristää.
-
-TIIMUS: Ja mikäs on komeillessa, kun on millä komeilee.
-
-JUSTIINA (Tuo kahvia. Jennylle): Sopii nyt ottaa toisenkin nisun
-kaikaleen.
-
-JENNY: Ei, kiitoksia vaan, kyllä tässä riittää.
-
-JUSTIINA: No, ottaa nyt vaan, ei huoli yhtään kursailla. (Laskee nisun
-Jennyn kupin päälle). Kyllä sitä vaan syödä pitää, kun on niin
-laihakin, että... Kuinkas paljon teillä onkaan lehmiä?
-
-JENNY: On niitä viisitoista.
-
-JUSTIINA: Vai viisitoista. Meillä on kahdeksantoista.
-
-SAMULI: Ja hyviä lehmiä kaikki.
-
-TIIMUS: Tässä talossa on maailman sivun ollut hyvä kaunis.
-
-SAMULI: Minä olen aikonut ensi kesänä rakentaa uuden navetankin. Vanha
-on vähän pienenlainen ja nuorta karjaa on kasvamassa.
-
-TIIMUS: Kyllä kait sinä tämän asuinrakennuksenkin uusit.
-
-SAMULI: Kyllä kai se on vuorattava ja maalattava ja tähän päähän on
-pantava "rykkipaperit."
-
-TUOMAS: En minä ole heistä välittänytkään, olen ajatellut, että kyllä
-ne minun aikani auttaa. Nuoret saavat sitten laittaa oman mielensä
-mukaan.
-
-JUSSI (Ovelta): Nuori isäntä! Oris pääsi irti, enkä minä uskalla sitä
-kiinni ottaa.
-
-SAMULI (Mennessään): Ptruu! No, mikä sille nyt tuli.
-
-    (Tiimus ja Tuomaskin menevät. Justiina vie pois tyhjiä kuppia).
-
-KALLE: Sinä olet nyt siis talonkatsojaisilla. Onneksi olkoon!
-
-JENNY (Hämmästyen): Talonkatsojaisilla, minäkö!
-
-KALLE: Sinä tietysti, kukas muu.
-
-JENNY: Niinkö! Nytpä ymmärrän. Ilmankos ne ovatkin kehuneet tätä taloa
-aivan kilvassa, minkä enimmän ehtivät. Minä en ole tiennyt tuon
-taivaallista koko asiasta, enkä olisi tänne tullutkaan jos tuon tiennyt
-olisin.
-
-KALLE: Vai ei ne kaupat sen pitemmällä olekaan. Mutta eikös tämä nuori
-isäntä käynyt teillä keväällä niissä asioissa.
-
-JENNY: Kuului käyneen perunoita hakemassa, mutta minä en silloin ollut
-edes kotonakaan. Eikä kukaan ole minulle sanaakaan hiiskunut. Tuo
-isä-ukon sijainen tahtoi kovin, että lähtisimme kyläilemään tännepäin
-ja kun arvelin, että saisin sinuakin täällä tavata, niin tulin
-lähteneeksi.
-
-KALLE: Ne ovat nämä naapurit vähintäin kymmenen vuotta aikaansa
-jälessä. Luulenpa, että he varmasti uskovat, kun ovat tästä päästä
-naimiskaupan alkaneet, että siitä tulee tosikin. Mutta sinä et sitä
-usko, enkä usko minäkään. Oli todellakin hauskaa, että tavattiin. Olen
-aikonut monasti tulla siellä teillä käymään, mutta niinpä se on jäänyt.

-JENNY: Kaikissa sitä ollaan, sano...
-
-    (Miehet tulevat vasemmalta, Justiina oikealta, tarjottimineen).
-
-TIIMUS: Kyllä ovat komeita toisetkin hevoset. Kumman tamman varsa se on
-tuo ori.
-
-SAMULI: Se on sen mustan varsa. Kyllä siinä on ollut sitten kanssa
-kerrassa hyvä hevonen, mutta vanhuus voittaa.

-JUSTIINA (Tarjoo Jennylle kahvia).
-
-JENNY: Kiitoksia, minä en enään jaksa juoda.
-
-JUSTIINA: No, sopii nyt ottaa. Eihän se huonoa pitäisi olla, paninhan
-minä sikuriakin.
-
-    (Jenny ottaa vaikkakin vastenmielisesti).
-
-TUOMAS: Paljonkos nuo teidän lapset saivat osakseen isä-vainajansa
-kuoleman jälkeen.
-
-TIIMUS: Saivathan ne lähemmäs kymmenen tuhatta kumpainenkin ja pitää
