+...... «Não conhecemos na litteratura indiana, nem talvez em litteratura
+alguma, episodio mais sentido e mais sublime do que aquell'outro do
+Râmâyana,--a «Morte de Yaginadatta». Priamo aos pés de Achilles, na
+«Illiada» de Homero, é admiravel de dor e de sentimento; arrebata-nos a
+lastimosa Dido nos cantos do cisne mantuano ; Ignez deante de Affonso,
+no poema de Camões, abala-nos a alma e obriga-nos a lagrimas: não teme
+porem confronto com Priamo, Dido e Ignez o cego sublime de Valmiki
+deante do assassino de seu filho.
+
+Asserções fundadas, mas que podem passar por temerarias, reclamam prova
+efficaz. Não nos esquivamos a ella.....; tomâmo-nos até de ufania com
+sermos o primeiro que apresenta em linguagem nossa um dos eternos
+monumentos da verdadeira poesia indiana.
+
+Não é o luxuriante e o garrido da fórma o que nos prende ao episodio de
+«Yaginadatta»: difficilmente se aprecia a fórma em toda a sua pureza,
+quando a lima dos commentarios e a crueldade, talvez, das traducções,
+entibiou naturalmente o colorido que brotou espontaneo da paleta do
+artista. Mas aquillo que é sempre bello, aquillo que a mão dos seculos
+não consegue carcomer nem afeiar, aquillo que o genio deixa insculpido
+em caracteres indeleveis--torna immortais e queridos os admiraveis
+«çlokas» da «Morte de Yaginadatta.»
+
+Reproduziremos o episodio em decasillabos portuguezes. Descorado embora
+na traducção modesta, entrever-se-á nelle ao menos a majestosa
+simplicidade da narração, e conjuntamente se descortinará o ponto mais
+elevado a que podem sublimar-se os sentimentos do coração humano.»

+ELUCIDAÇÕES E ADVERTENCIA
+
+
+Os que se derem ao cuidado de confrontar a nossa tentativa com os
+trabalhos de Gorresio acharão porventura divergencias. Advertiremos, por
+isso, que a interpretação de Fauche, cujas versões discrepam a revêzes
+das do filologo italiano, foi a que especialmente nos serviu de guia.
+
+Aos leitores pouco familiarisados com a litteratura indiana offerecemos
+um indice de algumas palavras do _episodio_, mais desconhecidas por
+menos vulgares:

+MORTE DE YAGINADATTA
+
+
+    Quando Ramá, dos homens o mais bravo,
+    partiu para as florestas, Daçaratha
+    --aquelle rei outr'ora tão ditoso,--
+    deixou-se possuir de mágua enorme.
+    Exilados seus filhos, o monarca,
+    tão alto como Indra, escureceu-se
+    nas trevas do infortunio, como quando
+    a sombra de um eclipse os céus invade,
+    tapando ao sol a face.
+
+                           Após seis dias
+    de prantos e saudade, o rei egregio,
+    acordando uma vez á meia noite,
+    lembrou-se de uma falta commettida
+    em afastado tempo, e dirigiu-se
+    desta fórma a Kaoçálya, sua esposa:
+    --Se és tambem acordada, ouve-me attenta,
+    Kaoçálya. Quando um homem, dama illustre,
+    faz uma acção, ou boa ou má, não póde
+    evitar no porvir os fructos della.
+    Qualquer que em suas coisas não distingue
+    o bem e o mal, e ás cegas vai obrando,
+    os sabios appellidam-no criança.
+
+    Nos bons tempos da minha adolescencia,
+    em que eu, moço imprudente, me ufanava
+    de frechar toda a fera que avistasse,
+    commetti uma falta... por acaso.
+    A desgraça presente é fructo acerbo
+    dessa culpa, Kaoçálya, como a morte
+    é fructo de um veneno que se bebe.
+    Mas filha de ignorancia foi a culpa,
+    como a morte talvez de envenenado.
+    Ainda tu não eras minha esposa,
+    e eu era apenas da corôa herdeiro.
+    Nesse tempo, a estação das manhans frescas
+    entornava alegrias na minha alma;
+    o sol, que havia esbraseado a terra
+    e bebido a humidade das campinas,
+    cançado já de procurar o norte,
+    mudara de hemisferio. Graciosas
+    as nuvens espalmavam-se nos ares,
+    e os grous, e os cisnes, e os pavões folgavam
+    repletos de alegria. Os aguaceiros
+    obrigavam os rios a espalharem
+    agua lodosa em cima das alpondras.
+    Os campos, sorridentes sob a chuva,
+    ostentavam seus virides relvados
+    em que as aves, alegres, volitavam.
+
+    No correr de estação tão prasenteira,
+    tomei sobre meus hombros dois carcazes,
+    empunhei o meu arco, e fui-me andando
+    em direcção ás margens do Çarayo.
+    Ao abeirar-me do formoso rio,
+    levava em mira, consoante os habitos,
+    ás feras atirar, que um rumor leve
+    denunciasse, sem que eu mesmo as visse;
+    e escondi-me na sombra, de arco armado,
+    ao pé dos bebedoiros solitarios,
+    que ali dessedentavam, alta noite,
+    os animais que habitam as florestas.
+    E era o caso, que ás vezes despedia
+    alguma frecha para aquella banda
+    donde rumor saíra, e assim matava,
+    um bufalo da selva, um elefante,
+    ou qualquer fera que buscasse as aguas.
+
+    E nessa hora, quando os meus olhares
+    nenhum objecto distinguir podiam,
+    ouvi o som confuso de uma bilha
+    que alguem enchia de agua; som que imita
+    o múrmuro beber de um elefante.
+    E prestes cavilhando no arco a frecha,
+    frecha assás empennada e penetrante,
+    cego pelo destino, despedi-a
+    contra o logar donde o rumor saíra.
+    Mal a frecha voara, uma voz de homem,
+    lamentosa, chegou a meus ouvidos:
+
+    --Morto! estou morto! Como despedir-se
+    um dardo contra mim, contra um ermita?
+    De quem será o braço deshumano
+    que despediu a seta? Vim de noite
+    a bilha encher no solitario rio:
+    quem o assassino? a quem tenho offendido?
+    Oh! esta frecha, tendo penetrado
+    o coração exanime do filho,
+    irá cravar-se no maguado seio
+    de um velho anacoreta, pobre e cego,
+    que aí vegeta á sombra da miseria,
+    no meio destes bosques. Chóro menos
+    o desastrado fim da minha vida,
+    que a sorte de meus pais, dois velhos cegos.
+    Avergados ao peso dos invernos,
+    e por mim amparados tanto tempo,
+    como viverão elles, sós e cegos,
+    sem o amparo do filho? Quem seria
+    o homem sem alma, cuja frecha aguda
+    matou a todos tres, a mim e a elles,
+    que de fructos, raízes e legumes
+    numa paz innocente aqui vivíamos?--
+
+    Disse. E, perante a minha extranha falta,
+    eu, abalado, commovido e trémulo,
+    deixei cair das mãos carcaz e arco.
+    Corri, e achei, postrado na agua, um joven
+    que trajava de pelles de antilobio
+    e usava a illustre djata dos ascetas.
+    Mortalmente ferido, ergueu os olhos,
+    e, cravando-os em mim, num desgraçado,
+    dirigiu-me, rainha, estas palavras,
+    como querendo me abrasar nas chammas
+    da sua radiante santidade:
+
+    --Que offensa contra ti hei commettido,
+    kchatrya, eu, habitante das florestas,
+    para que recebesse a tua frecha,
+    quando no rio eu mergulhava a bilha
+    por que meu pai dessedentasse os labios?
+    Os dois velhos, autores de meus dias,
+    sem um apoio nas desertas matas,
+    aguardam minha volta; pobres cegos!
+    De uma só vez, com uma frecha apenas,
+    tres seres victimaste: eu, a mãi terna,
+    e o pai! Porquê? se nunca te offenderam?
+    A virtude e a sciencia não produzem
+    na terra fructo algum, segundo creio,
+    pois que meu pai não sabe que me matas!
+    E, dado que o soubesse, que faria,
+    elle que nada póde, porque é cego?
+    Assimilha-se a uma árvore sem força.
+    para amparar outra árvore arrancada
+    pela buída secure do lenheiro.
+    Vai, filho de Raghú, vai, sem detença,
+    ter com meu pai, e dá-lhe a fatal nova,
+    antes que a sua maldição te abrase,
+    bem como o fogo abrasa as seccas urzes.
+    O atalho, que tu vês, leva ao retiro
+    onde habita meu pai! fala-lhe, abranda-o,
+    antes que te maldiga em sua colera!
+    Mas... vem, arranca-me do seio a frecha:
+    este dardo, cravado no meu seio,
+    é, como um raio, ardente, e mal respiro.
+    Arranca-me este dardo; que eu não morra
+    com elle no meu peito. Eu não sou brahmane;
+    não te possuas do terror que inspira
+    o assassinio de um brahmane. É verdade
+    que de um brahmane, que erma neste bosque,
+    eu filho sou, mas minha mãi é çudra.--
+
+    Eis o que disse o moço, a minha victima.
+    Á vista deste pobre adolescente,
+    que, entre queixumes tais, se rebolcava
+    nas aguas do Çarayo, despenhei-me
+    na mais extranha prostração de espirito;
+    e, alheado de mim, tirei a frecha
+    do extenuado seio do mancebo,
+    com um cuidado egual ao meu desejo
+    de conservar-lhe a vida. Mas apenas
+    o dardo se extraiu, o moço ermita,
+    exhalando um suspiro entrecortado
+    por golfadas sangrentas, tremeu todo,
+    e extranhamente os olhos revolvendo,
+    exhalou o suspiro derradeiro.
+
+    Quando o filho do santo anacoreta
+    expirou, abatendo a minha gloria,
+    e a mim mesmo, fiquei-me consternado
+    á vista do incuravel infortunio.
+
+    Extraída que foi a seta ardente,
+    fatal como o veneno de uma serpe,
+    tomei a bilha, e dirigi os passos
+    para a mansão da asceta. Os pobres velhos,
+    lá estavam sosinhos, tristes, cegos,
+    sem ninguem que amparasse os desgraçados,
+    como dois passaros que as asas perdem.
+
+    Aguardavam seu filho, e eram sentados,
+    falando delle afflictos, os dois velhos:
+    aquelles que eu ferira em sua prole
+    anciavam a dita que seu filho
+    voltando lhes daria! Neste lance
+    é que eu, na consciencia remordido,
+    achei ermando os pallidos ascetas!
+    O ermita, ouvindo passos junto delle,
+    diz:--Filho meu, porque tardaste tanto?
+    Traze-me a bilha já. Yaginadatta,
+    meu bom amigo, há tanto que te andavas
+    brincando na agua! dava-nos cuidado,
+    á tua boa mãi e a mim, meu filho,
+    tão longa ausencia. Se eu acaso ou ella
+    num momento sequer te magoámos,
+    perdôa, e nunca mais por tanto tempo
+    te detenhas no ponto aonde fores.
+    Não posso andar... tu és as minhas pernas;
+    não posso ver... tu és a minha vista:
+    esta minha existencia em ti descança!
+    Porque não falas tu!--
+
+                           A estas vozes,
+    lentamente abeirando-me do velho,
+    a quem o amor de pai tanto inspirava,
+    e com as mãos o peito comprimindo,
+    disse-lhe suffocado de soluços,
+    e numa voz tremente, balbuciante,
+    mas que a minha firmeza reanimava:
+    --Eu... um kchatrya sou, não sou teu filho;
+    meu nome é Daçaratha; e eis-me comtigo,
+    depois de commetido infando crime,
+    de que a virtude tem horror e espanto.
+    Eu, santo asceta, havia demandado,
+    com o arco em punho, as margens do Çarayo,
+    por espreitar os animais bravios
+    que, da sede obrigados, ali fossem,
+    e que eu frechasse sem os ver. No emtanto,
+    o estridor de uma bilha que se enchia
+    tocou-me o ouvido, despedi a frecha
+    e assassinei teu filho, imaginando
+    matar um elefante. Aos gritos delle,
+    tirados pela frecha que o varara,
+    corri trémulo ao ponto donde vinham,
+    e vi então um joven penitente.
+    É certo que eu pensava, anacoreta,
+    ter em frente de mim um elefante,
+    e atirar a uma fera não a vendo,
+    quando cravou teu filho o férreo dardo.
+    Arranquei-lhe do seio a minha frecha,
+    e elle expirou, subindo ao céu; mas antes
+    havia lastimado longamente
+    a sorte de seus pais. Involuntario
+    foi o assassinio de teu filho amado...
+    Curvado assim ao pêso desta culpa,
+    mereço contra mim a tua colera.--
+
+    Nisto, ficou petrificado o velho;
+    mas logo após, recuperando alento,
+    estas palavras proferiu, emquanto
+    eu as mãos juntas conservava humilde:
+    --Se, criminoso de uma falta enorme,
+    tu m'a não confessasses espontaneo,
+    mesmo sobre teu povo cairia,
+    o castigo tremendo; e o meu anathema
+    havia consumil-o como o fogo!
+    Kchatrya, se soubesses que era ermita
+    aquelle que matavas, esse crime
+    faria despenhar Brahmá do throno,
+    que elle no emtanto occupa inabalavel;
+    a sete descendentes e a outros tantos
+    dos teus maiores cerraria as portas,
+    oh mais vil dos mortais, o paraiso,
+    se consciencia houvesses do teu acto.
+    Foi crime inconsciente; de outra sorte,
+    não viverias já, e a raça inteira
+    dos raghuidas havia de apagar-se,
+    tanto valor se prende á vida tua!
+    Vamos, cruel! conduze-me depressa
+    aonde assassinaste o infeliz moço
+    que era um bordão de cego, e que sabia
+    guiar minha cegueira. Eu quero ainda
+    tocar meu filho morto, se a existencia
+    me não abandonar, antes que o abrace.
+    Quero, com minha esposa, tocar inda
+    o ensanguentado corpo de meu filho,
+    solto o djata e os cabellos em desordem;
+    corpo de que a alma resvalou agora
+    sob o poder de Yamá.--
+
+                           Guiei os cegos,
+    do intimo abalados, a essa estancia
+    e nella os dois esposos abraçaram
+    o estirado cadaver de seu filho.
+    Mal sustendo uma dor que os avergava,
+    ao tocarem apenas no cadaver
+    ergueram da alma doloroso grito,
+    caindo sobre o corpo ensanguentado.
+    O esmaiado semblante de seu filho
+    a mãi beijou, e desatou-se em prantos,
+    e em lamentos tão tristes, que lembravam
+    os da mãi do novilho, a que furtassem
+    a estremecida prole:--Yaginadatta,
+    dizia ella, não me queres tanto
+    como á propria existencia? filho augusto,
+    porque não falas tu, quando te partes
+    para essa viagem que é tão longa?
+    Beija-me e partirás em me abraçando!
+    Já me não queres bem? porque não falas?
+
+    O pai afflicto, débil, alquebrado,
+    falou tambem como se vivo fosse
+    o filho a quem tocava os membros gélidos:
+    --Meu filho, não conheces minhas vozes,
+    nem as de tua mãi? ergue-te agora!
+    vem! em teus braços nos aperta a ambos!
+    De quem ouvirei eu nestes desertos
+    uma voz grata que me leia os _Vêdas_,
+    na noite proxima, co'o mesmo empenho
+    que tinhas em saber os santos dogmas?
+    E quem, meu filho, levará dos bosques
+    á mansão nossa fructos e legumes,
+    sempre que a fome dominar os cegos?
+    E esta ceguinha, carregada de annos,
+    tua mãi, esta boa penitente,
+    como a sustentarei, eu que sou fraco,
+    que sou cego como ella e sem amparo?
+    Não queiras deixar hoje estas paragens;
+    ámanhan, filho, partiremos todos.
+    Depressa a dor obrigará os velhos
+    a deixar esta vida pela morte:
+    a sentença, meu filho, está lavrada.
+    Apenas eu de Yamá entrar nos reinos,
+    infeliz pai, mendigarei eu mesmo;
+    para o filho do Sol levando os passos,
+    eu lhe direi, por ti acompanhado:
+    --dá esmola a meu filho, ó deus dos mortos.--
+    Depois das santas orações da tarde,
+    depois de feita a matutina prece,
+    depois do banho e da oblação piedosa,
+    quem tocará meus pés com as mãos suas,
+    para enlevar-me em sensações tão gratas?
+    Ao mundo dos heróes que não regressam
+    sóbe, meu filho, que és um innocente
+    victimado a imprudencia deshumana.
+    Alcança o eterno mundo dos ascetas,
+    dos sacrificadores e dos brahmanes
+    que as funcções de guru preencheram dignos;
+    o mundo destinado aos penitentes
+    que leram, linha a linha, os santos livros,
+    os _Vêdas_ e os _Vêdangas_; e onde habitam
+    Yasti, Nahusha, e outros reis piedosos;
+    mundo aberto aos bons chefes de familia
+    que nunca o sensual prazer procuram
+    longe dos braços da consorte amada;
+    seres modestos e almas generosas,
+    que a plenas mãos armentos distribuem,
+    e alimentos e terra aos desherdados.
+    Vai, meu filho, acompanho-te em espirito;
+    sóbe ao eterno mundo aonde sóbem
+    aquelles que firmaram entre os povos
+    a paz e a segurança, e cujo verbo
+    foi a voz da verdade. Almas eleitas,
+    que nascem numa casta como a tua,
+    a inferior condição não baixam nunca.
+    Expulso ora d'aqui, vai a esses mundos,
+    onde o mel em regatos serpenteia.--
+
+    Tanto que o solitario estes lamentos,
+    e outros inda, soltou com sua esposa,
+    triste cumpriu a ceremonia da agua
+    em honra de seu filho.
+
+                          Após instantes,
+    de uma celeste fórma revestido,
+    e alçado num suberbo carro aereo,
+    o filho appareceu do santo ermita,
+    e assim falou aos pais:--Em recompensa
+    do puro amor que vos sagrei, obtive
+    condição valiosa: dentro em pouco
+    sereis neste logar tão anhelado.
+    Não lastimeis do vosso filho a sorte,
+    nem crimineis o rei; era destino
+    que eu succumbisse ao tiro do seu arco.--
+
+    Disse; e transfigurado em corpo aereo,
+    erguido, entre esplendores, sobre um carro
+    de uma belleza extrema, sublimou-se
+    o filho do richi ao céu. E emquanto,
+    juntas as mãos, eu era ao pé do ermita,
+    que havia terminado com a esposa
+    a ceremonia da agua em honra ao filho,
+    falou-me assim o santo penitente:
+    --Eu pasmo de que, sendo vil e fátuo,
+    tu contes por avós os ikshwakidas,
+    reis santos, gloriosos e magnanimos.
+    Entre nós jámais houve desavenças,
+    nem pleiteámos campos ou mulheres.
+    Sendo assim, porque a vida tu me roubas
+    e da consorte minha com teu arco?
+    Mas já que és innocente no teu erro,
+    não te maldigo, mas attento escuta:
+    --Assim como chegou para meus dias
+    inesperado termo, pelas máguas
+    que me instillou a perda de meu filho,
+    assim, ao cabo da carreira tua,
+    hás de deixar a vida pesaroso,
+    e chamarás debalde por teu filho.--
+
+    Debaixo deste anathema pesado,
+    voltei para cidade. Dentro em pouco,
+    á sua dor o asceta succumbia,
+    áquella tão violenta dor paterna.
+    A maldição do brahmane por certo
+    se cumpre agora em mim: pois os pezares
+    e as saudades que tenho de meu filho,
+    a seu termo conduzem minha vida.
+    Os meus olhos, rainha, não vêm nada,
+    mesmo as ideias vão-se-me apagando:
+    são estes, dama illustre, os mensageiros
+    da fatal morte, que me apressa a marcha.
+    Se viesse a mim Ramá, ou se eu apenas
+    ouvisse a sua voz, eu rehaveria
+    a minha força, como um moribundo
+    que ambrosia bebesse. Esta saudade,
+    filha da sua ausencia, estala os elos
+    da minha vida, como a onda rasga
+    a ramaria umbrosa que crescera
+    de um rio sobre as margens. Venturosos
+    os que, ao termo do exilio de meu filho,
+    passado nas florestas, Ramá virem
+    voltar para Ayodhya, como Indra
+    descendo lá do céu. Não serão homens
+    mas verdadeiros deuses os que um dia,
+    quando á cidade elle voltar dos ermos,
+    a sua face bella contemplarem,
+    tão resplendente como a lua cheia.
+    Oh venturosos vós, que assim poderdes
+    ver a face a Ramá, a augusta face,
+    similhante á rainha das estrellas,
+    e graciosa e bella, de alvos dentes,
+    e de olhos como as pétalas do lodam.
+    Felizes os mortais, que de meu filho
+    virem a face augusta, cujo halito
+    é egual ao perfume que rescendem
+    as pétalas do lodam, pelo outono.

+Râmâyana,&mdash;a «Morte de Yaginadatta». Priamo aos pés de Achilles, na «Illiada»
+de Homero, é admiravel de dor e de sentimento; arrebata-nos a lastimosa Dido
+nos cantos do cisne mantuano ; Ignez deante de Affonso, no poema de Camões,
+abala-nos a alma e obriga-nos a lagrimas: não teme porem confronto com Priamo,
+Dido e Ignez o cego sublime de Valmiki deante do assassino de seu filho.</p>
+
+<p>Asserções fundadas, mas que podem passar por temerarias, reclamam prova
+efficaz. Não nos esquivamos a ella.....; tomâmo-nos até de ufania com sermos o
+primeiro que apresenta em linguagem nossa um dos eternos monumentos da
+verdadeira poesia indiana.</p>
+
+<p>Não é o luxuriante e o garrido da fórma o que nos prende ao episodio de
+«Yaginadatta»: difficilmente se aprecia a fórma em toda a sua pureza, quando a
+lima dos commentarios e a crueldade, talvez, das traducções, entibiou
+naturalmente o colorido que brotou espontaneo da paleta do artista. Mas aquillo
+que é sempre bello, aquillo que a mão dos seculos não consegue carcomer nem

+  de frechar toda a fera que avistasse,<br>
+  commetti uma falta... por acaso.<br>
+  A desgraça presente é fructo acerbo<br>
+  dessa culpa, Kaoçálya, como a morte<br>
+  é fructo de um veneno que se bebe.<br>
+  Mas filha de ignorancia foi a culpa,<br>
+  como a morte talvez de envenenado.<br>
+  Ainda tu não eras minha esposa,<br>
+  e eu era apenas da corôa herdeiro.<br>
+  Nesse tempo, a estação das manhans frescas<br>
+  entornava alegrias na minha alma;<br>
+  o sol, que havia esbraseado a terra<br>
+  e bebido a humidade das campinas,<br>
+  cançado já de procurar o norte,<br>
+  mudara de hemisferio. Graciosas<br>
+  as nuvens espalmavam-se nos ares,<br>
+  e os grous, e os cisnes, e os pavões folgavam<br>
+  repletos de alegria. Os aguaceiros<span class="pn">{11}</span><br>
+  obrigavam os rios a espalharem<br>
+  agua lodosa em cima das alpondras.<br>

+  e escondi-me na sombra, de arco armado,<br>
+  ao pé dos bebedoiros solitarios,<br>
+  que ali dessedentavam, alta noite,<br>
+  os animais que habitam as florestas.<br>
+  E era o caso, que ás vezes despedia<br>
+  alguma frecha para aquella banda<br>
+  donde rumor saíra, e assim matava,<br>
+  um bufalo da selva, um elefante,<br>
+  ou qualquer fera que buscasse as aguas.<br>

+  E nessa hora, quando os meus olhares<br>
+  nenhum objecto distinguir podiam,<br>
+  ouvi o som confuso de uma bilha<br>
+  que alguem enchia de agua; som que imita<span class="pn">{12}</span><br>
+  o múrmuro beber de um elefante.<br>
+  E prestes cavilhando no arco a frecha,<br>
+  frecha assás empennada e penetrante,<br>
+  cego pelo destino, despedi-a<br>

+  Mal a frecha voara, uma voz de homem,<br>
+  lamentosa, chegou a meus ouvidos:<br>

+  sem um apoio nas desertas matas,<br>

+  O atalho, que tu vês, leva ao retiro<br>
+  onde habita meu pai! fala-lhe, abranda-o,<br>
+  antes que te maldiga em sua colera!<br>
+  Mas... vem, arranca-me do seio a frecha:<br>
+  este dardo, cravado no meu seio,<br>
+  é, como um raio, ardente, e mal respiro.<br>
+  Arranca-me este dardo; que eu não morra<br>
+  com elle no meu peito. Eu não sou brahmane;<br>
+  não te possuas do terror que inspira<br>
+  o assassinio de um brahmane. É verdade<br>
+  que de um brahmane, que erma neste bosque,<br>
+  eu filho sou, mas minha mãi é çudra.&mdash;<br>

+  Eis o que disse o moço, a minha victima.<br>
+  Á vista deste pobre adolescente,<br>
+  que, entre queixumes tais, se rebolcava<br>
+  nas aguas do Çarayo, despenhei-me<br>

+  e, alheado de mim, tirei a frecha<br>
+  do extenuado seio do mancebo,<br>
+  com um cuidado egual ao meu desejo<br>

+  por golfadas sangrentas, tremeu todo,<br>

+  fatal como o veneno de uma serpe,<br>
+  tomei a bilha, e dirigi os passos<br>
+  para a mansão da asceta. Os pobres velhos,<br>
+  lá estavam sosinhos, tristes, cegos,<br>
+  sem ninguem que amparasse os desgraçados,<br>
+  como dois passaros que as asas perdem.<br>

+  Aguardavam seu filho, e eram sentados,<br>
+  falando delle afflictos, os dois velhos:<br>
+  aquelles que eu ferira em sua prole<br>
+  anciavam a dita que seu filho<br>

+  num momento sequer te magoámos,<br>
+  perdôa, e nunca mais por tanto tempo<br>

+  Não posso andar... tu és as minhas pernas;<br>
+  não posso ver... tu és a minha vista:<br>
+  esta minha existencia em ti descança!<br>

+  corri trémulo ao ponto donde vinham,<br>
+  e vi então um joven penitente.<br>
+  É certo que eu pensava, anacoreta,<br>
+  ter em frente de mim um elefante,<br>
+  e atirar a uma fera não a vendo,<br>
+  quando cravou teu filho o férreo dardo.<br>
+  Arranquei-lhe do seio a minha frecha,<br>
+  e elle expirou, subindo ao céu; mas antes<br>
+  havia lastimado longamente<br>
+  a sorte de seus pais. Involuntario<br>
+  foi o assassinio de teu filho amado...<br>
+  Curvado assim ao pêso desta culpa,<br>
+  mereço contra mim a tua colera.&mdash;<br>

+  que a plenas mãos armentos distribuem,<br>

+  Vai, meu filho, acompanho-te em espirito;<br>
+  sóbe ao eterno mundo aonde sóbem<br>
+  aquelles que firmaram entre os povos<br>
+  a paz e a segurança, e cujo verbo<br>
+  foi a voz da verdade. Almas eleitas,<br>
+  que nascem numa casta como a tua,<br>
+  a inferior condição não baixam nunca.<br>
+  Expulso ora d'aqui, vai a esses mundos,<br>
+  onde o mel em regatos serpenteia.&mdash;<br>

+  Tanto que o solitario estes lamentos,<br>
+  e outros inda, soltou com sua esposa,<br>
+  triste cumpriu a ceremonia da agua<br>

+  da minha vida, como a onda rasga<br>
