+Madame Servois et Jeanne cousent assises près de la cheminée. Gertrude
+achève de ranger dans le buffet la vaisselle qui est encore sur la
+table.

+Il n'a pas de veine!

+Mais comment cet accident lui est-il arrivé?... Ce n'était pas la
+première fois qu'il conduisait un attelage.
+

+GERTRUDE
+
+Sûr! Voici plus de dix ans qu'il est charretier chez les Bredel... il a
+l'habitude des chevaux!
+
+
+
+MADAME SERVOIS
+
+Bah! Il suffit d'une fois.
+
+

+GERTRUDE
+
+Et puis... une supposition... peut-être qu'il avait pris un coup de
+trop.
+

+MADAME SERVOIS
+
+Oh, c'est bien possible.
+

+JEANNE
+
+On dit qu'il boit plus souvent qu'à son tour.

+
+Oui, malheureusement.

+Enfin, j'ai promis à sa pauvre femme d'aller lui porter quelques
+provisions.

+Ca mettra du beurre dans leur soupe qui ne doit pas être bien grasse en

+C'est que je n'ai pas toujours été heureuse moi-même... moi aussi, j'ai
+connu la misère... autrefois...

+Oui... Avec lui, j'ai eu bien du malheur.

+Il buvait aussi.

+Et quand il avait bu, il était méchant et brutal... Il criait; il
+cassait tout; il frappait fort!... Il passait tout son temps au
+cabaret.

+Pourtant... au commencement? dans les premiers temps?

+Oh! Ca a toujours été la même chose! Quand nous nous sommes mariés nous
+avions une petite maison, un gentil mobilier, quelques économies; six
+mois après, notre pauvre argent était mangé et nous en étions réduits à
+vendre nos meubles... J'avais à peine dix-neuf ans, toute jeune mariée,
+que déjà il me délaissait...
+

+JEANNE
+
+Oh!

+MADAME SERVOIS, à Jeanne
+
+Tu étais à peine née qu'il fuyait le logis sous prétexte qu'un enfant
+était une charge trop lourde pour lui...
+

+
+Si c'est point honteux!

+MADAME SERVOIS
+
+Quand j'essayai de le retenir auprès de moi, de le raisonner, il
+répondait à mes supplications par des injures, à mes larmes par des
+coups.

+Pauvre mère!
+

+Elle était toute petite, Jeanne, elle ne souvient pas. Moi, je me

+Non... Je suis heureuse à présent.

+Avec monsieur Servois ce n'est pas la même chose.

+Celui-ci, c'est un brave homme!

+Oh, oui! papa est bon!

+Je ne croyais plus guère au bonheur quand je l'ai rencontré... l'autre
+m'avait abandonnée... j'étais toute seule avec ma petite Jeanne...
+découragée!... Quand je pense que je refusais de l'épouser... parce
+qu'il fallait d'abord que je divorce.
+

+GERTRUDE
+
+Eh, bien!
+

+MADAME SERVOIS
+
+Le divorce! Ce mot-là me faisait peur à cause du mariage religieux
+qu'on ne peut pas briser. Et puis, il fallait un tas de formalités! (à
+Jeanne) Je ne savais même pas ce qu'était devenu ton père.
+

+JEANNE, riant
+
+Tu ne le sais même pas encore.
+

+MADAME SERVOIS, geste d'indifférence
+
+Non, mais à présent!... (Elle se lève et plie son ouvrage) Allons,
+Gertrude; c'est fini?
+

+GERTRUDE, qui achève de balayer
+
+Voilà! Ca y est!
+

+MADAME SERVOIS
+
+Je vais m'apprêter (Elle se dirige vers l'appartement de gauche).
+Mettez dans le panier le pain tout entier qui est au bas du buffet.
+

+GERTRUDE
+
+Bien.
+

+MADAME SERVOIS
+
+Il faudra prendre aussi les oeufs et le morceau de lard que j'ai
+préparés.

+
+Sûrement qu'elle en a vu de toutes les couleurs, votre pauvre mère!

+Une fière chandelle qu'elle doit au Bon Dieu d'avoir mis monsieur
+Servois sur sa route... un brave coeur celui-là!... et qui vous aime
+comme si vous étiez sa fille.

+Mais moi-même, je le considère comme mon père... C'est lui qui m'a
+élevée, aimée, protégée... l'autre ne compte pas pour moi.

+Pas même cherché à savoir ce que sa femme et son enfant étaient
+devenus. Quel homme!

+Heu... ces gas-là! (un temps) Vous n'avez jamais souhaité le revoir,

+Lui? oh!... Il me fait peur! C'est comme de l'aversion que je
+ressens... Nous sommes si heureux ainsi!... D'abord, c'est fini, il
+n'est plus rien: maman s'est remariée...

+Oui, mais c'est quand même votre père; il a des droits sur vous... s'il
+voulait vous emmener avec lui.

+MADAME SERVOIS, tendant un paquet à Gertrude

+Maman, pense donc à me rapporter de la laine.
+

+MADAME SERVOIS
+
+Pour ton tricot? Bien!... Tu n'as pas besoin d'autre chose?
+

+JEANNE
+
+Non, c'est tout. Je vais coudre en vous attendant.
+

+MADAME SERVOIS
+
+C'est ça. (Elle va vers la porte de la route et s'arrête brusquement. A
+Jeanne) Ah, dis donc. Si le cordonnier apportait les bottes de ton
+père, paye-le... J'ai mis vingt-cinq francs sur le buffet.
+

+JEANNE, va au buffet et regarde l'argent
+
+Oui, les voilà... Entendu, maman.
+

+MADAME SERVOIS
+
+Eh bien, à tout à l'heure.
+
+
+
+Elle sort suivie de Gertrude qui porte le panier.

+SCENE IV

+JEANNE, puis MORAND, le Garde-Chasse
+
+
+
+Jeanne coud en chantonnant quand la porte s'ouvre et Morand apparaît
+fusil en bandoulière.
+

+MORAND, entrant
+
+Bonjour, mademoiselle Jeanne.
+
+
+
+JEANNE, se retournant
+
+Tiens! Bonjour, monsieur Morand!
+
+
+
+MORAND
+
+Je n'ai pas voulu passer devant votre porte sans entrer.
+
+
+
+JEANNE, réservée
+
+C'est gentil cela... Qu'est-ce qui vous amène de notre côté.
+
+
+
+MORAND
+
+Mon métier... mon métier de garde-chasse (Avec éclat) Il y a un fichu
+vagabond qui rôde aux alentours depuis ce matin.
+

+JEANNE
+
+Est-ce qu'il a fait du mal?
+

+MORAND, bourru
+
+Comme toujours!
+

+JEANNE
+
+Il a braconné sur vos terres?
+
+
+
+MORAND
+
+Si ce n'était que çà: il m'a détruit deux nids de faisans... histoire
+de dévaster... pour s'amuser! Ces êtres-là ont une rage bête contre la
+propriété des autres!... Sans compter qu'il a failli mettre le feu à un
+tas de fagots sur la lisière du bois.

+JEANNE
+
+Comment?
+
+

+MORAND
+
+Il aura voulu cuire le produit de quelque larcin et il est parti sans
+éteindre le feu qu'il avait allumé à deux pas d'une meule de bois. Si
+on ne me l'avait pas signalé et si je n'y étais pas allé aussitôt, ça y
+était! D'un temps pareil, tout aurait flambé comme des allumettes.
+

+JEANNE
+
+C'est imprudent, en effet.
+
+

+MORAND
+
+On devrait les coffrer tous ces gas-là... Ah, ils en donnent du fil à
+retordre! Aussi, si je le pince, il n'y coupe pas.
+

+JEANNE
+
+Ne soyez pas trop sévère, monsieur Morand.
+
+
+
+MORAND
+
+Ah! Ca ne sera que de la bonne justice. De la pitié avec ces gueux-là,
+c'est de la misère qu'on se réserve.
+

+Mais s'il n'est coupable que d'une imprudence avec le feu?... Ce n'est
+pas un crime, cela!
+

+MORAND
+
+Et mes deux nids de faisans!
+

+JEANNE
+
+Vous êtes certain que c'est lui qui les a détruits.
+

+MORAND
+
+Qui voulez-vous que ce soit? Je suis bien sûr de ne pas me tromper en
+l'accusant!... Et puis, si ce n'est pas lui, il paiera en une fois pour
+tous les tours qu'il a joués et dont il n'a pas rendu compte. Allez,
+mademoiselle Jeanne, ces rôdeurs-là ne sont guère dignes de pitié et il
+ne faut pas vous émouvoir pour eux.

+JEANNE
+
+Peut-être avez-vous raison... moi, pourtant, de crainte d'accuser
+injustement un innocent, j'aimerais mieux laisser en liberté dix
+coupables.
+
+

+MORAND
+
+Parce que vous êtes bonne et puis vous êtes une femme. Les femmes ça a
+tout de suite la larme à l'oeil! Avec ces vauriens-là, faut des
+hommes... Et des hommes solides comme moi! Pas d'indulgence, ni de
+sentiment: de la poigne, voilà!... Mais, je cause... je bavarde sans
+seulement vous demander des nouvelles de vos parents.

+
+Je vous remercie, ils vont bien: papa est parti au marché dès ce matin.
+

+MORAND
+
+Et madame Servois? Elle n'est pas là, donc, que je ne la vois pas?

+Elle est sortie avec Gertrude. Elles sont parties chez la mère Mathurin
+et ne seront pas longtemps absentes.

+vous.. dans votre intérêt, il vaut mieux ne pas le contrarier.

+
+Vous avez raison. Je pars... Donnez-moi seulement un petit mot
+d'espoir. Jeanne, voulez-vous?... C'est si dur de m'en aller comme ça.

+Non! Je ne puis rien ajouter à ce que je vous ai dit... Mes parents
+vous donneront ma réponse plus tard.

+MORAND, tristement

+Et c'est tout?

+(Morand remet silencieusement son fusil sur l'épaule, puis il ouvre la
+porte du fond et inspecte les environs).

+MORAND, se retournant vers Jeanne après avoir refermé la porte
+
+Je vais me remettre à la poursuite de mon homme... Si vous le
+permettez, je passe par le jardin, je vais faire le tour par les
+champs.
+
+

+JEANNE
+
+Faites... Au revoir, monsieur Morand.
+
+
+
+MORAND
+
+Au revoir, mademoiselle Jeanne. A bientôt, vous savez...
+
+
+
+(Il sort par la porte de droite. Jeanne s'accoude sur la table
+pensivement).
+

+SCENE V
+
+
+
+JEANNE, puis un VAGABOND
+
+
+
+JEANNE, réfléchissant
+
+
+
+Etre la femme de monsieur Morand! Je n'y aurais jamais songé... (Un
+temps, elle hoche la tête) Non, non!... Il doit être dur, brutal... Il
+a la voix rude... le geste brusque... Ce ne doit [pas] être un homme
+bien commode... Non!... je dirai à maman de refuser. (Un temps) Et
+puis, le fils Baron... lui aussi veut m'épouser... et il me plaît
+beaucoup plus.
+
+
+
+(Elle reprend son ouvrage. Bientôt la porte du fond s'ouvre et un
+vagabond apparaît. Elle a peur, veut crier, mais l'homme la rassure).
+
+
+
+JEANNE, toute saisie
+
+Ah!... cet homme!...
+
+
+
+LE VAGABOND
+
+Non, non! n'appelez pas... n'ayez pas peur... J'ai soif! Un verre d'eau
+seulement, s'il vous plaît? Il fait si chaud!
+
+
+
+(Jeanne se lève craintivement, va au buffet et prend une cruche et un
+verre. Elle pose le tout sur la table).
+
+
+
+JEANNE
+
+Voilà... Buvez! (Elle verse un verre de cidre).
+
+
+
+LE VAGABOND (voix traînante et sourde qu'il gardera jusqu'à la fin)
+
+Merci. (Jeanne recule jusqu'à sa place) Le soleil tape sur la route et
+il n'y a pas d'eau dans la campagne... votre maison est la première que
+je rencontre. Je suis entré. D'un temps pareil on ne refuserait pas un
+verre d'eau, même à un chien.
+
+
+
+JEANNE
+
+Buvez.
+
+
+
+(Elle reprend son ouvrage sans perdre l'homme de vue).
+
+

+LE VAGABOND
+
+Oui... tout de suite.
+
+

+(Il tire un tabouret de dessous la table et s'asseoit).
+

+Oh!... Est-ce qu'il va rester?
+

+LE VAGABOND

+Ca semble bon de se reposer à l'ombre.

+(Il examine autour de lui).

+Comme il regarde!... Ah!! Il a dû voir l'argent sur le buffet... J'ai

+
